Welcome to a special series of the Healing and Human Potential podcast called How They Did It. So in this series, we're bringing real life stories of transformation so you can hear the lessons, the wisdom and the tools that helps them really step into living their dreams and you can apply them to your own life. Today's conversation is really for anybody that feels like they're meant for more, but they're not quite sure how to take the next steps to answer that call. And this specific story is around a woman who knew she wanted to be with her kids but also work and make a bigger impact. She's sharing how she did it to be able to do multiple six figures work when her kids are at home and really make a bigger impact in a way that feels in alignment with her values. She shares about the inner blocks that came up along the way, like perfectionism, how she was able to access and tune into her higher self to let that lead her business and how you can do the same. It's proof that as we do the work to shift internally, the external results reflect that. It's a good one and I hope it serves you. First off, Lindsay, I am so honored to have you. I wanted to have you on for a few different reasons. One is because you are one of the best coaches and facilitators that I know, as well as one of the most incredible moms that I know. And you do it so seamlessly together as best as possible for, you know, raising young kids and running a business. And I think that your story can serve so many people who relate to having a big calling in their heart, know that they're meant for more. But at one point you didn't know what that looked like and didn't know what the next steps were. Can you talk to us about what life looked like before you knew what you wanted to be doing and what that moment was when you realized, no, this is it for me.
B
Well, first of all, thank you for having me here. It's such an honor to be here and to share my story. I hope it can serve so many people. The before for me was I was coaching. I was coaching, but I was coaching inside of a nonprofit organization and I was doing, I was dabbling in having my own business on the side. I was doing a little bit of one to one coaching on the side, but I didn't have the type of business I really wanted. And I was a mom of two young children and the business that I wanted was I wanted to have a group program for women and I wanted to Have a business that allowed me to make an impact, earn a good income while also having spaciousness, to be the mom and the wife and the woman that I really wanted to be just outside of coaching, wanted that spaciousness. And that vision of facilitating a group program was really born where you and I met in 2006. I remember walking in a classroom with a sea of 276 students, you being one of them. One of the greatest blessings of my life meeting you there. And I remember sitting there and watching our beloved teachers in front of the sea of people. And I just was like, I heard this voice at that. That is what I want to do. I want to facilitate people in up leveling their consciousness and living from the truth of who they are. And everything inside of me wanted that. That dream was still very alive in my heart, but I wasn't living it. I wasn't living, I was dabbling, but I wasn't really living in it.
A
And I think that is the case for a lot of people. And I will talk about some of the inner blocks that come up. People hear the call and then they have fear that comes up. And I just want to normalize this. Like as soon as you clarify what the vision is and then you or you take steps towards it, all of the fears that have held you back come up. And this isn't bad, this normal, this is life coaching and apprenticing you to work through the fears so that you can step into what it is you want. And I just to name some of the common fears is people pleasing, is comparison, self doubt, unworthiness. These are some common fears that come up for people. A lot of people stop there. Some people push through, right? They will like do this masculine approach of like pushing through and having courage. And that's great. But there is a, there is another option which is to have the tools, the community, the mentorship or support to get out of your own way and still answer the call. And so what was holding you back at that time? Like why hadn't you really stepped into it? Even after graduating from a master's program? What were some of the things that were coming up for you?
B
Well, I come from a very long line of perfectionists. I grew up with a dad who was a perfectionist, his mom who was a perfectionist, her mom. Again, a long line of perfectionists. I had internalized at a very young age that I wasn't good enough. So self doubt, not feeling enough. And while I had done work around that, when it came to really stepping forward on this Vision, that core misunderstanding was paralyzing. It really held me back. And you know, a story that I like to tell is when I was a little girl, just so you can get a sense of this, of this. It was like when I was a little girl, one of my chores was to vacuum my room. And I would vacuum my room and then I would leave and I would come back later to find that my dad had re vacuumed it and he left this like perfect triangular pattern in the carpet. And bless him, bless my dad, doing the best he knew how to do. But repeated experiences like that with my dad, where I felt, where my perception was, that my way was wrong, that his way was right, these repeated experiences and also experiencing what I perceived as like criticism and judgment around the things that I did do, it instilled this misunderstanding that there was something wrong with me, that I wasn't good enough. And so that really did. It paralyzed me, it held me back and it had me again dabbling. So playing small and not really moving forward on what it is I really wanted.
