Jason
I am unashamed. What about you?
Zach
Well, that's the podcast opener right there.
Jason
Oh, my gosh,
Chase
Maddie. Just when you think. Just when you think. It can't get any worse for a potty situation.
Zach
Yeah, welcome to Unash.
Chase
Jason. Just had a situation has happened here.
Jason
Doing this.
Chase
I guess we're doing this. Jason.
Jason
I'm not sure I can work in these conditions.
Chase
The timer is rolling.
Jason
In my family, we have a real sensitive gag reflex.
Chase
Zach has gagged on the podcast before.
Jason
Well, I have it, but it has Zach. He can't even hear a story.
Chase
This will probably make him gag. What you're about to tell.
Jason
We're five minutes late in starting.
Zach
I can already feel it coming up
Jason
because that was late. And so I'm like, you know what? Let me just run to the bathroom before we start this session. Well, when I opened the door, the door was. Was closed. And I, you know, knocked on the door. I hear the fan running. You know how the.
Chase
This is the nearest bathroom that we share with Duck call room and Sadie, but they're not here right now.
Zach
This is the one by the. Like that little. By the conference room.
Chase
Yeah, by the conference room.
Zach
And then there's. And then there's another.
Jason
Okay, there's a couple more, like on the door. You know, ain't nobody in there. So I opened the door. Well, I look and it's like what happened here last night? Because it, it. But it looked like someone like it. What it looked like is somebody kind of had a party or a hangout in the bathroom. There were machines and there were tools, but there were like styrofoam cups with Drake. It was a mess.
Chase
We do have a. We do have a roofing crew here.
Jason
There's a roofing crew. So that's what I thought. I thought, well, I think one of those, you know, guys might have hung out in here or something. That's what I was thinking. But taking a break, there's this huge. What I thought was the fan was this huge machine. I was guessing some kind of humidifier or dehumidifier. Maybe they're Dehumidifier. Yeah, that they're drying out the place.
Chase
Could have a leak in there. Okay.
Jason
I was like. I did pause and think, wow, what happened? It's usually clean and sparkly. Well, so, number one, the door was closed. Number two, the. The potty lid was closed when I opened that lid. I don't know how to describe this in a PG13 manner, but it looked like a bunch of stale yams had deconstructed and lost their substance.
Chase
Imagine that.
Jason
Immediately started to gag reflex. So I looked around for cameras because thought, who would have played this kind of sick joke? And then I ran for my life.
Chase
And he came here and told us that whatever you do, you didn't.
Zach
You didn't flush it. You didn't at least get the foot up there and flush it,
Chase
Jason, I don't want to stir any of that up.
Jason
Well, with all the machines, the humidifier,
Chase
somebody's going to have to deal with it, I thought.
Jason
I mean, evidently flushing is not an option. Obviously, someone is on the case. And this is what.
Zach
Was the floor wet? Was there any other.
Jason
I didn't notice the floor being wet, but I just.
Chase
Currently looking for some caution tape.
Jason
What I'm saying is, you don't have a bunch of machines whirling and all this activity with an unflushed commode. The last thing I wanted to do is to flush it and then have that creature expand onto the floor because it could have.
Chase
That could have been the problem to begin.
Jason
Well, exactly. I just walked away.
Chase
Why is that so funny?
Jason
I don't know.
Zach
I probably should. I probably should file a complaint with the dad.
Chase
You. You are. You are a border here.
Jason
Border.
Chase
A tenant. You are a tenant here at Dunk Matter.
Zach
Pay rent.
Jason
I mean, we're paying rent. Just tell them Jay said we cannot work your people.
Chase
But anyway, and all right, and unashamed nation, on behalf of our crew here, I apologize for the way we opened this podcast. Well, look, it was so funny.
Jason
It's called real life. If people can't deal with it, I Mean I thought it was some kind of weird who done it puzzle.
Zach
Yeah.
Jason
So boy, ma', am, I had a long night last night. I mean extremely so in our world.
Chase
This is what you face when you got here.
Jason
Exactly. So not much sleep. So we had size birthday party last night.
Chase
Oh.
Jason
Now it's actually kind of weird.
Chase
So I know what I know and I know one thing that was included in if you're going to have a side birthday party, you got to play a few cards.
Jason
We play cards. This thing was a production which number one they said five o'. Clock. Five o' clock in the afternoon. That's when this starts. So you're figuring out what 5 to 7. I left at midnight. I said I'm out of here, get some sleep. But it was, it was really. It's probably the most I've left in a seven hour period in my life. Look, they had, they rented this little community building and they bought crawfish and Philip, his handler boiled the crawfish.
Chase
Wow.
Jason
Best crawfish I've ever eaten. I mean who knew the man had skills.
Chase
The man's multi skill.
