A McDonald's in McDonaldland gets a McDonaldland meal in McDonaldland. I am unashamed. What about you?
B
Welcome back to Unashamed. I've found out, Jason, the last, I guess four days, maybe five since I got back from Ireland, that I, I am not my father's son when it comes to phone. I can't live without a phone anymore. Like, I could live without it, but I can't do without it if I'm traveling, trying to communicate with.
C
I could help you with that.
B
Well, because here's what happens. So I'm in Ireland, and first, the phone's working fine. Usually when you go overseas, we have some kind of plan. It just kicks into whatever the plan is, and then I can use my phone while I'm anywhere. Well, it never happened. This time, my phone surrendered to the country of Ireland. It just said, nope, I'm out. So I should have just.
C
You should have just buried.
B
Well, at first I was happy because I was like, oh, man, I felt so free, you know, like five days without a phone. But the problem is I'm driving all over the thing. You need a phone, distance, gps. I mean, you got to go old fashioned, though. How did people find a map anymore?
C
You find a person?
B
No, but they, you know, they, they. Yeah, I can barely understand them. They were.
C
Now, look, I, I. When the, when we discussed our trips a couple podcasts ago, I was in so much pain from my rock. Why does it make me laugh on the stream? You say it because, look, I mean.
B
I don't, I'm not rejoicing your calamity. I just. Every time you say it, I imagine now you are.
A
You're rejoicing.
B
Well, I guess I am.
C
We don't feel, dad.
B
And so far you think.
C
Yeah, well, I actually, I was gonna say this the other day during the podcast, but I didn't want to do it. But it's like, it made me think of that Forrest Gump movie when he got shot in the rear. In the buttocks. Yeah, in the butt. And it was like, funny.
B
Yeah.
C
But I learned something. For those five days, any part of your body that is injured severely, it affects everything. It's excruciating. Yeah.
B
Yeah.
C
And so you think about, what did I do? I literally was in a plane all day. Sitting in a very uncomfortable chair with.
B
Air travel would be the worst thing with the back or buttock issue.
C
And I'm not embellishing. By the end, the plane got delayed. And so by the time I got to that airport, Al, at 12:30 and, well, every on my team, they're all in bed.
B
Yep.
C
And I had to go to a hotel.
B
Oh, boy. You're solo. You're right.
C
Well, I'm solo. There's no one with me. You need to. Midnight. Well, my assistant said, follow the signs. I never saw a sign that said anything about this airport. And I thought, what sign is she talking about? So I did what you're talking about. I Googled it or whatever.
B
Yeah, you did the map.
C
And, well, the problem was it just wasn't. I wasn't getting a signal wherever I. So it would come in, and I knew I was close, and so I found myself outside the airport. Now, look, in Philadelphia, and I've already told you, I had a lovely experience. But after midnight and you're walking around out in the parking lot of the airport, everybody I saw I would deem as shady.
B
And the thing about it, Jase, is some person is telling a story on their podcast and said the same thing about you.
C
Yeah, well, I fit right in. So, you know, there was an old lady sitting on. On a corner, just sitting on a bench, and it was about 12:30, and I was like, I'm going to take my. My chance here, because I was in your situation, but my phone won't work. And I said, don't want to alarm you, but I'm looking for a Marriott out here in this parking lot. And she said, I've stayed in that Marriott. She said, I've heard of that. I thought, that's interesting that she's heard of it. I said, what direction? If you had to point in a direction from right here. This is old school. I said, where would you point? So she put her finger up and she kind of scanned like she was a Ouija board. And she was like, I'd go with that. So I just took off in that direction, me and my bag. And sure enough, I come up to the back of a building, and I saw on the glass door entrance, Mary. And I thought, well, I got it. Of course, I walked up that door. It was locked. So I walked around. But sure enough, she was right. And that's how I found my place. But what I'm saying is, you got to have a sense of feeling. You can't be controlled by this phone.
B
No, you're right, because here's the era we live in, which is a blessing in Some ways. So I can't figure it out. I can only text if I have WI Fi. The phone will not work. So I'm trying to work on podcasts with y'. All. I'm trying to send out messages. It's miserable. I'm driving home. I don't have any way to talk to anybody. And then my granddaughter last night takes another phone that's a newer version, that Anna is one of the leftovers or something, I don't even know. And somehow, in my mind, like magic, like a leprechaun, she transferred everything from my old phone into this phone in about an hour. Yeah, it was incredible.
C
Well, that's the real one.
B
I watched it. It was like. I was watching it happen. I mean, she's 17, but they know stuff. I was like, how would she even. I was like, your mom, Zach. It was like I was watching something out of a fairy tale. And then all of a sudden, my life is better because today I could text y'. All.
A
As somebody who understands a little bit about technology, I'm like, yeah, it's not that complicated. I mean, literally, you put the phone next to phone, and it. You push a button, and it just. It's not.
B
I know. It's like, man, I'm like. The first time dad, it's like, what?
A
You've discovered something that has actually been going on for about the last 15 years. You're like, wow, this new technology, it.
B
Reminds me of dad standing there watching the fax machine the first time it worked. And he said, how.
C
How does it.
B
He said, you feed a piece of paper. It that somewhere else.
A
We're so. No, we're so far beyond that right now. I. I listen to a podcast last night with my kids on the threat, the looming threat of AI, and you think about how far advanced we are. Like, what's what? Like, what is. Like, we're on the press. Because I use a lot of AI stuff already, and it is crazy where we're headed. I mean, I think you're going to look around about two years, and I think we're all going to be like, whoa, what just happened?