A
So then dabbling was the safety strategy to avoid not feeling good enough. Because if you really went for it, then maybe you would find out that you weren't good enough or your results weren't good enough. And so what I love about what the work that I know you and I are both committed to now is using business as a personal development path so that it's not just healing for the sake of healing. It's like real healing as a change of behavior. How does that show up differently in your life as a result? And oftentimes, business is a big thing for people, so. Or answering the call of their heart, whatever that might be. It could be a relationship, it could be anything. And so when looking at the misunderstandings and misidentifications that come up along the way, it's like, oh, I'm afraid of putting myself out. There is one common one. And it's really the fear of judgment. And it's like, okay, but you're not putting yourself out there, you're putting your services out there. So disidentifying from what you do and who you are. And so talk to us a little bit to give context before we go into a little bit more of some of the outer shifts and inner shifts that helped you get to where you are. Give people a context of where you are now and really what supported you in shifting your into the business and life that you have.
B
So for me, the turning point for me and stepping into the business that I have now was really joining the program. And that what happened for me was I really learned to be with that part of myself that had bought into the misunderstanding that I wasn't good enough. I really learned how to be with that part with love and compassion and to accept that part so that she wasn't driving the ship of my life anymore, that my highest self was driving the ship of my life, and she was, like, in the passenger seat. So when I did that, I was really moving in my. I was able to create my business from what I would call my essence, from my highest self and not this part of me that was afraid that she wasn't going to be good enough and was, like, trying to protect herself from feeling those feelings. And so that was a huge inner shift for me. And that inner shift really allowed me. One of the greatest things I learned from working with you was to just take messy, imperfect action. I just felt so free because I had woken up out of the illusion that my performance meant anything about me. And so I was. I was free. And so I was willing to take risks that I wasn't willing to take anymore, knowing that it meant nothing about me, that I was precious and whole and complete just as I was. So that was a huge shift because part of creating a successful business is taking messy and perfect action. There is no perfect roadmap to follow without pitfalls. Right? So I took that messy and perfect action, and I'm so grateful that I did because it allowed me to create the business that I have today, which is so in alignment with the vision that I had. The business that I have today, which is really, I would not have this business had I not worked with you. And inside the program, I would not have it. But the business I have today, I facilitate a group program. So I facilitate a group program when we do so when we run it from January through June every year, I don't work more than 12 hours a month while the program is running. I take summers off so I can be with my kids and we can play and have fun. And in the fall, I enroll for my group program. But the fall enrollment is usually anywhere from, like, four to eight complimentary workshops that we do. Again, not working more than 12 to 14 hours a month. I have so making and making six figures in that business, and I also have one to one outside of that. So I'm making six figures in a group coaching program, and I do not work more than 12 to 14 hours a month summers off.
A
Have you ever felt like there's something more you're meant to do like you've outgrown the life that you're living, but you don't know what comes next. Maybe you've checked all the boxes and still something inside whispers this isn't it. What if that whisper is actually a calling, A sign that you're here to do something meaningful, something that lights you up and serves others in the process? After two decades of experience as a psychotherapist and coach running a multiple seven figure business, I've seen what's possible when people fully step into their purpose. B
It's such a gift and blessing because I'm able to serve and do the work that I was called to do. But yet I still have all the spaciousness to be the mom that I want to be, to pick up my kids from school, to take excellent care of myself, to have date night with my husband and not have to say no no no. I just have one more email to send. So it's just a gift and blessing to have the life that I have and be able to serve in the way that I do. There's no hustle, there's no grind. There's no burnout. Working with you in your program, I finally learned how to step into this dream that I had held in my heart for so long and just to.
A
Give people context, the program that Lindsey's been talking about. This is our ICF Accredited Coach Certification program. It's called the Institute for Coaching Mastery and I am so blessed to have you as a mentor coach. But please go on just so people.
