We grow: 1. From the equipping of our Leaders – v11 a. They are given asgifts to the church i. Apostles - Plant ii. Prophets - Preach iii. Evangelists - Share iv. Shepherd/Teachers – Care/Prayer b. They equip us for ministry i. Follow their lead ii. Hebrews 13:7, 17 iii. I don’t think there is a more joyful pastor than me. really don’t. iv. That is because of God, who placed me here; and because of you – I know I am here as your shepherd – God has made that very clear to me; and your response to my leadership is so encouraging. Thank you! 2. By ministering to one another – v12 a. Think how we do that: i. Teachers teach ii. Servants serve iii. Singers sing iv. Players play v. Counters count vi. Bakers bake vii. Ushers ush viii. Deacons deac… ix. Encouragers encourage x. Witnesses share xi. Friends are friendly…3. Until we are completely like Jesus – v13 a. Our goal isprogress, not perfection b. In unity c. In knowledge – 1:18-20; 3:18-19 d. To maturity –progress! Are you a more mature Christ-follower than you were 5 yrs ago; 2 years ago; 6 months ago? How are you measuring your progress? e. By following Him closely4. For our own protection – v14 a. There are dangers associated with not growing b. Immature c. Defenseless d. No stability e. No anchor f. No purpose g. No direction h. No Impact!5. By speaking the Truth in Love – v15 a. Truth, by itself leads to legalism, and judgmentalism b. Love, by itself leads to license to sin, love does not mean you can do whatever you want – love is accountable c. Jesus is the perfect balance of both –John 1:14, 17 i. Not 50/50; but, 100/100! d. This is intentional, not accidental – Hebrews 10:24-256. Wheneach part of the body functions properly – v16 a. You are necessary! b. Your contribution matters – large or small – 1 Corinthians 12:18-27 c. Whole body, every joint, each part, the body7. Together, in Love! a. 4:2 – bearing with one another in Love – our Umbrella b. 1 Corinthians 12:27- – the still more excellent way! c. 1 Corinthians 13:1-13Friends, this is who we are and how we are to operate – The body of Christ, equipped to grow, all contributing as He fits us together and gifts us to serve one another in Love.Let’s keep on growing, together! Amen! Are you in on this? Do you have a relationship with Christ? - ? ? - You can’t mature in Christ, until you are in Christ!Are you a part of a church family? When you talk about something that happens at church, or a decision that is made, do you say, ‘we’ did that; or, ‘they’ did that. Our language gives away what we really think. Jan 28, 202500:33:06Tap to summarizeEpisode 124 - Celebrating Our Unity Who We Are In Jesus - A Study In Ephesians Ephesians 4:1-10 As this great New Testament letter turns from the doctrinal to the practical…Let’s read Ephesians 4:1-10. After 3 chapters of learning who we are as the loved, called, and chosen children of God’s family… After 3 chapters of seeing all we have in Christ – His Presence, Power, Spirit, and Love in abundance. Now, therefore – Paul implores the church at Ephesus to live out their faith – to put it all into practice – to, as he says, walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called – you, as in, all of you, corporately, not as individuals, but as the collective Body of Christ, locally, You, walk out your calling in a worthy manner. What does that look like? As a local church, display: 1. Humility – similar to his words to the Philippian church in 2:1-4 2. Gentleness 3. With Patience 4. Bearing with one another in Love (getting along; Love is overarching) 5. Eager to maintain the Unity of the Spirit a. Unity is focused on what we have in common; not our differences b. Instead of sowing discord – Proverbs 6:16-19 6. In the Bond (uniting principle / ligament) of Peace – Matthew 5:9 – Blessed are the Peacemakers! What is this Unity? What does it entail? How do we understand unity? Unity majors on the majors: 1. One Body – The fellowship of Believers – a local congregation 2. One Spirit – The Holy Spirit who activates our fellowship through saving us and indwelling