C
Well, that's my whole point. I'm going to go with Divine Intelligence. I'm going with Di Divine.
B
Yeah. I'm going to write that down.
C
Well, because here's why. At the end of the day, when you look at Jesus, let's just. I've made this list before.
B
If we still had a shirt.
C
No home, Al. No home. They. He said, hey, you want to follow me? I don't even have a place to lay my head. He had. Had no phone. They didn't even. This is back in. He never traveled over 100 miles, I believe. Yeah.
B
I mean, you just look at the country.
C
He actually didn't write a book. I get it. He is the word.
B
Yeah, he is the word.
C
But he didn't go on a book tour. There was no media, there was no microphones. He had no.
B
His entourage was really kind of a lost group.
C
Pretty tough entourage as far as trying to be the smartest guy in the room. And he's the most. I mean, how would you describe the result of that? He is, I would say, the most known human ever to walk the planet, whether you believe in him or not.
B
That's right.
C
So I'm saying there's something to that. I mean, look, we have.
B
Think about Europe. That's a great point. You're a person that everybody at some point makes a decision to accept or reject.
C
Yeah.
B
I mean, everybody.
C
Yeah. Whatever you view, you. Your view of Jesus, that is going to reflect your entire life.
B
That's right. Your philosophy on life. There's only one of those. Like that.
C
Well, I noticed a few days ago, I was studying, because we're in John, and you have the famous seven I AM statements. But someone I was reading. I'm sorry, I wasn't planning on divulging this, but he had like seven I AM statements that were just. That Jesus used in conversation.
B
Because there's a bunch more than just the big. The ones we can.
C
Oh, yeah, I looked them up. There were three in John 8 where he says, I am who I am. Or, you know, something like that. But another one was the story where the storm came up. And he doesn't say I am, but he made a point. And I got to thinking about it, I thought, that's a profound point. Now they're in a boat, storm comes up. You remember when he's walking on the water and he says, it is I. Well, just think about that statement. It's a statement I've never used in my life. It is I about anything. But he was. Under the circumstance. There's a storm and here's a human walking on the water. And they're like. And he's like, it is I. It is I. Which is the equivalent of I am. This is I. It is I. And so that's why I always find it fascinating when John, who wrote John, obviously, and he starts off in the beginning, was the word. When he gets to First John, he's like that. Which we Saw from the beginning. It's like he changed the adjective to describe it was so incredible. He's like, we saw it. We saw this.
B
Yeah.
C
He was having trouble personalizing it just because of everything that had happened.
A
So the. The Chef IQ flash sale just got a little bit flashier. Guys, y', all, y'.
C
All.
A
Is everybody using the Chef IQ since.
C
Yeah, I would call that a game changer.
B
It's been so good. As you noticed when you came to my house last time, Zach. I have a drawer full of ones that won't work anymore. And then I've got my little pack of Chef IQ that every time.
A
I would never go back to a different meat thermometer. These wireless thermometers are absolutely incredible. You could still get the flash cell pricing on Chef IQ Sense, which is the thermometers. And the new flashier cell is on as well on the brand new Chef IQ mini oven. I've got one of these. It's actually on here in the office. I've got it right behind me. This thing is incredible. This is a next generation smart convection oven that you can put right on your countertop. And I'm telling you, this will be any old air fryer that you have out there. It can cook everything. I can fry awesome chicken, but it's way healthier. I can put a. I can bake a pizza in there that tastes like it came right out of a pizza oven. It grills meat like your outdoor grill. It bakes bread like a bread maker. You can even make perfect bacon, eggs, toast, muffins. I mean, this thing does it all. And best of all, your IQ mini oven connects to your smartphone app. I love having all this stuff, by the way, on my phone. It helps me keep track when I'm cooking because I love to cook. Your phone tells you when it's done, and it can. You can even pair it with your chef iq. Since thermomet, which I have done, these things are absolutely incredible. And also the. This makes a perfect gift for somebody as well. My son Max tried to take it back to college with him. Not going to happen. But I might buy him one. And during their flash sale, you'll save a boatload. Visit chefiq.com and use promo code unashamed. Again, that's chefiq.com promo code unashamed.
B
So we did another flip on that yesterday. I was meeting with some guys about some preaching stuff coming up at our church, and one of the suggestions they made. We did a drama years ago, and it was called he is and Gary Myers used to be our old worship leader back in the day. He had a song called He Is. It's very, very powerful. And I thought, well, that's just another I am. Because then they started running through all the he is statements, you know, in the Gospels, in the New Testament. I thought, well, that's just another version of I am, he is. Then you say, he is this, he that, you know, he is in.
C
Well, there's actually one in John 13 where he says, think where I am going. Yeah, It's a subtle when, when he says, In 33, my children, I'll be with you only a little longer, you look for me. And just as I told the Jews. So I tell you now where I am going. Right. Well, you think, well, he just may be saying I'm going there. But I think he used it on purpose because then he says it again in 36, where I am going. I mean, he constantly puts that in the verses subtly, which I think is awesome. So you told that story. I had no idea you were going to tell the cell phone that we're dinosaurs. And I realized Zach's got to keep up, you know, because he's usually the smartest guy in the room, but when.
B
It comes to technology, he's the one that connects us to business and all that.
C
Right? Yeah. I mean, I'm just telling you, Zach.
A
That'S, I'll take that.