B
Have context, you know, as a head coach inside of icm, I am so present to the students and how badly they want to generate income and create clients and create the life and business of their dreams. And we are a stand for that. And we're all. We are here to support them in creating that. And at the end of the day, it's that journey of creating clients and creating the income is ultimately in service to us. Waking up to the truth of who we are and being that in our lives and that that is the greatest success that can be achieved inside of this program. And what I've experienced in my own life, what I've seen in the students, is as we use everything, including our businesses, to wake up to the truth of who we are, life just tends to work because life is a mirror. It mirrors back to us, ourselves, our beliefs, what we think about ourselves. Life is a mirror. And so as. And so I always am encouraging students inside of the. That's been my journey. And I'm always encouraging students inside the program to use it all to really wake up, and your life and your business will be a reflection of that.
A
Amen. Amen. And I also just present to you, when you were in the program, you really showed up and started hitting your goals really quickly. And I remember we were just about to go into a sprint, and you're like, should I be sprinting? And I'm like, no, because you've arrived. And so giving yourself permission to have the courage to be like, I don't need to push bigger, better, faster, more. You are like, I'm clear. I wanna be present with my kids. I'm already filled my client spaces, making the money I want. This is what's more important to me. And I think we don't hear enough of those stories where people choose to be like, this isn't more than enough. And I'm already so grateful, even if in the program we're like, let's all go together, that you have that authority to be like, I've arrived. This is it.
B
That's right, I've arrived. And I didn't buy into my ego's old pattern of comparison and thinking that in order to be good enough, I had to be doing what everybody else was doing, that I could really listen to my heart and my essence, which was saying, you've arrived. Given this season of your life, this is exactly aligned with where you want to be and what you want to be doing. And because I had done the inner work, I could hear my truth and I had the courage and willingness to honor it and not think I had to give in to the illusion of the ego that would have me push harder and work harder so that I could be on Instagram or whatever, you.
A
Know what I mean?
B
Because that was proof that I had arrived. I was so onto it.
A
It's powerful and it's courageous to be like, this is what I really wanted and I arrived.
B
Well, so often there's, I think there's a misunderstanding that in order to make six figures or multiple six figures that you have to sacrifice in some way your well being or time with family. And I am living proof that that is not true. And every day I'm just so grateful.
A
I think it's such an important part of this conversation. Yes, there's the inner work, but there's also the outer things. And here that you can do. You're doing six figures just in your group and then you've got other, you know, you also are working with people one to one. So you're doing multiple six figures and you don't have to use social media like you are living proof that you don't need to rely or ever use social media to create clients. And I think that people hear that and they don't believe me. And I just want to emphasize that social media is more entrepreneurial for people that want to do seven figures. And beyond, I think is a great path, but it's the long path. It takes time to build your own audience. There's a way to be of service and plug into other people's communities, offering value and enrolling and filling up your program. I also. How long have you been doing your signature women's group?
B
So our signature program is called Authentic Living and we're now enrolling our ninth cohort and there's over 160 women that have gone through the program and they are truly raving fans because the work is transformational. It's the work that I learned inside of icm that work is transformational. They are raving fans. And the beauty is we fill our program with ease and grace again, no hustle, no pushing. Because they are such raving fans that they refer their friends and their family to join the program.
A
It's amazing and it's. I don't know why this is not more of the conversation in this space where it's like, just take care of your people. Like serve them deeply and they will come back, they will invite friends. Marketing is really in sales, is really.
B
Just about service and relationship. It's about relationship Connect and sir.
A
Yeah. And so I love that you shared taking messy action like lowering the bar. And that was really helpful. Specifically for the perfectionistic pattern. Were there other outer things that. And just to be clear, like 80% of the game is inner. So even when I'm saying outer, we're going to be doing the inner work along the way, which is what I really advise for people to have a more graceful path where you don't have to burn out. But I'm also wondering if. If there was something else that supported you with outer results that, that people can learn from and apply in their own life.
