🎙️Episode 188 of the Self Made Podcast: Diet & Exercise alone is not enough for health with Bryan Walsh is now live! I’ve been following the work of Dr Bryan Walsh my entire career. In fact I don’t think there is a bigger expert on functional nutrition, physiology and blood work around. So I knew this episode would be special but I wasn’t prepared for quite how impactful it would be. The concept of health can be overwhelming even for us coaches with people fighting over calories vs hormones, toxins and seed oils this episode dives into the lot. How does our health really work and why we need to start looking at how our cells function. But while much of this comes down to our activity and our nutrition there is one part we rarely talk about and that’s community and lifestyle. We are in a loneliness epidemic effecting not only our mental health but also our physical health. It was amazing to hear Bryan talk about the role his faith has played in his life and discuss why people of faith tend to be healthier and happier. This conversation goes to many levels and in my mind a must listen if you’re a fan of the show. 🎙️Episode 184 of the Self Made Podcast: Should you blindly trust the science! With Acos Ashioti is now live! The term evidence based has become one of the most overused terms in the industry. Is science really that easy to read and interpret?I can honestly tell you know with research being filled with complex terms, methods to dive into, P values and many other factors that may take a study you are so confident in and make it defunct. But this is what this episode with Acos is designed for. To help you understand what the science is really telling you. From understanding the lingo, how to break down a paper, where is the line between evidence based and practical experience and more!We also dive into some of the most debated topics from low carb to meal timing and find the middle ground of what’s true and what is worth pursuing with your clients. What does it truly take to become an authority in the fitness industry? It is a complex question with manny possible answers and that is exactly what myself and this week's guest Jordan Shallow discuss in this conversation. The industry seems to be leaning into the quick fix territory now more than ever with the race to 10k months, the tribalistic nature of reaction videos often coming before the graft and exploration it takes to become an outstanding coach at the top of their game.In this show I dive into the what lead Jordan to where he is now. The bit you do not always see on instagram and what he feels it takes to be an outstanding coach. We discusses the fear of judgment and the reluctance to make mistakes in the digital age. The role of community, communication, environment and becoming a master of your craft. But one thing Jordan lives by and a piece of advice he gave me many years ago that is more true to me today than ever. To be a great coach it comes with being a better human! Whether that is personally, professionally or in the experiences we dive into head first. He also has commited to be my first tag team partner and enforcer when I become a pro wrestler (holding you to that Jordan!)Chapters00:00Introduction and Reflection on Previous Episode01:17Becoming an Authority in the Fitness Industry03:05The Difference Between Bodybuilding and Sports Performance07:30The Importance of Communication and Teamwork in Coaching10:11Balancing Outcome and Enjoyment in Training16:05Embracing Failure and Seeking New Environments for Growth33:15Embracing Error and Environment36:05Fear of Judgment in the Digital Age41:19Reward Systems and Reactions44:39Optimization and Community53:36Mind Your Business01:10:36The Importance of Effective Communication in Coaching01:31:04Refining Communication Skills01:35:28Gaining Perspective through Travel and Personal Growth01:38:16Being the Best Coach by Being the Best Version of YourselfSupport the showGet in touch by heading to...Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/kingsleyduttonYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCCUTkN8Dcin4LSHBt0-Q46QEmail: https: Simon@madecoaching.comWebsite: www.selfmadeuniversity.co.uk

In this episode we welcome Lewis Potts to the show.Lewis aims to make coaching great again by encouraging coaches to implement more true coaching and communication into their services. Client adherence is the biggest roadblock that I hear coaches have. they have a good knowledge of training and nutrition but this is useless if the client cannot stick to the plan. This is why this is something both myself and Lewis focus on heavily within our programs. In this episode we discuss the importance of asking good questions and helping clients come to their own solutions. Why expectation management is the most important skill a coach should develop and why if you do not have boundaries as a coach you will not be helping anyone. We also dive into the rise of concern for emotional eating and if it is something we really should worry too much about as exercise professionals as well as nature vs nurture in physique change. The episode in full is live now on Youtube, Apple, Spotify and wherever you listen to your podcasts.Support the show:If you would like to support the show (thank you in advance) follow the link in my bio to our Buy Me a Coffee site remember the bigger the show gets the bigger the guests get!To get in touch with Lewis….Instagram: @lewispottsofficialLink to the obesity map we talk about in the show:https://foresightprojects.blog.gov.uk/2017/10/04/dusting-off-foresights-obesity-report/To listen to the full show Audio: The Self Made Podcast or click the link in my bio Youtube: Simon Kingsley DuttonChapters00:00Introduction and Safe Word00:19Lewis Potts' Goal: Making Coaching Great Again02:41Coaches' Knowledge and the Importance of Coaching04:14The Challenge of Standing Out in a Saturated Market05:38Finding the Balance Between Coaching and Empathy06:23Defining Coaching and Compassion09:14The Importance of Holding Clients Accountable10:13The Fear of Pissing Off Clients vs. Getting Results13:46The Power of Data-Driven Conversations15:13Asking Better Questions and Active Listening20:28Developing the Coach-Client Relationship23:47The Importance of Phone or Zoom Conversations25:21Using What and How Questions to Guide Clients33:45Tailoring Coaching Methods45:03Importance of Personalized Feedback57:23Balancing Automation and Personal Connection01:03:14Building Rapport for Effective Coaching01:05:08Setting Boundaries for Focus and Emotional Well-being01:06:15The Role of Automation in Coaching01:07:46Empowering Clients to Make Decisions01:08:32Effective Communication and Realistic Expectations01:09:54The Impact of Restrictive Dieting on Relationships with Food01:12:16Finding the Balance Between Optimal and Achievable Goals01:36:03The Importance of Coaching and Misconceptions01:37:03Understanding and Addressing Complex Factors01:38:29Differentiating Disordered Eating and Eating Disorders01:41:20The Role of Genetics, Environment, and Socioeconomic Status in Obesity01:56:55Building a Supportive Community of Coaches02:06:26Conclusion and Future PlansSupport the showGet in touch by heading to...Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/kingsleyduttonYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCCUTkN8Dcin4LSHBt0-Q46QEmail: https: Simon@madecoaching.comWebsite: www.selfmadeuniversity.co.uk