C
That's a road that at one point you're going to look up and realize you're behind because these young people, they just.
A
I'm already behind.
C
Well, here's why. Because they're, you know, if you work out any part of your body, you see the results. Yeah, well, these, the young people now that are younger than 25, their thumbs are like the strongest part of their.
B
Body and they have an extra ligament or something that they're seeing. I read this recently. There's some kind of. Now a, I hate to call it a mutation, but it's something in their thumbs that is adding their more flexibility to the ability to do that. To your point.
C
Yeah. One day when we get to the.
A
You know, my 19, my 20 year old producer over here is laughing as he's hearing y' all say this.
B
Well, what's interesting, I'm sure, Matt, is.
C
Tell your 20 year old produce that. Let's just say the Lord does not come back, you know, physically in the next couple hundred years. Somebody's going to dig up the graves of one of these young people now. And they're like, see, it's Evolution. Look at the thumbs.
B
They got an extra size.
A
How are your thumbs? Let me see your thumbs.
C
Oh, those are massive.
A
They look like Arnold Schwarzenegger thumbs. I mean, these guys are.
C
Well, when I'm texting my daughter, I'm like, did she have that message ready for me? It's a paragraph in less than five seconds that came my way. And I'm over here doing one letter at a time thinking, how did you do that so fast?
A
Well, there's a big, there's a big debate online on Twitter right now about a theological topic called penal substitutionary atonement. Which, not that, not to get too.
C
Deep into it, but someone asked me use these phrases. And look, when every time you do that, it short circuits my brain.
A
Well, that's not the point.
C
I've never read that phrase in the Bible. And I've read.
B
Say it again so I can write it down.
C
Write it down.
A
Penal substitutionary atonement.
B
Okay.
C
Is that a good thing or a bad thing or what is that?
A
Well, it's a biblical doctrine that there's a new book came out that's.
C
Can I give a caveat again? Always, always look at a red flag when you take something in the Bible and then turn it into a category, then take another category that we comprise and then start arguing the categories.
A
My point is this, My point is this, is that I get a text from a college age kid. What are your thoughts on penal substitutionary atonement? On text? And I'm like, like, it's like those kind of questions, these kids, but they can type so fast. They can have a pretty robust dialogue on a, on a important or complex topic like that. And I don't, I just get, if I get a question like that on text, I get them all the time or email even. I just get particularly text because you're only doing it with your thumbs. I just get like paralyzed because I'm like, where, where, how do I like just, and I'll just, I usually respond, call me.
C
Yeah.
A
I'm like, I'm not going to get, I'm not going to give.
C
I could break it down. Okay. Jesus, there was a washing of our sins. He. He took our place, what we deserve.
B
You could break each word down.
C
There's a penalty to sin, right? Well, why don't you just say that he became himself. I don't like, I don't like categories. I mean, there's a verse in the Bible that I, that I'm, that I like, that says don't add anything to or take you Know it is what it is.
A
Let's read it. I don't think. I mean, that's not what that verse means, but I don't know what you're saying.
C
I mean, I was sort of kidding, but not really. But I want to tell this story because Al brought up this phone. I know we want to get to John 13, but. So my wife. I never shared this. You know, I recently had an anniversary.
B
Oh, that's right.
C
Congratulations, y', all, Because I know y' all are not sitting around.
B
I was actually aware of it, Jace, because Lisa said the day before, she said, is tomorrow Jason misses Anniversary. I said, what day? I lost track of days because we were on our trip and. And she said, yeah, August 10th.
C
It's a big number. 35 years.
B
Yeah, that's right.
C
So I. I got her. We were traveling all over the country. We basically. I don't even know if we were together on our anniversary. Yeah, yeah, we were. That was the one day we were. And so, you know, fortunately, I followed the rule. I got her something. I looked around and thought, I guess we're just out of state after 35 years. Don't be alarmed if you're the only one handing out presents. And look, I guess she knows I don't really care about that, you know, but her idea was. And this is quite the idea, I guess this was my present. It took me three days to figure that out. But she was like, look, I think what we should do tonight is, you know, I have a relationship with a young couple who lives in the same house, our first house that we lived in. And she gave me the numbers from 1991 in 1997. And it was a. Well, how can you forget this place? It was. It was right on a corner where about three roads all intersect. That's correct. And they actually had to move before we bought the place. They had to move the driveway for.
B
The little house because we would just drive right there.
C
Yeah. And look, we got this house. It was a HUD house, which means you're poor. That's all you need to know. No money down. And our payment a month, because we had no money to put down, our payment turns at the time was $325 a month. That's what.
B
That seemed like a lot back then, didn't it?
C
Well, yeah, but. So they had to move the driveway to the other side because people kept running the stop sign and crashing into their cars parked in the driveway. So they had just redone this, which was like the big move here. And so we that because it was lower, because it was the driveway. So that was called the pit because it was just. You stepped down into the pit, which used to be the driveway. But anyway, so she said, well, we.
B
Did a lot of ministry in that house.
C
Oh, my goodness.
B
I mean, that was early days.
C
So that was the thought. She's like, they're fixing to sell it. She said, I reached out to them four years ago because the husband is a worship minister. And she's like, they just reminded me of us. And we met them at. Because we. We go to different. Various local churches. I think I've been to every one in Western at some point. And so. But. But I wasn't putting the faces. She just said, a young couple, he's a worship minister. And she's like, they're fixed to sell the house. And they've been there for about the time we were. And she said, I think it would be good. She invited us to come and see it before they move out. So I was like, okay. I mean, I was a little bit. I thought, this is kind of weird.