B
Absolutely. I think I had a lot of fear and resistance around sales. And I say sales because I don't really see it as sales anymore. I see it as service. But at the time I had a lot of fear and resistance around sales. And my orientation with sales was I would show up with a lot of fear and anxiety because my orientation was, what can I get? What can I get? Or am I doing it right? Am I saying the right thing? So I was so in my head and I avoided those conversations. But through working with you and through the program, I really did learn that sales is just service. It's about showing up from your heart and helping people transform their lives. And that is such a gift and blessing to be able to do so. This program really reoriented me towards what sales really is and supported me in. Like, I showed up with integrity, I showed up with heart, and I showed up from service. And that was a game changer. Focused more on what can I give and not focused anymore on what can I get. And that was a game changer for me.
A
This is huge that you're speaking to this because so many people have resistance to sales, especially because the ways that we've been sold to most of the time in society are from fear based tactics. And it feels gross. And I think that's why people don't like it. And the fact that what I'm hearing you say is like, it does feel an integrity which is part of your values when you're offering people value before they even buy. These complimentary workshops is one way that you're doing that. I'll do it with social media challenges to give people other examples. You could give them a taste of a gifted session. So for example, your current clients, past clients could gift a session to other people in their community so that they can get a taste of your magic. And if they enjoyed the appetizer, they're going to love the full meal. And it Creates more committed clients. And people are just so grateful. Even if it's not somebody that signs up now, they may refer. Friends sign up later, but they're just so grateful to have somebody genuine and more committed to their transformation than just grabbing another client. It feels good to you, and it feels good to the person that you're inviting in to work with you. I want to just plug some of that. And I'm also hearing people say, well, how did you, Lindsey? How did you do it without social media? And I think the workshops has been your main way of enrolling people. So talk to us a little bit about what you're doing in the workshops and then just so people can learn and apply this to their own life.
B
Well, yes, the workshops, and it's about relationships. So the place I really started with, who are the people in my life? Who do I know? And reaching out to them. So, for example, I'm completely offline. We were very. I say we're very scrappy in the beginning. So we. One of my dear friends was part of a book club. It was a spiritual book club. And so we might. I have a business partner. My business partner and I went to this spiritual book club. There may be 10 women in this book club. And we offered what I would call a group Clarity session, which was basically supporting them and getting in touch with a heartfelt dream. Where they are now and what's blocking them from moving from where they are to where they want to be. So we offered them a tool that supported them in transforming a block that had been holding them back. They were all blown away by the workshop.
A
And just to give an example, the Clarity Workshop, it's my seven step signature framework for sales. You can do it with individuals or groups, but what you're speaking to right now, Lindsay, is really important because when you're enrolling somebody, you want to get them clear on what they would be, what is their vision, what would they be investing in, and what's getting in the way. And then give them a taste of your magic so that they're like, oh, this is possible.
B
And we learned. And I learned that through working with yo, I learned the Clarity session model. I learned that that was the way that we could sell. So we offered that to this group. And so our very first group program, our very first group program, we signed up three women from that book club. And our very first group, we charged $5,000 a person. We've since increased the fee. We enrolled 10 women, so made $50,000 within the first year. Within that. That year that I was working with you or working within the program and I five timed my investment, I made my investment back by five times because we made $50,000. And so yes, and that was all offline marketing, all offline, again, really utilizing the relationships that we already had, serving those people powerfully so that they wanted to say yes and continue working with us.
A
And that was when the program was six months at the time. And so, and I love that you are showing an example that there are 10 people, you enrolled three. And you don't have to have big audience when you are really energetically in alignment. You have strategies that feel good to you and to them. And they're, they convert, they're strong. You can create all the clients you want by plugging into other people's communities or already established groups. So it could be a meetup group, it could be you showing up as. So for example, maybe you have a specific niche. Maybe you coach new moms and you go to the breast pump clinic near you or you go virtually online and you offer a workshop like this. It's a templated process that doesn't have to be hard, it doesn't have to take a long time. And I don't know if you've seen this, Lindsay, but in the certification program, more and more people that I'm seeing, I'm like, this is the easy route. Take this. And if they don't do the nervous system regulation work, they will make it complicated creating busy work because they don't feel worthy. And so part of the work we do, and I would recommend whether you do my program or any pro anything to follow your dreams, do the inner work so that you don't replace one problem with another. Really work it at the root, embody your inherent worth and value. Then from there the practical steps are a lot easier to maintain. But 80% is inner.