Jason
There were several people they brought their wives and so because that's what psy way he said he wanted to eat crawfish and he his fate he said and he wanted his favorite singer. So there's this guy, I've met him before, can't remember his name, sorry but but and he just has a little keyboard and a handheld mic with a little you know, Walmart sound system. And it's as country a music as you've ever heard in your life. The funny part was psy wailed. Wailed without a microphone, deafening on every song. And most of these songs I'd never heard of.
Chase
And he knew everyone by heart.
Jason
So one of them, I was telling Missy about this today. I was like there was some country song that like the. Because he, he worked his way to the pinnacle and I figured out size favorite song was the last one. And I mean sa just went off and I thought I've heard this song but not in this format. I was, I was. So I went home, I was telling Missy I had to look this song up because I thought. But I, when I, when I did the Internet search, I put in the search. I've never been to heaven, but I've been to Oklahoma. You've heard that song, but that's not the name of the song.
Chase
Right.
Jason
And I put country music song. So it, it had trouble, you know and it came up this band three dog Night. I was Like Three Dog Night. They're not country because that's three years after I was born. That's. They're kind of rock and roll. That's right.
Chase
That's where I remember the song from. Is that.
Jason
Well, that's the song.
Chase
Yeah.
Jason
But this guy had It. Had his version turning everything into, you know, think and so. And so. Absolutely loved it. But when I was looking at that song, I thought, what a depressing song. But. But it was so funny because this guy's like, you know, I hadn't been to. It starts off, I've never been to Spain. That's the name of it. Yeah. Never been to Spain, but I've been to Oklahoma. No, it goes, I've been Arizona. I've never. No, I've never been to Spain. But. Oh, good grief. I'm gonna have to look the lyrics up on it. But. And then he's like, the next classic. The next stands is, I've never been to England, but I like the Beatles. Oh, I know I never been to Spain, but I like the music. Yeah. Like. And then Annie was like, I don't like their women. They're insane. Or whatever. He says that in the song. But then he says. Which is interesting because it kind of. Theologically. I thought he'd never been to heaven, but he'd been to Oklahoma. But he was born there, so he really didn't remember. And that. That's where the Arizona comes up. Could have been Arizona. I don't even remember.
Chase
Just some place out.
Jason
Yeah. That's kind of what the whole song is about. I thought, man, people are lost. But you know how we talk about heaven coming down. It's just. What. Why does it matter?
Chase
That's basically so what you're. You think the. Their meaning was heaven, Oklahoma, Arizona. What difference does it make? It's just awesome open space.
Jason
I mean, I like the Beatles, but does it really matter? I've never been there. Yeah. And he just. We're just like restless. I mean, there was a lot of spirit when I got to breaking down the song. But anyway. But it was really fun. It was something less laugh about. And then we play cards and. Which. Look, let me tell you this, though. So Size handler Philip, who cooked the crawfish, he's like, hey, Sa wants to get a couple of metal detectors from your buddies at Garrett. Because, you know, he knows we did a show with him and all and he won't. He know. He knows they. They. They cost some money, but he's fine with that because he wants to give them to the dentist who fixed his teeth. Oh, yeah. Because he's like, well, what a nice gesture, you know? So I. You know, I sent a. I don't know what kind of arrangement he thought I had, but, like, if I was going to get them free or what. But I was like, that arrangement, that ship, you know, is sailed. But anyway, I sent a text to the guy I knew, and he said, send him a bill, you know? And they're like, oh, great. And so when the detectors came in, I got them in. Well, I told Philip. I was like, well, I got him. And he's like, oh, that was. That was really nice of you. I was like, well, I had nothing to do with it. I just. I just made a call, you know, and I told him, you know, that, you know, this. I was going to take care of it. And he's like, oh, no. He said for. He told me for them to send you the bill. I was like, happy birthday. I was like, this old joker. Look, metal detectors, especially the ones that I got, they're not that cheap. I mean, they're a few hundred dollars. And, I mean, look, for what you get out of it, it's priceless. But so I thought, I cannot believe that. What am I going to do, though? He's 78 years old, and so, like, happy birthday.
Chase
He did the same thing to you. He did to Willie, when he said, I need a fence because these people are walking on my property back in, the highlight of the show. And Willie's like, all right, put you up a fence, and I'll do it. And $30,000 later.
Jason
Yeah, he seems to have a habit. But here's the good part. Look, there's a guy that I met who works, and I think he's up into the upper management at Garrett. I kid you not. He sends me a text, and it's like, don't worry about that. I'm taking care of that for you. Tell Cy happy birthday. Which they didn't know.
Chase
Yeah, they were going to have to. All that story.