B
You weren't quite as. You weren't quite as excited as she was about the prospect.
C
I thought that's why it took me three days to realize this was the present. So we.
B
I would be like, great, but it's something else I have to do.
C
So we pull up now. You gotta remember, even though I'm still living this town and I drive by it all the time, and I noticed they fixed it up some way nicer than we had it. Now it's been 35 years since I've been there. Yeah, we moved into that place.
B
Every time I pass by there, I think about y' all living there.
C
Yeah. And so I walked in and just a chill hit me because they had remodeled it and look 100 times better when we. We did. And all those memories flooded by.
B
All the house, churches, the Bible talks.
C
So we go through and start talking about, well, what happened was we just instant started telling stories about what happened, you know, and we spent about an hour there, and just lovely. They reminded us of us, the younger version. You know, I'm sure he's not making a whole lot of money being a worship minister or whatever, but this was their starter house, and they're fixing to move up.
B

C
So. Well, you know what? It ended with us in a circle with both women, tears just flowing down their faces and just talking about how tough life is, you know, when you start off as a new married couple. And we had shared all these stories about Jesus and they were kind of moved by the stories we were telling because, I mean, it was literally hundreds of people came through there and came to Christ. So Missy, like, post it. She kind of tells that story on her social media and she's like, babe, that has gone viral. Because what happened is the hundreds of people I just talked about, well, they read the post and then it became a story time on there.
B
They're telling all the experiences they had there.
C
It was just so surreal remembering back then. And Missy brought up all the pictures, which, I mean, she had a whole presentation for this couple. She put up all these pictures of us. I didn't even have a beard. I was like, well, who's that guy? And she's like, babe, that's you. I did not recognize myself. I was like, when was this? I was trying to figure out the timing of it all. And then we had pictures of Reed. That's where we had Reed, our firstborn. He's. But anything that showed the house, she. She had the pictures, right? And so she actually had one just of her belly when she was pregnant with Reed, you know, which was a little awkward to be sharing with people, but I thought, I. I get. I get it. And it was a wonderful experience, and it brought us just a flood. It brought a flood of memories of all these wacky conversions. I mean, several of them that we had actually forgotten and just relived. And it was a wonderful experience. So I don't know how to describe that, but it just made me realize we had nothing, no money, just completely trusting in the Lord, and he just sent them our way. I mean, I know I was actively sharing Jesus with my friends and all, but when I. And it was just every night, and it led to Missy telling a funny story, and I'll end this story with this, but she one day put a sign on our outside door and put from Sunday at noon to 5, we do not want to be disturbed. She put that on the door. And one of the new brothers got offended because he showed up and went to knock. And we. We laughed about that because she said, you know, I just. There was no time. People were coming at midnight. And there was. And we were newly married, which was a lot to put on a newly married couple.
B
And we had a house a few blocks from y' all at this exact same time. And it was just like y' all at ministry house. And we were back and forth at each other's houses. But, you know, I thought about this. Actually, Jason, we're not going to get there, you know, in the next few podcasts, but in John 14, when Jesus uses the metaphor in my Father's house or many rooms, which there's a lot of theology that's been built off of that, it's not very good. But I thought about some of those early homes, because I can remember every home I've had in West Monroe, because I tie each one of them to what happened there in a spiritual sense. And the first house that we kind of built, it was actually the second house we built, but the first one that was like a big home, that's like, man, we. We finally have something we can really do ministry in.
A
I.
B
We like before we put the walls up and stuff, because they were building it, I had our house church go out, and we wrote scriptures all over the studs on the inside of the walls, and they. They painted them on the floor. And because, you know, Lindy was in our group there, and she's like an artist and just a lot of really cool stuff. And there are stuff that's like, people put post its inside those walls. Well, they're all still there. And like there's three people since then. But when Alex and Vinnie bought that house from us when they moved up in this area, and when they sold the house, they told this couple about that because they were obviously spiritually minded people. And she said, I knew God sent us to this place. So even just, I mean, it's just, it's. It's wood and siding or, you know, brick and mortar, these houses. But if it's a place where you're raising your family to serve God and there's community that happens there, those are special memories. I mean, they're good things.
C
Well, that's what led out the women crying. And look, I have to admit, me and the worship leader, we got a little misty eyed. But Missy said, Jesus is in these walls.
B
Yeah.
C
And. And y' all remind us of us. And we just, I mean, look, it's the first time I ever met these people and we're gathered around in a circle.
B
But now you have a connection zone.
C
Oh, it was, I thought it was awesome. But it to, to your point, the reason I brought it up, we didn't have any technology or look, we just was declaring Jesus and guess what? They just showed up. Yeah, you want to have a movement, Jesus is the key is what I'm trying to say.
A
And you don't have to have the right setup either. I mean, that's, that's a key part of it. I think a lot of people think, man, if I just need a better setup, I need a bigger living room, I need a bigger this or that or I wouldn't have enough parking or whatever the thing that you think would hold your home back from being a place of respite and a place for the kingdom work to be going on and for Jesus to be present. I mean, where two or three are gathered. Jill and I, when we were living in Louisiana, we planted a church with the big church there. But we took a group over to the campus of Ulm and that whole college ministry, that whole time that we did, we were out there for several years and we saw a lot of people come to Christ. But it all started we were living in a single wide trailer next to a buddy of mine's house. And that's actually in that living room that was super small. It started with four guys in a Bible study. And from there is where that church really kind of started out of. Well, when we went and merged with the other one. But I thought, man, you don't have to have the right setup. You just have to have a willing heart. And if you don't have a ton of money, you don't have a ton of food. Well, make peanut butter and jellies. Make bacon and eggs. Make beans and rice. I mean, just whatever you have, you use it. And God tends to show up when that happens.