us 3. One Hope – The Glorious Future He promises us – Our abundant life – Now & Forever 4. One Lord – Christ Jesus, to whom we all belong – The Head of the church! Acts 4:12 5. One Faith – Our singular commitment to Christ – Ephesians 2:8-9 6. One Baptism – The outward sign of our salvation and our alignment with His church 7. Finally, One God – Our Heavenly Father, over all With this in common, there is nothing that should divide us. There is much room for gentle, agreeable disagreement, within a family that lives and loves under this umbrella. This word is for a plural body – a corporate ‘we’, if you will, but in verse 7 he begins to picture the diversity of our individual gifting within this united body: Verse 7 – But grace was given to each one of us according to the measure of Christ’s gift. We’ll see the incredible impact of how these individual gifts beautifully fit us together, as we continue next week in verses 11-16. The impact can be, and should be astounding – for us, and to the watching world around us! Let’s close with verses 8-10 These verses speak of the remarkable activity of the Lord Jesus who came from Heaven to Earth, lived, died, rose, and ascended back to Heaven to rule and reign over his universe. 1. Heaven to Earth – Incarnation 2. Life on Earth to the underworld after his death 3. Simply, his life and burial Regardless, it means He has taken the initiative to come to us, conquering sin and death and making it possible for us to be His, with all the incredible attributes as a child of God, and as a Body of Christ! This preeminent one, the true Master of the Universe, is the one who chooses to give gifts to His children. He is the One we worship. Do you know Him? Are you serving Him? Glorifying God, not us! b. Celebrating what He has done through us. c. This should become clear through the message 2. How do we understand Generosity like this? 3. Generosity is motivated by examples of devotion – 1 Chronicles 29:1-5 4. Generosity follows an invitation to a Vision far beyond ourselves – v5 a. Not coercion b. Not need c. Willingness is implied AND stated d. The invitation – Give yourself first to the Lord; He’ll show you what to give e. This is consistent with Paul’s reporting on generosity in extreme poverty in the NT – 2 Corinthians 8:1-5 5. Spiritual Leaders give first – v6-8 a. Freely b. Clearly c. Specifically 6. Generosity excites Worship – v9-13 a. Willingly b. Wholly c. Freely 7. Worship excites Generosity – v14-16 a. It’s easy to give when you recognize, ‘It’s all His’ b. This means you can’t out give God! He’s already given you everything you have. c. This reality unties the purse strings like none other 8. Generosity is fueled by a devoted heart – v17-18 a. A heart of integrity before the Lord b. Will freely give all it can c. To the One who gave His all for us. d. 2 Corinthians 5:21 9. Generosity produces Joy – v9, v22 a. O Friends, don’t miss the Joy of Generosity b. Let me ask a concluding question - Are we joyful because we are so generous; or, are we generous because we are so joyful? c. The answer is, appropriately, “I can’t tell!” Which, based on our Scriptures this morning – is exactly as it should be. d. These Israelites (OT), or the Macedonians in the NT, or the Midwayians in 2025 all live the same truth expressed in 1 Chronicles 29:9 and 2 Corinthians 8:5 and in your active, joyful giving over many years… e. REAL QUICK SIDE NOTE: - How often should we pray? The Bible tells us to pray A LOT! o Philippians 4:6 o 1 Thessalonians 5:17 - Prayer is a two way conversation … talk and LISTEN! o Proverbs 3:5-6 WHAT WE PRAY FOR: Strengthened by the POWER of His Spirit – 3:14-17a - God IN us = unique o 10,000 distinct world religions o 12 major religions: Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Sikhism, Confucianism, Jainism, Shinto, Taoism, Baha'i, and Zoroastrianism - We pray for Power … God doesn’t send us Power, HE IS THE POWER inside of us. - FAITH – Hebrews 11:6 o Faith = Knowledge + Action Strengthened by the LOVE of Christ – 3:17b-19a - KNOW His Love – EXPERIENCE His Love o Sacrifice FOR us o Forgiveness TO us o Love THROUGH us - Rooted & Grounded o Romans 12 – We KNOW the Love of Jesus so that we can SHOW the Love of Jesus Strengthened by the KNOWLEDGE of God – 3:19b - KNOW God -> LOVE God -> TRUST God -> OBEY God o How God does this … FULL of God – Colossians 1 - Jesus = Our Example - “FULL of God” – Colossians 2:9 - Life = Knowing God o John 10:10 o John 17:3 WHO WE PRAY TO: Prayed to God, Who is able to do exceedingly more than we ask or imagine … - 3:20a - He Promises to give us the true desires of our hearts – Psalm 37:4 - Do you TRUST Him? DREAM (PRAY) BIG … EXPECT BIGGER! HOW HE RESPONDS: … according to His Power at work WITHIN US. - 3:20b - He works His Will IN & THROUGH us. - Matthew 7:7 - POWER … to step out in Faith - LOVE … to show to others - KNOWLEDGE … to walk with Him Does your Calling, your Mission, your Purpose require HIS STRENGTH? - Does the life you are living require God’s Power … or are you having a go at it on your own? - Does what you set out to accomplish each day require His Power? Does who you set out to be each day require His Love? Does how you see & interpret the world around you require a growing Knowledge of Him? - If not … this is my prayer for you! Hope, Joy, Peace, are in the proclamations and prophecies; but where is love? I woke up asking this question on Monday which caused me to do a search of the gospels to find out when is the first time the word LOVE shows up in each gospel – especially Matthew, Luke, and John as they are the writers who share bits of the Christmas story. But, in Matthew’s Gospel, ‘Love’ doesn’t appear until chapter 5 – The Sermon on the Mount – ‘You have heard it said, ‘Love your neighbor, and hate your enemies’; And in Luke it is not until chapter 6 – in Adult Jesus’ parallel sermon on the plain – Love your enemies; So, what about John’s Gospel – John begins his gospel with the Deity of Christ – John 1:1, 14; but when is love first mentioned in his Gospel – Well, it is also where we find the answer to the question – ‘Where is Love in the Christmas story?’ – Let’s look clearly at it in an all too familiar place – John 3:16 – For God so loved – It is God’s love that brings Jesus as our gift – and as John has already made clear Jesus is God; therefore, friends – Where is Love in the Christmas story? He is in the manger! Amen! This extraordinary Good News that we celebrate at Christmas and, indeed, every day is … 1. You are loved by God! a. Christmas proves it! John 3:16 b. The pronouncement – Good news of Great Joy – Luke 2:10-14 c. Jesus is a gift of love; given to save us – Luke 2:11; John 3:16 2. His Love empowers our Love! a. 1 John 4:7-8 b. His initiative 3. His Love brings LIFE! a. 1 John 4:9 b. His incarnation 4. His Love pays for our sin a. 1 John 4:10 b. Satisfying the wrath of a Holy, Perfect God c. Pardon – set free, but at what cost? For Justice to be satisfied the debt must be paid. 5. Our Love shows His Love a. 4:11-16 b. To other believers c. To a watching world 6. His Love gives us Confident Hope a. V17-19 b. For the future Judgment c. For the present life up to and including death 7. His Love holds us accountable a. V20-21 b. You get this because the Midway Family is such a loving church! 8. Advent Love - His Love is the Reason for It All a. God loves you! Personally, Individually, Specifically, and Lavishly b. May you both experience and share His Perfect Love this Christmas! We medicate because of the lack of it 3. Peace is Conditional a. It requires something of us b. V14 – reserved for those with whom God is pleased This leads us to some basic questions: 1. With whom is God pleased? i. Hebrews 11:6 2. What is Faith – Hebrews 11:1-2 ii. So, we must believe (Trust) that He is – present tense – NOW 1. Perfectly Holy/Just – His standard is Perfection 2. Perfectly Loving – His essence is Love 3. Perfectly Good – His actions are Good iii. And that He rewards those who seek Him 3. What is His Reward? iv. Life – described in the Written Word – Psalm 119 v. Embodied in the Living WORD – John 10:10 vi. Delivered by His Resurrection Power – John 20:19-21 vii. Delivered regardless of circumstance - John 16:33 4. How does this Peace work? a. Philippians 4:6-7 – comes through trusting God in a personal relationship of honesty b. Philippians 4:8-9 – draws you deeper into the Relationship with the very God of Peace c. The elusive, but readily available, Peace can be yours right now 5. Do you have Advent Peace? 