Jason
I was like, this guy just saved me a couple grand, you know? But so anyway, I was like, happy birthday. So that happened. But I was like, well, you got to watch that old guy. He's smarter than he looks. He is. And so then we wound up playing cards and something. This story has a really good payoff because you're not gonna believe this. So, you know, for the first hour, played his usual self, you know, at least.
Chase
Well, I was gonna ask, so when is your birthday? Do you get, like, a pass? Do you get some free entries.
Jason
Oh they bought him win well I gave him a hundred dollar bill for his. For his birthday so that went in the. I'm sure that's.
Chase
You'll get that back.
Jason
He'll lose that at some point and that's kind of what the thinking and. And he started off typical. I'm gonna tell you about our end of that game. I don't know if it was a supernatural intervention. He could not lose. He literally was defying mathematical odds and probabilities because no matter whatever the Almighty was blessed stretch where I think he won about 20 hands in a row. It's just comical and.
Chase
And how fired up was he?
Zach
That's what I bet he lets you
Jason
know here was the word The. The. It was not a birthday night. It was a booyah. And you know what was crazy is nobody really minded. No he's not a very good player.
Chase
Right.
Jason
He usually does it well. But I tell you what. Last night the man could not be stopped. So happy birthday. So it was awesome.
Chase
Here's what AI says. Never been to Spain written by Hoyt Axton which is an old country guy actually Jace and famously performed by Three Dog Night is a 1971 country slash rock song. So it was written.
Jason
Well I heard the country.
Chase
It was written as a country version country zone but Three Dog Night actually. Who are the most famous for us reflecting on wistful curiosity travel and finding familiarity and foreign things through music. The lyrics highlight a narrator comfortable with their own life experiencing the world through proxy or imagination rather than direct experience.
Jason
It actually makes more sense now.
Chase
So there you go.
Jason
Well that's the exact opposite of what we're called to do in Jesus.
Chase
It's never. It's not a Christian so never experienced. That's funny. I like that.
Jason
That was. That was. It was fun. But. Happy birthday.
Chase
Happy birthday, sir. I'm sure. I'm sure you'll hear this story again through size eyes. You go tune in to duck call room in the next few days whenever that airs. Anything interesting happened this weekend?
Zach
We were. Yeah, we were just entertaining folks all weekend. We, we did a little. Jill had a baby shower yesterday, and then we had a dinner last night with Jonathan Paggio and Brett Weinstein at the house. So that was interesting to have those guys in.
Jason
Well, you're dropping these names, but tell
Chase
us who they are, Jason. I are not.
Zach
So, yeah, they have, they both have podcasts. I don't actually know the name of their podcast, so I have to check that out. But Brett was, he was a professor somewhere in upstate Washington. Got fired back in the early days of the cancel culture.
Chase
Yeah, cancer culture, I thought that's where I recognize the name from. Yep, I remember the story.
Zach
Jonathan does a thing called Symbolic World. So he's. There's a lot of interaction kind of in the, the storytelling space, how the world is symbolic and a lot of symbolic religious symbols and things like that. So it was an interesting time. I made, of course, you know, I made our, our famous smoked beef tenderloin. So we. Oh, that's always good.
Chase
You were rolling out the dog, what we call.
Zach
I rolled out the big dog, the smoked beef tenderloin with the, with the green beans with the mushrooms in them. And we did a Little twice baked potato action. It was good.
Chase
I expect that on my upcoming visit, Zach, when.
Zach
Well, you can't eat all that anymore.
Chase
Well, I can eat the green beans and the tenderloin. That's right.
Zach
That's what we'll do for you.
Chase
I just have to stay away from this twice baked potato.
Zach
And then I preached yesterday on Hebrews chapter 5:11 through Hebrews 6:3. So there was that too.
Jason
Oh, you preach chapter 5 because I wanted 5:11. I wanted to get back into Hebrews 10 at some point in this dissertation.
Chase
Did you lay one down?
Zach
You know, I, you know, it went well.
Chase
Are you more of a teaching pastor, Zach? Is that kind of. Are you more teaching than preaching? Because, you know, there's a. Yeah, I'd rather teach.
Zach
I don't, I don't like to. I'm not a very good.
Chase
Well, there are teaching pastors and there are preaching pastors. I mean, and obviously all of it has a little bit of overlap, but there is a difference between the two. And some people are very good at just to get you to a point of, you know, salvation or, you know, thinking about your life. Preaching and then teaching to me is more kind of what we do on here, which is to.
Jason
Minus the nonsense.
Chase
Minus the nonsense. We just do that for. To amuse ourselves. But yeah, to get to kind of the root of the scripture. But there's a challenge. There's a challenge in that too.