C
That's so weird you're saying that. But remind just in our conversation, because she's like, I mean, that's the place where you fried potatoes every night for two years. That is a true fact. I fried potatoes every night for two.
A
Years because it's cheap and it fills you up. There's ways.
C
Because all the people came and they're like, man, who doesn't like French fries?
B
Yeah.
C
And these are homemade French fries.
B
Yeah, exactly.
C
I was like, and potatoes. I mean, trust me, if they kill you, I took 10 years off my life. We ate them every night. That was the hors d'. Oeuvre. There was nothing else. It was just fried potatoes. They came in and everybody started grabbing. So.
B
And we've talked about that. We learned that from our parents because we saw them do the exact same thing. And it didn't matter about the house. And in our case, in mom and Dad's place, which is still the place that's out there on the river, you know, so many memories. Recently, Lisa and I did a marriage series, and the people that were there suggested that we film in the living room at mom and Dad's house. And. And I. It just. I never had thought about that. And I thought, oh, man. So we walked in, like. Because mom and dad aren't. They don't live there anymore. And so whenever. Whenever I went back in there, my first thought was, this is where Lisa and I started dating, was right here in this living room. Same living room. I mean, it's been added into. And this. The memories flooded back of all the same exact things we're talking about with our own. Once we kind of developed our own individuality and spiritual walk. But we had that with them. We had the groups, we had the people. So it's just. That's the idea is passing that forward. I love your point, Zach. You don't have to have a mansion to be able to do it. In fact, you're probably going to reach way more people if it's not like that, if it's just a place people feel comfortable coming into, or a beard.
C
Which for me was a traumatic shot, looking at what I used to look like, which was terrifying. And, you know, a lot of people. She was reading some of those Comments because they gathered like within the segment of whatever the. I don't even know how to describe it. The social media post, right? So they were like exchanging memories. But one of them put, you know, where are the hands and feet of Jesus? But, you know, after reading John 13, you know, we're kind of like the toenails and the fingernails of Jesus because everything's in his hands and it's him working. And I think that I didn't read that somewhere. It's my depiction because despite all our.
B
Flaws, which is why we have to be clipped from time to time. Right. To use your analogy, we may have.
C
Come up with a little metaphor, the.
B
Toenails and fingernails of Jesus and get a lot of dirt under there too. So then that's the segue, I guess. Back to John 13 is because, Jess, you made a big point in the last podcast about the will of God being connected to the love of God. And so we were in the text in John 13, 12, 20, which is this section of Jesus is saying, you have to pay this forward. And he makes an interesting comment because he quotes Psalm 41:9, which we read about. He's about to get into Judas. And then later Peter, which is very disheartening when these guys were getting up to the major moment, and he's like, oh, yeah, by the way, one of you is going to betray me and one of you is going to deny me. That's fixing to happen. And so before he does that, he quotes this Isaiah 41:9. And so Jason left us hanging on Psalm 40, so I'm going to let him read it.
C
He quotes Psalm 49.
B
I mean, Psalm Psalm 49.
C
I wanted to read this 40 because I read Psalm 41:9. And for some odd reason, when I did the rabbit hole on the will of God, Psalm 40 came up. So that's how I came up with that. And I thought, well, huh, he quoted Psalm 41.
A
So the thing about cell phones is they tear up all the time, you know, And a lot of times people say, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Over time, the battery life can fade on these things. C
Listen to this psalm. Look.
B
I know, and these are both psalms of David.
C
You're always taking a risk reading this. This is absolutely fantastic. In light of John 13. He says, I waited patiently for the Lord. He turned to me and heard my cry. He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire.
B
I've heard that so many times. There's these old songs written about that.
C
He set my feet, which you have toenails. There you go on a rock. And gave me a firm place to. He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear and put their trust in the Lord, which, remember that's the whole idea of Jesus being the Word. The communication aspect of God is he wants you to trust him. I mean, he gave them the law. Trust me. Follow this, everything will work out. They were not faithful. Here comes Jesus. What does he do? I am the Word. Trust me. Watch what I did. You want to see what God is like. So that trust is big there. Verse 4. Blessed is the man who makes the Lord his trust, who does not look to the proud or to those who turn aside to false gods. Many, O Lord my God, are the wonders you have done. The things you planned for us no one can recount to you. Were I to speak and tell of them, they would be too many to declare sacrifice and offering. You did not desire. But my ears you have pierced. There's an alternate. Yeah. Have been opened. Think about it. He opens your heart and your mind and your ears. Burnt offerings and sin offerings you did not require. Then I said, here I am, I have come. It is written about me in the scroll, or alternate translation, come with the scroll written for me, which I thought was interesting. I desire. Here we go. Verse 8. To do your will. Oh, my God. Your law is within my heart. Well, when you look at what Jesus law, how he fulfilled the old law, you get into this law of love, which now we're back to Romans 13, which is right after Romans 12, talking about his, his will be transformed. I. I just think there's too many connections here. That's why I had to read this. I proclaim righteousness in the great assembly. I do not seal my lips, as you know, O Lord, I do not hide your righteousness in. In my heart. I speak of youf faithfulness and salvation. That's why I'm getting to this point, that this was love displayed him, washing the feet of the disciples, leaving an.