6. Do you want it? a. Isaiah 26:3-4 b. Good news of Great Joy – You can have Peace, but much more importantly, you can know the very God of Peace, Himself! Joy is Contagious! a. The announcement itself sparks Joy among the Angelic host i. Think how long they’ve waited to tell this Good News! b. Because Joy is an outward expression of an inward awareness of God’s Presence and God’s Activity c. His Spirit in you recognizes Spirit-produced Joy in others 3. Joy flows from Promises fulfilled a. This Good News is Extraordinary; but not unexpected! b. God has become a man! c. Our Salvation has been initiated 4. You can experience this Joy, but it requires movement a. God invites us to experience Jesus b. It requires Faith – v15-20 c. V12 – Go see for yourself! d. V15 – Let’s go! e. V16 – They went with Haste! f. V17 – They shared what they knew g. V20 – Glorifying and Praising God – sounds like they are full of ….? h. Joy-filled for all they had heard and seen! i. They’ve seen the Savior! i. That’s Joy! ii. Jesus overwhelms us with Joy 1. The Joy of Forgiveness 2. Salvation 3. Cleansing 4. Newness 5. Presence 6. Peace 7. Wonder 8. Awe… 5. There is one more Special Joy that we must recognize a. The Joy of seeing another’s salvation b. Dec 9, 202400:27:43Tap to summarize2024 Christmas Advent Realities Advent Hope Luke 2:25-35 Advent Hope literally means Arrival Expected. Think of the airport and all of the big screens they have in the terminals. Half of them are listing Departures and have of them show all of the Arrivals coming in. The screen scrolls through the long list of where planes are coming from and critically important – when they are expected to arrive. The Jews had been given the first piece of the puzzle, the sure and certain Hope that The Messiah will come from Heaven – Immanuel, God with us, is on the way. However, the second column of the Arrival Screen was completely blank – when is He due? When do we expect His arrival? We want to be ready! But, that was left unsaid and unknown – Yes, He is coming – many prophets had made that clear, all the way back to the Garden of Eden, in fact, - and yet, year upon year; century by century; generation to generation…not yet. It’s now been over 700 yrs since Isaiah’s clear prophecies – look at 42:5-7 and 49:6 – O, He is coming! The Promise has been many and Many carried the Hope – the confident expectation that it could be in their lifetime – Hope had produced Awareness – a looking and a longing… 1. Expectation creates Anticipation a. Luke 2:25-26 b. Can you imagine living in that anticipation and knowing you are growing older, weaker…and, yet – might it be today… c. He is ready to meet the Messiah and he lives with this incredible anticipation, because He knows the promise is true. And that is why – when the Anticipation has been fulfilled… 2. Anticipation births Proclamation a. 27-32 b. The Promise has been kept; and, the world needs to know! c. We have this great story to tell this Christmas Season d. Jesus is the reason for the season! i. But, what was the reason for Jesus? 3. Proclamation focuses on Revelation a. The Word of God is His revealed Promise given to us. We hope in Him, but we know to do so from His Word, which we know to be True. b. V32 relates back to the promises of Isaiah which had fueled his Hope c. But he also understood the main focus of the revelation – as he makes clear in verse 30 4. Revelation tells of Salvation – v30 a. And that must be the focus of our story – Yes, a baby is born, but to what end – What is the reason for Jesus – our Salvation – the wonder of Christmas is simply, yet powerfully related in John 3:16-17. b. We need Salvation and the Promise of our Salvation has come. And this promise is for everyone! WHOSOEVER! c. With that understanding that this miraculous, promised Child has come to save us, comes a harsh conclusion that Simeon came to, as he turned to face the astounded new parents. 