Zach
Yeah, I kind of, I don't feel like I'm like super inspirational, you know, I mean, I'd like to be, but, you know, you kind of know your giftings and my, the way that I'll teach the text is I try to like really center it in what is the actual point of the text. I try not to drift outside of that. Now, I may go to other passages like, you know, the, the passage I was preaching on is about maturity. You know, you got to get off the milk and you got to move on to maturity. But if you, if you see how that text is located in the scripture, it's right in the right. Right after the Hebrew writer introduces Melchizedek. And then he doesn't really go into great depth on who Melchizedek was in relationship to how Christ is going to be this new type of priest because he interrupts it with this warning. He's basically like, man, we got. There's a lot I want to tell you about this, but you guys are too immature to hear it. And then he kind of chastises them and tells him to grow Up. And then right after that, he goes right back in to explaining how Christ is a new type of priest in the order of Melchizedek. So he spends a couple chapters beyond that. So I try to center and locate the text in what's the bigger story and then drill back down into that particular moment. But sometimes the hard part is I want to get ahead of me or get ahead of the text.
Jason
So what was your bumper sticker? Truth you unveiled from going on from milk to maturity.
Chase
Yeah. What'd you hang on that thinking bumper
Zach
sticker maybe that essentially your calling is to be a priest in a new type of order.
Jason
And let's talk about this.
Chase
Yeah, that's pretty good.
Jason
I heard a good sermon from your buddy John Tyson. I mean, I told you about this something. They were doing a series on the church and this was on the temple, which wasn't really anything I hadn't heard before, but. Except maybe at the end and I want to bring that up, but it was fantastic. But I think from where we are in first, John, he started this, this sermon off with a very interesting story. And I think it was 1991. A group of scientists went to somewhere in Arizona, Oracle, Arizona, I believe. Can't make this up. Oracle. And they were going to create or try to create an atmosphere that was functional without any outside. So like 3 acre property built this building still there today. And it was like, we're gonna survive. And the, the goal was to be able to colonize space with this model. So like let's say we go to the moon, you just take this model, build the little sphere. So you got farm animals, you got everything that's in the outside. They moved it inside.
Chase
Okay.
Jason
And then eight scientists were going to live there for two years without going outside. So which, what could go wrong?
Chase
Which is apropos for today because they're actually talking about building a lunar base now.
Jason
So, yeah, if they all. It's all about science, you know, there's been four movies over what happened here.
Chase
Okay.
Jason
It did not end well. They created.
Zach
Go figure.
Jason
Well, his whole point for telling the story, which was really nothing to do with what happened there was. This is what happens when you're just like, we're going to do us and we don't need God, we don't need any other force outside of ourselves.
Chase
The creation of human utopia was the
Jason
attempt we are going to create for ourselves a world in a building, in a structure. So what's fascinating to me is like they lost oxygen and just people started just the relational Aspect spec went way downhill. But their biggest problem was ants and roaches flourished for whatever reason. And. And it was something about.
Chase
Which sounds like the outside just kept coming inside.
Jason
It was in the desert. They couldn't. You know, they basically. It made me kind of appreciate Noah in the ark, you know, trying to get everybody in a concealed thing, even for 40 days, pretty rough. But so it. It just deteriorated. And then they tried it again. I mean, it, like, three years later, more of a disaster than the first time. Multiple universities has bought this structure because. And that. Because they're wanting to do research. And so now they just turned it into a tourist attraction. Like the College of Arizona. Yeah, the University of Arizona bought it now, but like Columbia had. It was just real fascinating to think, what are we thinking that we can. I thought more practically, this is what happens when you think you can detach yourself from the Creator.
Chase
Yeah.
Jason
I mean, there's a reason all this is working in perfect harmony, and it's not because of humans. It's just not right. So, yeah, it was very fascinating. But he said that story, which he launched into the temple. The idea that the temple idea started in the garden, which. I've heard people say that, but I really never went down the rabbit hole. But I was fascinated to see how much in common the garden and the temple and the tabernacle had. The commonalities. I mean, he had a beginning with
Chase
the presence of God being right there with people. Right, Zach?
Jason
I mean.
Zach
Yeah.
Jason
Well, the presence of God, the image of God, the way the tabernacle was set up, like in the center was the holy of holies. Well, what was in the center of the garden? The entrance of the temple and the garden were both from the east. They both had the cherubim presence, remember, guarding the garden. So it was just fascinating to me. It was both on a mountain. Because the. The garden. Because you're thinking garden, you're not thinking mountain, but other places in the. In the New Testament, it was. It was a garden on a mountain.
Chase
Yeah.
Jason
And it was just fascinating to me.
Chase
It's always hard to see our poochies getting old. Sort of like us, right? Things get a little slower. They don't quite get around as much as they used to. Do you see that with your two?
Jason
Oh, yeah. They're just downright grumpy. And so anything I can do to keep them happy, I'm gonna do so.