B
Example which fits the whole discussion we were having about the homes. I mean, what was special about that home you visited was what happened there.
C
You can't follow Jesus. Look, the top three thoughts that I had epiphanies in my life. And one night, as a 16 year old struggling to live as a Christian, I had a thought. I am not going to be able to be a disciple of Jesus quietly, because that was my comfort zone. I didn't want to ruffle any feathers. I didn't, you know, it was.
B
You were shy by nature.
C
I was shy by nature. But that thought, I mean, it just goes right in with it. He's having the same epiphany. I cannot hide this. It's undoable. Then it says, here we go, second part of 10, after he just said, I desire to do your will. Well, looky here. Remember what I said earlier in the podcast. Whenever you see the will of God, love is hovering. He says in 2Q10, I do not conceal your love and your truth from the great assembly. Remember Paul's charge in Ephesians 4, speak the truth in love. And then chapter 5, 1 and 2. What does he say in Ephesians? Live a life of love, just as Christ loved you. It's the same narrative.
B
And he says that he uses the word, follow the example of Christ, which is the words Jesus used in John 13.
C
Yeah. And what I'm proposing, you're saying, how big is what you're proposing? I'm telling you, it is a theme line of the entire Bible. Whenever you go down this road and you'll never be able to unsee this because trust me, I spent hours going through this. Do not withhold your mercy from me, O Lord. May your love and your truth always protect me. For troubles without number surround me. My sins have overtaken me and I cannot see. They are more than the hairs of my head and my heart fails within me. I mean, does this not just absolutely describe that God in the midst of his enemies, uses us in the midst of our struggles, which you're going to see this picture play out at the end with Mary, Thomas and Peter, how what Jesus did produce not only love and forgiveness, but a mission that I'm going to use them because in their responses to him being resurrected, it's like you see their flaws or see their weaknesses. Like with Mary, it was her tears. With Thomas, it was his doubts. With Peter, it was his denial. He had just denied him. Right. And it's predicted here in John 13.
B
Which is interesting, Jace, that it's just a large picture of the Psalms. They give you David's heart. And you can compare these Psalms with against the history of reading in, you know, first and Second Kings. First examine what was happening in his life and you can see how you see the events of his life, but then you see what he's thinking inside. It's very, very powerful.
C
Well, in this next verse, now, you know, I don't want to overstate my case, but I'm fixing to this verse says, be pleased, O Lord, to save me, O Lord, come quickly to help me. And look, 99% of the time when you read something like that, we're thinking from our religious background in America, oh, one day the Lord is going to come and save me. Or we might use it in the, you know, in our initial surrender to Christ. Like, oh, he came and saved me and then I have to wait and then he's going to come, really save me when he comes and gets me. But the more I read and the more I go down through the rabbit hole about. Unless I go, the whole reason I came is so I can return to the Father. And unless I go, which we're going to be introduced to him, giving us his spirit.
B
Yeah, in 14.
C
Hey, he comes every day in the way we live. Love that, love, we can't take ownership of that. It's a contagion that comes from God, that's passed on to us. And he literally is coming every day in your life as you're walking around the planet pointing people to Jesus. I mean, I think that's the mindset.
B
You know what it is? It's the old line that whenever they came up with this product called Olean and they put it into, it turned out to be not healthy, but they put it in chips and all of a sudden you could eat chips without like the supposedly bad stuff in them. And Willie said that to Rick, Forbear. He said, chips are back, baby. And Rick said they never left.
C
Oh, exactly. Well, that's what I'm saying.
B
I mean, that's Jesus. He's coming back. It's like, wait a minute, he never left.
A
It's not that he's coming every day, but because of the coming of the Holy Spirit. He's here, he's present.
C
Well, that's my point, Zach. It's like, well, you have obscure verses like 1st Thessalonians 5, 4 that says, well, don't be surprised at the Lord's coming. It shouldn't surprise you. Why shouldn't it surprise you? Because he's in you every day. His spirit. You're being constantly reminded of this connection of heaven and earth and humans meeting in a human body through his spirit. So that's what my point is. I just feel like we want to go, to use one of your words that is in the Bible Epicurean, where God's a million miles away and one day we may see him and he just cut us off. And we're oblivious. You know, he's oblivious. We're oblivious of any power. And it's just so untrue based on what Jesus is sharing here in John 13 and David is echoing hundreds of years before. I mean, what's he talking about? Come and save him, Help me. He wants his presence in his life to change him. May all who seek to take my life be put to shame and confusion. And Jesus is going to get to this in John 15. He's going to give them the same speech that David is getting. If you go public for Jesus, there's going to be trouble. I mean, we got all misty eyed about being in that old house, but it also reminded me of how much persecution and opposition we endured every day. And we didn't have any money. It was all a struggle. It was. And we were crying out like, david, Lord, give us. How about a little help here?
A
So Jill and I were getting ready for our camping trip and we Got sucked into the vortex known as online shopping. And of course I couldn't find my wallet. Means more full transparency. I actually own shares in Shopify.
A
We use Shopify for that Commander of the blind and the unashamed merch.

Yeah, Missy uses Shopify for Logtown Estate.