B
Yeah. And I love that you just said that because it reminds me of just such a powerful moment in my journey. So the day of our first retreat for our six month program, I went on a run and I was listening to Josh Groban. You raise me up. And there's a line where he says, and I'm not a singer, so forgive me, but he says, you raise me up so I can stand on mountains. And I'm getting emotional because I remember I just stopped cold in my tracks and I started crying because I hadn't even delivered the program yet, but I had reached the mountaintop. I was so proud. Not because of the number of women that had enrolled in the group, not because the amount of money that we made, but because of the woman I'd become. In the process of creating this program, I really had learned to relate to myself with love and compassion and gentleness, not harshness and criticism. I had learned to value my being over my overdoing. I had learned that it was okay to rest and play and that that was part of the journey. I was so proud of the woman that I had become. And just on the heels of what you said, I was so clear, and I still am, that the results that we manifested were a reflection of the inner work that I had done. It was a reflection, like I. Of having healed that story of I'm not good enough. And the true success wasn't in creating the business. I am grateful for the business every day, but that was not my true success. It was becoming the woman that I had always wanted to be. And the program, it was like I had the Sunday, and the program was just the cherry on top of the Sunday. And I continue to feel that way. Like you said, coaching, whatever we do in the world is just the path. It's just the path. It's the. It's the playground that we chose to play on, to wake up to the truth of who. Who we are and to live into our heartfelt dreams and desires and to become who we're here to be. And I'm just grateful every day that I said yes to this journey, that I said yes to doing this work, that I said yes to following that call that I heard the day that I sat next to you to get our master's in spiritual psychology. I'm just so grateful every day. So grateful.
A
Me, too. And we had a similar yes. And we've both honored that. And I want people to really hear that. That if fear comes up, it's not. Those blocks are the stepping stones towards the thing you want, towards who you become. Letting go of any of the misunderstandings, misidentifications, so that you can embody who you already are. And there's nothing more rewarding than honoring that call and the purpose and the fulfillment and the alignment of doing it. It's not like an end goal. It's, for me, a goal that I want to continue discovering because I. My life gets better as I show up to do this work for myself, and I can serve more people as a result of it. And I just have so much love and gratitude for you in my life. And actually, one of the. One of the things that changed my life was witnessing you be loving to Yourself. I knew criticism. I knew self criticism. I did not know self compassion. And when I saw you speak lovingly to yourself, it broke open an invisible ceiling. I didn't even know that was in the realm of possibility. And I'm curious if there's any words that you would share to your younger self who was maybe anxious like I have this calling. I want to live my purpose. I know I'm meant for more, but didn't know how it was going to happen or if she was safe to take the next steps towards honoring that calling. What would you say to her?
B
I would say to her, I love you. You are so precious, just as you are. You have nothing to prove. You have nothing to prove. And you're not crazy for wanting this. You're not crazy for wanting this. That longing in your heart was put there for a divine reason. And I wanted you can trust, you can trust your heart. You can trust your heart. It's there for a reason. And there's nothing you could ever do or say that would make you unlovable or imperfect in my eyes. And it's safe for you to go after this. You are so loved and you are so held. And this journey will have you become who you've always, who you truly are. It will have you remember who you truly are, which is really the greatest gift and blessing there is.
A
So beautiful. And, and I. And I'm just coming back to the part in the conversation where you were like these parts of you that were insecure, scared, they get to be here in car, they get to be embraced and included, but they don't get to drive. And I love that approach, which is exactly what we do in the certification program because then you're not burning out, then you're in alignment. Then it's not. It's like you're really using everyday life triggers for your awakening to embody who you already are. And if any parts forgot that you insource safety to really remind them. And it is such a privilege and a blessing to have you in my life to co facilitate and serve the students. And I'm so honored to have you as the head coach in the certification program. And for those that are interested or want to learn more, we are opening doors. We open every, every year, the beginning of the year for a new cohort. And you can, if you want, the tools, the community, the support to really do your work, to feel confident in deeply and profoundly helping other people change their lives and to learn business through the lens of personal development so that you're starting or scaling right.