Chase
Alex's dog, Meatball, is a part of our compound, but she's getting older, and to watch her, you know, not quite those Joints responding the way they're supposed to, has led us to Ruff Greens. Jason
And he started his text, which this is why I thought of First John. I wanted to bring it up in First Corinthians 3, 16, and 17. I wanted to read that. I thought you would find this fascinating, Zach, since you're. You talk about the temple a lot when you read this, because we usually read. There's three Temple references in 1st 2 Corinthians, but this one is so profound. And of course, he's in the context of. In verse 10, talking about God has given me a. Well, verse 9. For we are God's fellow workers. You are God's field. God's building. It's like where the. The temple, the house is. What he's. He's leading up to the foundation is Christ. That's verse 11. And so then he talks about putting all your. Your eggs in the basket, kind of like this. This.
Chase
Yeah. The example of all these verses, Jason, that's what they tried to do. Build this place.
Jason
Build this place. You know, it's not anything that we can build. And so he gets down to verse 16. And this is what got my attention, because that third word we did, that deal about knowing and the two different words, and this know is the one that was the intuitive relationship Oriented. No, that's the other one. Yeah. This one is the intuitive. Just. There's something in you that realizes that you should deduct that. And then he makes this statement. Don't you know that you yourselves are God's temple and that God's spirit lives in you? Well, that eerily sounds like when he says in First John 3, in verse, the last verse 24, those who obey his commands live in him and he in them. And this is how we know that he lives in us. We know it by the Spirit he gave us. And just think about this, about the presence, verse 19 of chapter 3. This, then, is how we know that we belong to the truth and how we set our hearts at rest in his presence.
Chase
Yeah.
Jason
So you see this. So think presence. Because God, when you think, well, how. Why was that constructed like a temple? Because God was present. I mean, at the end of the day, it's what it is.
Chase
Right.
Jason
And so how should we respond to that? Is where he was headed. But back to the verse, it says, don't you know yourselves are God's temple and that God's spirit lives in you. Well, what's the answer to that question? Yes.
Chase
Yeah.
Jason
If anyone. I thought this was profound. If anyone destroys God's temple, well, who is that? That's people who have the spirit. God will destroy them. Don't mess with the people of God where he's dwelling.
Chase
Yeah.
Jason
For God's temple is sacred and you are that temple. I mean, what a statement.
Chase
Yeah.
Jason
And so he went from Genesis to Revelation with that temple theme. Even an obscure passage in Ezekiel 10 where God, Ezekiel has this vision because of idolatry and wickedness, which is in Ezekiel 8, God removes His presence right from. From the temple. And I just thought it was fascinating, it was good news. And it's. I think it's more in line with what we're studying in first John where he says, this life that we encountered, that started in the first paragraph that we saw and that. And that has appeared. And keep in mind when Jesus said, I am the temple, just in John 2, remember, you destroy this temple and it'll come back in three days. Oh, it's taken us 46 years to build the temple. He was saying, I am the place where God and humans meet the Presence. And So then in 1 John 1, when he gets down to verse 4, and he's like, we've been included in that fellowship, verse three and four, we proclaim to you that we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his son, Jesus Christ. Now, he made an. He alluded at the end to. He said, I think I figured it out. And he used a word that's mainly used in marriage, but. And it's kind of a New Age therapy word that people use, and it's called attunement. But it got me to thinking because he talked about atonement, which first John talks about, but he basically, without saying it, because I made the connection, I thought, well, that sounds a lot like atonement. But his point was, without really making it, I put that together and looked up what attunement is. And it's like listening to the voice and being attentive to the presence of.
Chase
Right.
Jason
Being attached to the presence of another person. So people use that in therapy. But I thought, well, what a catchy saying. And I looked it up on the Internet and there's three or four other people that have made this connection. But it's atonement that leads to attunement, because you're listening this. The fellowship you're having with the God of the universe.
Chase
Yeah.
Jason
And I really thought it was fascinating.
Chase
Well, you know, it's interesting you said that. I hadn't thought about this till now. And you may have to look it up while I'm talking in Genesis 4. 1 and see what the Hebrew word is for new there. Because the niv translates is just what we know it is in its. In its physical sense. Adam lay with his wife Eve. But, you know, a lot of the other translations will say, knew his wife Eve.
Zach
Oh, no.
Chase
And I'm like.
Zach
It's like a relational knowledge.
Chase
Yeah.
Jason
I'm curious if that.
Chase
Yes.
Zach
The Hebrew version, it's a little different when you talk. Yeah. Because we're talking. He was talking about the Greek, but. But the Hebrew is a more. I mean, that's literally. That is an intimate knowledge.