Go to shopify.com unashamed shopify.com Unashamed. Well, as I said on a previous podcast, I was reading through the comments and it's funny that you're talking about this because you're talking about like salvation kind of understanding Salvation is you get this thing that you do one time as opposed to like this living with Christ thing idea. Like Christ living in you and being in you through the Spirit. And one of the comments said that we don't understand the book of Romans. The book of Romans is the doctrine of grace. And I'm like, but that's not all it is. I mean, you read Romans chapter 8 and it makes this incredible, paints a beautiful picture of beyond just our justification. Yes, we receive grace in our justification, but we also receive grace in that God is now going to take up residence in the body of people. And when he uses the language of the Holy spirit in Romans 8, 9, he says, you're not of the realm of the flesh, but are of the realm of the spirit. If indeed the Spirit of God lives in you, by the way, that's a capital S. He's talking about the Holy Spirit here. And if anyone does not have the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of Christ, so he's identifying the Holy Spirit with the Spirit of Christ. They don't belong to Christ. But. But if Christ is in you, then even though your body is subject to death because of sin, the Spirit, the Holy Spirit gives life because of righteousness. And if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of his Spirit who lives in you. So the language is so clear in Romans 8. And so the point of that, it's one of the big points of the Book of Romans. It's not just a doctrine about grace. I mean, I think that's to limit it. This is a revelation of Christ is going to live and take up his residence in the bodies of believers. And that's exactly what you're talking about. And I think that's really good news for those of us who are in Christ Jesus, because we don't have to have a spirit of fear or timidity anymore. We can actually look at our Heavenly Father and, and cry out abba, Father. Because we have a spirit of sonship, because we're connected with Christ.
C
Yeah, I think that's a great point, Zach. So I want to finish reading this. So it says, may all who seek. This is verse 14. To take my life be put to shame and confusion. May all who desire my ruin be turned back into disgrace. And then verse 15 is interesting. It says, may those who say to me, aha.
B
Aha.
C
Did you know I went down a rabbit hole on that? It's all over the place in the Old Testament, look. And it's always in a context of where non believers who don't believe that there is a God or he cares about humans, when they see something bad happen to people who are believers, they go, aha. Aha. See, you're a. This is a joke. If there was a God, this wouldn't happen.
B
By the way, they're still doing that.
C
The three friends of Job embodied aha. And I thought, man, we need some kind of T shirt that goes against that in a Jesus way. Because now we use ha Ha. That's like the haha you may use it for. Yeah, that was kind of funny, but not really. That's usually when I use it ha. When I say ha, that means they thought this was funny, but I didn't. But they, they in their Culture. It was, aha, we, we got you. You're a hypocrite. Because why are these bad things happening? Which I just thought that was interesting.
B
And it still goes on.
C
May be. May they be appalled at their own shame, which I did notice too, when I saw all the places where that's used. It always says that that is to their shame, that, that word shame. They're. They're. They're showing their shame for taking on the God of the universe and him working in people. I just think it's really interesting and that's why I wanted to read this psalm.
B
I thought I always flip that Jay, because I thought so what you're telling me is it's. We're both going to face hard times and things we can't explain, but you're telling me it's better to not have faith in something bigger than myself than to be like you with the ahas and have nothing to face it with. Yeah, don't go there with me. That makes no sense to me.
C
Well, I use that as motivation. And it's like, I mean, one of the stories that we told at that little house with them, because I was like, how are your neighbors? And they were like.
B
And I was like, that's lived on.
C
It's so funny because I said, you know, my greatest.
B
Some houses that have the ministry blessing apparently have the other side of the coin.
C
I told them, I said, the greatest struggle in our marriage, obviously at that time was Missy and I being so kind of detached, just newly married because it was just so busy. There was no alone time. We were just. And Missy told a couple of funny stories that I laugh so much because what happens is when you hear that story and hear there's hundreds of people coming to Christ. Well, what happened is when you, when you're involved with hundreds of young people and they're coming to Christ, you start hearing what they're doing behind closed doors and then see, it ain't pretty. Oh, all of a sudden I'm like, man, I need a counselor. But I'm like, well, I have the Holy Spirit. And I remember one night there was two girls that got in a fight. Young Christians, they're both in the Lord and they got in a hair pulling fist fight in our presence. And so I looked at Missy and I was like, you need to talk to them?
B
Well, yeah, you think, what gave you that talking to.
C
And so she goes in there and talks to them. Because I was having. I think we were sharing with people. I was. That they weren't in Christ. Yet I was like, well, I can't handle that. Which I know that's extreme. They're literally having a fight. You gotta remember, we're in our early 20s. She comes back and says, can I talk to you for a second? And I'm like, sure. She's like, they started sharing their life and she started naming the things. I mean, just as bad as it gets. And she's like, I'm not qualified to. These people need.
B
What she's saying is hair pulling is the least of the patients.
C
And she said, well, I'm like, on the edge of my seat. I said, what did I say? And she said, you looked at me and said, you have the Holy Spirit. You're qualified. Deal with it. She said, I got teared up and I thought, I guess I'm just going to have to do it. And so she did. I was like, you know, you know, this is where we're at. But anyway, I know we're almost out.
B
You can't fix it.
C
I was going to tell the other story about my neighbors. The other struggle was loving my neighbor. But I eventually shared Jesus with all of them.
B
And a few people out of that house were led to Jesus.