5. Salvation means Realization – v33-35 a. This baby was born to die b. He would be the dividing line, not just of History; but of human hearts c. He is the Lamb of God who will take away our sins. The cost of our salvation is evident – the promise and Hope made that clear. The Word has become flesh, but it is a somber Joy – because this Promise can only be fulfilled by the shedding of His innocent blood for the sins of all mankind – yours, and mine. This Promise will bring pain, but that’s not the end of the story – beyond the pain, Glory awaits – for the resurrected Savior, and all those who believe and commit themselves to Him. It will all be worth it. 6. And so, in Summary: a. Promises Made – Know them! b. Promises Kept – Experience them! c. Promises Shared – Tell them! 7. To steward the mystery ii. To bring to Light the Plan 1. Turn on the light – John 1:4-14 iii. To stay Humble as God uses you 1. Not me, but God! I am just His messenger 2. It is always about the Message, not the messenger 3. The messenger is flawed; the message is Pure! 3. The Mission Explained – v10-13 a. The Church is positioned as God’s conduit of Wisdom to the world b. The Church’s Power comes from Christ c. The Church’s Purpose is in Christ i. Through Faith ii. With Boldness iii. By Access – Hebrews 4:14-16 iv. Worth the Cost – the Bookends of v1 1 and 13 1. Prisoner of Christ, on your behalf 2. Suffering for you – Your Glory – you’re worth it! This was a misapplication of God’s Plan to unite the peoples of the world i. Genesis 11 – At the tower of Babel - God scatters people and confuses languages because of disobedience ii. In Genesis 12 - He immediately begins the reconciliation process by His Grace d. God chose Abram and made his physical descendants, through Isaac, his chosen and special people e. They had 2 assignments: i. Live Holy Lives ii. Bear witness to the rest of the World f. The Jews quickly forgot their purpose and focused on the words special and chosen – misapplying them and forgetting their purpose – As in – We’re holy; you aren’t – We’re Special; You’re not – spiraling down into sin and unholiness – desiring to be like the world, instead of reaching the world with God’s love and purpose as His special envoys. i. The result was 2 hopeless groups! 1. The Jews – disobedient and defiant toward their Holy God 2. The Gentiles – living apart from God, with no one to point them to God – making life up on their own. g. But, Jesus changes everything! i. HE came to realign the Jews back to God’s plan and open the door for the Gentiles to hear and receive the Gospel – bringing them together in one body – The Church. ii. He now, and for the last 2,000 years, empowers the Church to accomplish the mission, the purpose of drawing people together in Christ. 2. God’s Peace is only possible through the Cross – v13-18 a. By the Blood – The Sacrificial Lamb of Offering b. In His Flesh – Our Perfect Substitute to satisfy God’s Wrath c. Through the Cross – Reconciling us to God – 16-18 d. No other way – No one else died for you, like that! i. As the fulfillment of God’s Plan to reconcile the world to Himself 1. 2 Corinthians 5:17-21 ii. Regardless of Distance Peace is Available 1. Romans 5:1-5 3. God’s Peace was always God’s Plan a. Genesis 12:1-3 b. Isaiah 49:6 c. Luke 2:29-33 d. Acts 10:44-48 e. Revelation 7:9-12 4. The Church unites Growing Believers together in Peace! V19-22 a. Fellow Citizens with b. Members of God’s household c. Build on Christ – v20-22 i. Our foundation is the written Word of God ii. With the Living Word of God as the Cornerstone 1. Aligned precisely with God in Holiness 2. Positioned perfectly in His Spiritual Building a. As His Growing Temple b. As His Spirit’s Home i. Johnny’s testimony 1. 5 weeks ago – I don’t get church 2.