🎙️Episode 181 of the Self Made Podcast: Is the carnivore diet healthy? With Steven Collins! We have become so tribal in this industry it seems harder and harder to get an objective and balanced view on any topic. Maybe it is because the middle ground and nuance (sorry Pat Davidson I know you hate that word) does not get clicks and shares but I care less about that and more about empowering coaches with when and how to utilise the tools in their toolbox and people who want to lose weight or gain muscle a balanced view to make their own decisions. This is why this episode exists! I am not a pro carnivore dieter, I am also not an anti carnivore dieter. Is it a long term diet approach for most people? Probably not!!Is it the best diet for performance and hypertrophy? Likely no.Can it impact make sticking to a deficit easier for some? absolutely!Does it simplify smart choices? Sure canCan it positively impact satiety? YesCan it be of benefit to some people with autoimmune issues or intolerances to fodmap foods, nightshades or various pesticides? It can be a great starting point. You see many of us get locked into the thought process of what is “best” when for most of us our lifestyle changes, our priorities change, our taste changes and our health changes. A diet can be a great start point does not need to be perfect on day 1. Maybe it is an easy set of rules to follow and takes away symptoms or issues effecting ourself while we work on some of the lifestyle stuff to add more variety in down the line. This episode breaks down all these talking points and more. When and why you would use an elimination style diet, what you do during this to rebuild variety and flexibility and who we think a animal based approach is not for.The episode in full is live now on Youtube, Apple, Spotify and wherever you listen to your podcasts.Timestamps:00:00The Tribalism and Confidence of Vegans vs. Carnivores02:39The Potential Nutrient Deficiencies in Carnivore and Vegan Diets06:14The Benefits and Challenges of Elimination Diets09:19The Impact of Toxins on Our Health12:10The Nutrients Lacking in a Vegan Diet23:39Exploring the Carnivore Diet28:08Sustainability and Adherence to Diet31:22Macronutrients and Nutrient Sources38:09Tracking Data and Optimizing Health45:37Strategies for Sustainable DietingSupport the show:If you would like to support the show (thank you in advance) follow the link in my bio to our Buy Me a Coffee site remember the bigger the show gets the bigger the guests get!To get in touch with Ste….Instagram: @stevencollinstrainingTo listen to the full show Audio: The Self Made Podcast or click the link in my bio Youtube: Simon Kingsley DuttonSupport the showGet in touch by heading to...Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/kingsleyduttonYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCCUTkN8Dcin4LSHBt0-Q46QEmail: https: Simon@madecoaching.comWebsite: www.selfmadeuniversity.co.uk

🎙️Episode 180 of the Self Made Podcast: Is therapy worth it? With Robb! You never really know what life is going to throw at you. I have learned this the hard way this year when everything I thought was certain, many of the things I held dear and the person I cared about more than anything else in this world disappeared literally in an instant. I was left trying to pick up the pieces of my life with no clarity, confusion, disappointment all while experiencing what I can only describe as grief for the life I wanted but could no longer have. What made this extra hard as this brought up many of the mental roadblocks that have followed me throughout most of my life. Feelings of not being enough!Feelings of people leaving or not fighting to keep me in their life. These are all things I have dealt with in therapy a few years back and immediately realised I needed to delve into again this year. While no one myself included could have predicted how this year would turn out I know that without therapy in my life it could have sunk me a lot lower.Someone else who knows a lot about the process of therapy is my co-host Robb and this is what we come together to discuss in today’s episode. This episode is personal and very raw Robb coming at this from looking back and me right in the middle of looking into the eye of the storm. We touch on the stigma around therapy if it is warranted and if it differs between men and woman and why we think this may be. We discuss how therapy is a long game and not a quick fix and how the real benefits could be seen months if not years after we sit down for the session. We talk battles with addictions, breaking negative behaviours self awareness, how to reach out and what to do if a mate or family members of yours is struggling. Why saying you are there may not be enough and what we wanted in our darkest moments. But I are also aware some of you listening to this may also be struggling! I can truly truly sympathise and this is why we talk what we have learned about finding the right therapist and if you feel you need to reach out to either myself or Robb our instagrams are below and we will 100% listen because together we can get through most things alone the hill becomes steep.