C
Exactly. So I'll read the last two verses. But may all who seek you will remember the whole rabbit hole. We did that. When you seek him, you will find out that he's been seeking you all along. That's why he came. That is his will out of love. Go back to the story about Zacchaeus and you'll see that. Rejoice and be glad in you. May those who love your salvation, which is that contagious love. Look, the Lord be exalted, which is where John 13:3 started. Everything is in his hands. Yet I am poor and needy. May the Lord think of me. You are my help and my deliverer. Oh, my God, do not delay.
B
What a picture of the Old Testament. So that leads us back into 41, which we made the point last time. And I'll leave it here. We'll pick it up next time. That when you read Genesis 3:15, you see sin enter the world. The idea of Jesus crushing the one who has the power of death because of his love for coming here and the idea that you would strike his heel. And so that's the metaphor that he used. So we'll pick it up next time and flesh this out some more. Wonderful text. John 13. See you next time. Thanks for listening to the Unashamed podcast. • This sets a relaxed, informal tone and segues into deeper topics shortly after.
[00:36 – 06:01] – Personal Technology Troubles & Lessons Learned
• Speaker B recounts his recent misadventures in Ireland when his phone “surrendered” overseas, humorously emphasizing how indispensable smartphones have become in travel and daily life.
– Notable quote from B at [00:36]: “I am not my father's son when it comes to phone. I can't live without a phone anymore.”
• Speaker C and A chime in with witty remarks about old-fashioned navigation and how young people seem to handle technology seemingly effortlessly.
• The conversation touches on the contrast between old and new ways of communicating and the humorous pitfalls of relying too much on modern devices.
[07:17 – 09:20] – Biblical Reflections on Identity and “I AM”
• The discussion shifts as speakers compare the seeming paradox of relying on technology with the deep, self-revelatory “I AM” statements of Jesus.
• Speaker C reflects on John’s Gospel and the subtle yet powerful ways Jesus uses declarations like “it is I” in moments of crisis (for example, walking on water during a storm) to stress his divine identity.
– At [07:31], C muses: “I never used in my life… It is I about anything. But he was, under the circumstance, there’s a storm and here's a human walking on the water.”
• The hosts discuss how such declarations go beyond literal statements to express a profound theological truth about God’s ever-present help and likeness to human experience.
[10:40 – 12:31] – Product Spotlight & Transition
• Speaker A introduces the new Chef IQ mini oven and wireless thermometer with energetic details about its features, highlighting how technology—in kitchens as well as in our lives—can enhance everyday tasks.
• Although energetic and detailed, these segments serve as a backdrop to the wider theme of embracing innovation while remembering the core message of faith and community.
[18:07 – 22:36] – Revisiting Memories & Missy’s Anniversary Gift
• Speaker C shares an intimate narrative about a memorable anniversary gift from his wife Missy—a visit to a former home with deep spiritual and personal history.
– At [18:07], C details how he realized this gift wasn’t a material present but a journey back through shared memories of early ministry and formative experiences in modest surroundings.
• The couple’s recollections of the “old house” include humorous and touching anecdotes (such as recounting their early days and even the iconic “fried potatoes every night” memories) which remind them and their listeners that the heart of ministry lies not in grand settings but in the genuine, warm fellowship of believers.
• Emotions run high as these memories prompt a flood of recollections about the challenges, triumphs, and spiritual growth experienced together.
[22:36 – 29:03] – Embracing Ministry in Modest Settings
• Expanding on the theme, Speaker B and A discuss how intimate, modest home environments have often been the cradle for ministry and church growth.
• They argue that one does not need an impressive setup to witness God’s presence: “Where two or three are gathered…” speaks to the simplicity that can yield powerful spiritual experiences.
• Anecdotes include memories of Bible studies held in humble settings, and the symbolic value of homes that echo with past stories of conversion, challenges, and God’s grace.
[29:03 – 34:06] – Deeper Dive into Biblical Psalm Reflections
• Speaker C reads a Psalm (with input from B and A) that evokes the themes of deliverance, trust, and the active, ongoing presence of God in one’s life.
– A memorable moment occurs at [36:07] when C eloquently states how the Psalm encapsulates God’s rescuing power: “He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire.”
• The discussion connects these ancient texts to the present reality, emphasizing that though life’s challenges persist, God’s spirit continues to work in our lives—just as it did in the days of David and Jesus.
[34:06 – 38:46] – Balancing Struggle and Hope in Faith
• After revisiting the Psalms, the conversation turns to the reality of life’s hardships and the community’s role in facing them together, using both biblical accounts and personal narratives.
• Speakers reflect on themes like the paradox of weakness and divine strength, and how criticisms (“aha’s” from non-believers) are met with the assurance of God’s continuing presence.
[38:46 – 45:22] – Practical Applications & Final Reflections on Ministry
• The hosts highlight that the very struggles they recall—whether personal, marital, or ministry-related—are integral to their faith journey.
• They discuss how living in humble settings and openly sharing personal stories can inspire others to trust God’s deliverance and love.
• Speaker C summarizes the idea that a genuine encounter with Jesus is about accepting His transformative power, no matter how small the setting or how simple the meeting.
[45:22 – 55:03] – Concluding Discussions and Theological Insights
• The latter part of the conversation interweaves further biblical reflection (citing passages from Romans and continuing with John 13) with the idea that the Holy Spirit makes Jesus present every day.
• The discussion reaffirms that while technology and modern conveniences change how we communicate, the timeless truths of Scripture about grace, sacrifice, and communal worship remain unchanged.
• The hosts share final thoughts on the importance of being present for one another, with a reminder that “where two or three are gathered...,” every heart has a chance to encounter divine grace.