Chase
Well, I just. When Jason was talking about that, I was thinking about. And you mentioned marriage, it made me think about that idea of fellowship with another person at such a level. Obviously, the. In the context, Genesis 4 produced a child. So, you know, some of that was the physical side of it. But it was more than that. It's. It's like any relationship, it's. With a husband and wife is physical, spiritual, emotional, intellectual. It's all of it rolled into one.
Zach
It's a real connection. It's the church. Many would argue, like pre Constantine, there's a. There's a phrase called parakoresis, which is essentially that the idea that the church just kind of knew who the church was. It was super organic and kind of like it fills with a family. Like, how do you know who's a member of your church? And the early church, they knew because they were a member of the church. It's like, how do you know your wife is your wife? How do you know who your wife is? Because she's my wife. And it was like that spirit that was just in the relationship. And I think where this connects to this temple conversation is that this is what I talked about on Sunday is that if you think about the temple, and it is super important to think about it first as the Garden of Eden, that was the original temple. I think you told me, Chase, that he held up the Gregory Bill book. Yeah.
Jason
Which I. I've read. And it. It is. What's the name of the book?
Zach
I think it's called the Church and the Mission of God. I can't remember the name. I sent you a copy of it. But then there's a bigger. There's a bigger book that he wrote, too. It's. I just know by colors, it's gray. But he held up the green book.
Jason
But.
Zach
But that's the book that goes through kind of the connection of the Garden of Eden, or one of the things that Bill does is connect the Garden of Eden to the tabernacle. And there's all kind of imagery like the lampstands and the pomegranates. I mean, there's a whole, like, all the. It was built to look like the garden. So if you go back to the garden, then you think, well, what's the. Why does it matter if it's a. If it's a garden or what? Why does that matter? It matters because when you understand the temple as the garden, then you end up with, well, what is my role in that temple as a believer in Jesus? And if I'm in Christ, then my role is the role that he gave them in the Garden of Eden, which was to expand it. That's the Genesis 1:28 passage. To exercise dominion over the creation, to take the Garden of Eden, the borders of the garden, and to continue to expand that out. And so that. That's all always the goal. So the. When. When I got to Hebrews and there's this warning passage that's right in the center of this conversation about this guy named Melchizedek. You got think what. What. Like, what is going on here? And the, The. The point that I think the Hebrew writer, he's laying a foundation for a new priestly order. And his point is that if, if the old Levitical priesthood, if that was good enough for you guys to be made perfect, then why in the world would the psalmist have said that there is going to be another priest established in the order of Melchizedek? So he, he kind of interrupts that thought. Well, we think what, what was so significant about Melchizedek? There were several things that were, that were significant about him. One is that he, the Bible says that he was a king of Salem. Well, is he a king or is he a priest?
Chase
But the Bible says king of Salem was geographically, that was Jerusalem. It's really interesting.
Zach
It's very interesting. A lot of the, I think there's like a historical tradition that teaches that he may have been like a son of Noah. Jason
but you said the one of the functions of the garden was for them to expand it which Is true. He said, multiply fill the earth. That they were to take that model. God present expanded. But there were two other aspects which he brought up in the sermon, which is when Genesis 2:15, the Lord God took the man and put him in the garden to work it and take care of it. So you realize. English Translation so when you kind of look at what that means, Adam was placed in the garden not for idleness, just to. Oh, kind of what we think about this concept of in the afterlife going to heaven and floating around on a cloud or whatever.
Chase
It's a permanent sandals.
Jason
So dress it, cultivate it. So he worked, but it was a different kind of work. It was not a laboring.
Zach
And to protect it.
Jason
Well, and that was the other one. And to guard and protect. Which kind of makes you think we didn't do his job. Because the evil one's presence there, well, that's what you're supposed to guard from.
Zach
We know he didn't guard because if you go back and read the historical account, when Satan enters the scene, he goes after Eve and he says, did God say. And then he misquotes what God actually said. Well, the truth is, is that Eve would not. She wasn't there when God said, was just Adam. Go back and read the text. Adam was the only one that was there. And so Adam. So you think, well, you know, Adam was, you know, he just got tricked by Eve. No, that's not what happened. Adam was the one that God gave the instruction. Adam was the one that God said, you can eat of any tree in the garden except for this one. Don't eat of this or you will surely die. So what should have happened in that, in that setting, had he been acting as a priest, he would have. He would have. When Satan says this to his wife, Eve, Adam would have said, hold on, Eve, I got this. And he would have looked at Satan and he would said, I was there. That's not what he said. This is what he said, get away from me, you liar. But he didn't do that. He abdicated his responsibility to lead his wife and we don't know why. I don't know the full story of why he never spoke up and said and told them. That's not what happened. But he was the one that had the original conversation.
Chase
Well, he forgot, Jace, in your original story story from the sermon, from the original scientist in the three acre building, they forgot to protect it from the roaches and the ants.
