V2 i. They knew it was because of Jesus ii. Jesus knew it – John 15:18-21; John 17:14 iii. The Disciples are learning it, firsthand. iv. Opposition means you are getting it right! 2. Jesus is Your Answer to GO Opposition – v8-12 a. He is your Spirit-filled answer – remember 1:8 b. He is your Death, Burial, and Resurrection answer – v10 c. He is the Cornerstone of Your Faith answer – v11 d. He is your Exclusive Way to Life Everlasting Answer! – v12 e. Jesus is Your Answer to Opposition! 3. Jesus is Your Identity in GO Opposition – v13 a. This will be obvious b. There will be no other explanation possible 4. Jesus is the Power that overcomes GO Opposition – v14-16 a. Notice who also spent the night in jail b. Think of his accelerated discipleship! 5. GO Opposition has only 1 chance – v17-18 6. Your response to GO opposition should be pre-determined – v19-20 a. No argument b. We’ll listen to God c. We must keep on witnessing d. We accept your consequences i. Preview – 5:40-41 ii. There is a price to be paid iii. You’ll never regret paying it! iv. “You must judge” – they will be accountable for their actions 7. GO Opposition can’t stop God’s work! V21-22 a. God will be praised among the nations! b. Matthew 24:14; Revelation 7:9 c. The Enemy has been trying to stop it for 2,000 yrs; really, all the way back to Genesis 3. d. How will you respond? 8. Time together ii. I wonder if they linger like you do? c. Breaking of Bread i. Only used one other place in the NT, seems to refer to the practice of communion, not just eating a meal. d. The Prayers – can you image what that sounded like? 2. Awed by God a. Aware of what He was doing i. Are you? ii. Recent examples… b. Through the apostles… c. In their midst… 3. United by their Beliefs 4. Radical Generous in meeting one another’s Needs - Ministry 5. Engaged fully in Daily Corporate Worship 6. And in Daily Hospitality 7. Praising God 8. Community Favor 9. Pentecost was the day to celebrate the next harvest – the wheat is ready to be brought in! The Feast of Weeks from Leviticus 23:15-16.Jesus had told them the Promise would bring the Power, ‘Not many days from now’ as He ascended into heaven – 40 days after Firstfruits. And on Day 50 – The GO Process of building the church begins in dramatic fashion – Remember Matthew 16 – I will build my church! Let’s examine the GO Process:1. The Spirit fills prepared hearts – v 1-4 2. The Spirit draws a curious crowd – v5-13 3. The Gospel is preached by Convinced Witnesses – v14-15 4. Dots are connected from the OT to right then – v16-21 a. Remember, this is a Jewish audience! 5. Jesus is proclaimed as Lord & Savior – v22-36 6. Hearts are gripped by conviction of sin – v37 a. The Spirit convicts – John 16:8-11 b. The Obvious question is asked i. What shall we do? ii. Evangelism is explaining the Gospel and encouraging a response! 7. Those God called are led to repent & be saved – v38-40 8. New Believers are baptized to identify with Christ – v41 9. The church is formed by: a. The preaching of the Gospel b. The reaching of the Lost c. Now, the Making of Disciples begins d. I felt this accountability to those supporting me iii. Felicia and I receive regular communications from missionaries that we support iv. Paul knows there are 2 things to communicate – How are they doing?; What are they doing? e. Imagine trying to keep up with Paul! i. Acts 13-28 is the exhausting narrative detail of 3 impactful mission trips covering 2 continents & a misguided, attemptedvoyage to deliver him to Rome as a prisoner. 1. These letters and his envoys are incredibly important to let his churches know how he is doing. 2. Everyone needs a Tychicus – v21-22 a. Beloved Brother, Faithful minister b. A Sent one – Trusted i. Imagine you just wrote what you know is a Spirit-driven letter ii. Who are you handing this letter to for delivery? – Colossians 4:7-8 c. Fellow slave – shared perspective d. Purposeful e. His job - Update and encourage f. We all need that – Hebrews 10:24-25 g. Who’s your Tychicus? h. To whom are you being that encourager/updater?3. Concluding Words are Important – v23-24 a. Paul shares the 4 gifts you need to live the Christian life… i. Hint – Jesus is the source of all 4! ii. – as we bring to a close our 4-month study of this wonderful letter – as we conclude our ‘Celebration of the Church: Who we are in Christ’, the 4 gifts we need to carry forward from here are: iii. PEACE – 7 times - 2:14; 4:3 iv. Love – 15 times - so critical to ‘walk in Love’ – 2:4, 3:17; 4:16; 5:2 1. So poignant because we know what happens2. 30 yrs later – Revelation 2:1-5 – “We leak!” v. Why does it matter that you walk in love; in light; in His Wisdom in all of your relationships – Well it matters because… 1. WAR is raging all around us – v11-12 a. A cosmic battle b. A spiritual battle – 2 Corinthians 11:3-5 c. A battle between Light and Darkness d. Schemes – The Father of Lies – John 8:44 to John 10:10 2. Our Call is to Stand Firm – v11, 13, 14 a. Not to win arguments b. Not to pick fights c. To Stand in Christ d. Not to falter e. Not to Run – in either direction f. Not to Waver g. But to Stand – Confidently, Boldly, Faithfully 3. We need His Strength to Stand – v 10 a. Stand Still and see the Salvation of the Lord – Exodus 14:13-14 4. We need His Armor to Stand – v11, 13, 14 a. TRUTH – like a Belt - John 17:17 – Your Word is Truth i. The WORD sets us apart b. Righteousness – like a breastplate – guarding our vital organs i. Romans 3:9-18, 19-24 ii. Matthew 5:20 iii. 2 Corinthians 5:21; Genesis 15:6 c. Gospel Readiness – Of Peace – Shoes – Anchor d. Faith – like a Shield i. 2:8-9 ii. Belief extinguishes Lies e. Salvation – like a helmet i. Devil’s favorite whisper ii. John 10:27-30 f. The WORD – like a sword i. 2 Timothy 3:16-17 ii. Offensive iii. Know the Word iv. Quote the Word 5. We Stand in PrayerPrayer is the Battle – ‘Prayer isn’t our last line of defense. It’s our first line of offense.’ – Pastor Craig Groeschel a. Pray i. All the time ii. In the Spirit iii.