Jason
Well, because they wanted everything to live and have a life. It's like the Same concept of these people. I'm going to go live with the bears. Well, why can't we just all get along? Like, this is the point. And you look up and the guy's been eaten by the bears. And you're like, wait a minute, someone has. There's an order. When you read God's creation story, you're like, here's the order here. You rule. And that was the other thing I was going to bring up. You rule over the animal world. And so there was multiple responsibilities. The power of all that is when you fast forward, Paul is writing to a group of people who have claimed Christ, but they're not living. They're allowing these outside evil practices and forms of idolatry into the very temple of God. Which, what was the problem with the tabernacle and the temple? Same thing. The nation was allowing evil idolatrous notions to come in. Which is why, which is to give
Zach
up your, it's to give up your priestly duty. That's why I was going to make the connection with Melchizedek is that, that it's not just a connection for Christ, it's also a connection for us. And here's how. Because what you just said about the role of the priest, you have to think about the original priest before the priesthood was corrupted, because the priesthood got corrupted by the fall. The original priesthood was Adam, right? He's the OG priest. And his role, based on what you just said, you said rule and reign. I mean, well, hold on. Is he a priest or is he a king? And the answer is yes, the original priest was a priest and a king. And then corruption comes in, the priesthood gets corrupted and, and when God institutes the, the nation of Israel there. Did you realize that there has never been one person from the tribe of Levi to ever serve as king of Israel? Not one, not one priest ever served as king of Israel. And so Melchizedek, what made him so interesting is that now he predates Israel because Abraham actually tied to him. And so he predates Israel. He actually kind of like, he is the one that Abraham came. The father of the faith came to him and said, I'm going to tithe to you. And one of the things is that he wasn't, he didn't have like a, like a, or family of origin. But the, but the, the main point I want to make is that he was a king of Salem and he was the priest of God, of God Most High. So when you, when we get to he. The Hebrew writers making this point that this is who Jesus is. But the reason why you had the warning inside of this context of who Jesus is in a new priestly order. The reason why the Hebrew writers is saying, I want, I got to tell you about this, but you're not mature enough yet because you're still on the, on the, the milk. I want to tell you about the solid food, the word of righteousness, and people who are stuck on milk, they're unskilled with the teaching about righteousness. What he's talking about there is he's actually talking about our priestly duty. And the reason why we know this, because when you turn over to listen to how Peter says it, Peter says that but you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession. So when you think about this, you think, what is. How am I a royal priest? Am I. Am I king or am I a priest? You got to pick one. You can't be both. But we are both. If you're in Christ, you're both, because that's the new priestly order that was instituted. And what's interesting about this is this is what was prophesied in Exodus chapter 19. He says, I'm going to make you, I'm going to turn you into a kingdom of priests. I mean, that's what he told Israel. Well, he did turn them into a kingdom of priests. It's just called the Kingdom of God now, and we're now a part of it. So when you get to Revelation, listen to these two, two verses in Revelation 1 and Revelation 5, and it directly connects to what Jace said. The role of the priest was. This is in Revelation 1, verse 5, to him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood, there's the atonement, and made us a kingdom of priests. To his God and Father and to him be glory and dominion forever and ever. And then if you skip just a few chapters down, you see this, that this is in Revelation chapter 5 when he says in verse 10, you have made them a kingdom of priests to our God and they shall reign on the earth. I mean, that's the calling and that's actually what we're all called to do. And this is directly connected to the temple because as Peter says in First Peter 2, before I read that part about being a royal priesthood, he says that we're growing into this temple together. Where does the priest serve in the temple? So the reason why the temple matters is because that's where you work at. That's what we're actually cultivating that's where we're exercising dominion.
Jason
That's where Three Dog Night missed it. He'd never been to heaven, but it's been here.
Chase
It's here.

Chase
That's why you rack. So here. Zach, here's another text to buttress what you just said. Zechariah 6:12 Here is the man. This is from God to Zachariah. Here is the man whose name is the branch Capital Bible and he will branch out from this place and build the temple of the Lord. It is he who will build the temple of the Lord. He will be clothed with majesty and will sit and rule on his throne. There's your king. And he will be a priest on his throne. And there will be harmony between the two.
Jason
There'll be what?
Chase
Harmony.
Jason
You're not going to believe this. I want to read these other two passages in Corinthians because we're doing this off the top of our head. So the other passage in that 1st Corinthians 3 by the temple. Well then in 1st Corinthians 6. Now this is the one people are most familiar with. In verse 18, it says, Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a man commits are outside his body. But he who sins sexually sins against his own body. Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you've received from God. You are not your own. You are bought at a price. Well, there's the atonement.
Chase
Yeah.
Jason
Therefore honor God with your body, which there's the attunement. Yeah, but so then you get to 2nd Corinthians 6, and in verse 14 it says, do not be yoked with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? And here we go back to this Guarding. What God? Where his dwelling is guarding and protecting as you're working, he says. Or what fellowship can light have with darkness? Well, that's what we're talking about in First John. And look what the next verse says. What harmony is there between Christ and whoever this demonic being is? Belial. Belayer. Belayer. That the name says it pretty much. It's Bilal or Belayer.
Chase
Yeah.
Jason
What does a believer have in common with an unbeliever? What agreement is there between God? I mean, between the temple of God and idols? There's a reason that the last verse in first John, where we're, where we're going, says, keep yourselves from idols.
Chase
That's right.
Jason
So having said all that, when you go to Hebrews 10, you're like, well, how did this happen? How did we become the temple of God? And I just wanted to read this before, before I read Hebrews 10. So I asked the question to get an AIO overview. What did the garden? The similarities of the temple or tabernacle and the garden. And there's a long list. Both are located on a sacred mountain of God and they both face east, presence of God. Both serve as a primary meeting place between God and humanity. The garden featured the tree of life. The temple featured a menorah, the golden lampstand pattern after an almond tree. Both include imagery of rivers. Remember that we hadn't talked about that. The rivers were flowing out up from the garden. And why? Because to give life. Well, fast forward that to what it means to us. Remember when Jesus said in John 7, you'll have that holy spirit and it'll be living water. It's, it's not just that you have it and it's all about, oh, he's going to clean you up and wash you. Which it does say, it uses the word wash. You were washed first Corinthians 6, you were made holy. But it's also flowing out.
Chase
It washes to cleanse, to declare that
Jason
there is a God and you're welcome to be a part of it. You have a purpose. So all these similarities are there. They both had a guarded entrance, cherubim guarded the way. They both reflect an image, the functional role. Both were intended as places for humanity to work and keep or guard. Both feature a three part structure of increasing holiness. Eden, land, garden versus courtyard, holy place, holy of holies. So I thought that was fascinating. But then when you get to Hebrews 10, so then you see the temporary. Like take the tabernacle and I won't read the whole thing. But those temporary sacrifices and all that system where God was dwelling, it was all temporary. But Jesus, when he came, he made it eternal, his temple. And you see that in verse. Let's see. I want to read verse 19. Therefore, brother, since we have confidence to enter the most holy place by the blood of Jesus, so he's taken the truth, old temple reference and said and says verse 20 by a new and Living way open for us through the curtain that is his body. So his body represents the curtain of the temple to enter the most holy place. And since we have a great priest over there, it is again the house of God. Jesus is our high priest. Look at this. Let us draw near to God because when we get to the end of first John, all of a sudden he starts talking about prayer. Because we've been given access to God, God dwelling among us, and we shouldn't take that for granted.
Chase
This also includes that word confidence we kept using.
Jason
So he had two really good points. He said where people miss it on what these passages are saying is, number one, they think God's way out there somewhere far off. You read the Bible and you're like, oh, he's not far, he's near. He's in you. He's with you, working through you, in you. And then it's like, come near. All these are the passages that are in here over and over. His other point was kind of funny and he's like, the other point we miss is we think that by some experience that that's the Holy Spirit. And he talked about, he's like, now I love big groups and you know, and these life altering group settings. He's like, it's not the Holy Spirit, it's dopamine from your brain. You know, it turns into a carny. And he's like, we turn into tourists instead of priests. That was the really good line.
Zach
I think that's good because I think what happens in the Hebrew writer hits on this hard is the whole point is he's trying to bring the believer into real confidence. The problem is that if you don't understand what you're called into as a priesthood or God's actually present with you, then you reduce the atonement to simply, and I'm not saying it's not this, but to simply and only a payment of a debt. And you're missing, if that's where it ends with you. You're never going to have real confidence because it's not relational.
Jason
That's why I brought up the atonement. Look, we're out of time, so let me finish this verse. In verse 22, it says, Let us draw near to God with sincere heart and full assurance of faith. Having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water, which goes back to that. Your body is the temple. And I think I would bring up a third problem. I think people think this is all spiritual. But I'VE just read about three verses on us having God's presence in us. He makes very clear. And Paul does it in 1st Thessalonians 5:23 when he says, may your whole body, spirit and soul be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus.
Chase
That's all of you.
Jason
Yeah, it's all of you. For some reason we read this oh, he cleansed our hearts, but he also washed our bodies. It made me think of John 13, where he washed their feet. He's like, you're already clean, but your feet are dirty. I'm washing your feet. I mean, God is concerned. That's how intimate he wants this thing to be. Body, soul and spirit. And us being attuned to him. That's what it means to be the temple of God. And that happens 24 7.
Chase
