Matt
are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the children of God. This is Sermon on the Mount Episode three. We're going to unpack this passage and we're going to notice that it's not the fact that they're peacemakers that makes them children of God, but this is more of like a. Like we keep saying about the Sermon on the Mount especially, but the scripture in its entirety is a mirror, right? It's a mirror into. Into you. Like we like people like to come into the shop and argue about doctrine and argue about like how you interpret the Bible. But the reality is, I think we're missing like a deeper reality. Is that, is that really the scripture is interpreting us more than we're interpreting the scripture and of like all of the Bible that you could really use to use as a mirror and reflect on yourself and really interpret to yourself who you are. The Sermon on the Mount is the most for that. So, so we're going to dig into this. Blessed are the peacemakers. We're in verse nine. For they shall be called the children of God. Not to do a spoiler alert, but that's not what makes them children of God. But we're going to get into that later. Of what makes them the children of God. This is just more of a manifestation of the fact that they are children of God. So first thing we got to look at is peace, right? Blessed are the peacemakers. Nobody's going out making peace unless they have peace, right? So let's look at this Greek word. It's Irene E I R E N E. In the Greek, it's translated rest, quietness or one. That's an intriguing thought. The definition is like harmony, right? Like music. You know what I'm saying? So it's not like, it's not like out of tune music and like chaos, right? Like that's not God's deal. God's not into like out of tune chaos. He's into harmony, security, safety. This is an interesting way. It's worded in the Blue Letter Bible. The tranquil state of a soul assured of its salvation through Christ and so fearing nothing from God and content with its earthly lot of whatever sort it is. I like that. That's peace, man. Like regardless of your circumstances, that's peace. So this word peacemaker is Irena Pois if you're French, I guess, or Irina Poios if you're English or from California. But it's peacemaker and it's the only place that word's found in the Bible. But blessed are these, these peacemakers. So let's just jump into like, what that looks like, what this word peace looks like. And it's going to be complicated because it's another one of those words that are kind of just very difficult to unpack. Right. But we'll just do the best we can biblically to. To break down the biblical definition of this word. So let's look at Mark 5, 2534 is going to be our first passage. We're going to go heavy on the scripture today too. Okay. If you guys are ready. I'm ready. In a certain woman which had an issue of blood 12 years

and had suffered many things of many, many physicians, and had spent all that she had and was nothing bettered, but rather grew worse.
Matt
Not to be nasty, but like health care. I don't know if this is like the first time period where healthcare has been kind of a scam and not super Useful. I wonder. I don't know. I don't have a time machine, so I wasn't there. But I would, I would guess that maybe the situation with healthcare didn't always work. You know what I'm saying? Not to go off on a tangent. When she had heard of Jesus, she came in the press behind and touched his garment. Almost like I've tried everything else. So now I'll try Jesus, which is kind of embarrassing for some of us. We were like that too. Instead of just like from the jump saying like, I'm going straight to Jesus, like, yo, I tried everything else. Not working. I'm desperate now. I'll go to him and sometimes he has to get us to that place, right? When she had heard of Jesus, when she had heard of Jesus, came in the press behind and touched his garment. For she said, if I may touch but his clothes, I shall be whole. And straightway the fountain of her blood was dried up. This blood issue that she had instantly dries up and she felt in her body that she was healed of the plague. And Jesus immediately knowing in himself that virtue had gone out of him, turned him about in the press and said, who touched my clothes? I love this passage, man and his disciples said, you see the multitude thronging you and you say, who touched me? So imagine he's in this crowd, dude, he's like coming down the street and there's a crowd just thronging him and all of a sudden he stops and says, who touched me? The disciples are like, what do you everybody like? 10,000 people just touched you. What are you talking about? And it's as if he was saying like, no, no, who touched me intentionally?

My name is Mackenzie, and I started a GoFundMe for the adoptive mother of a nonverbal autistic child. The mother had lost her job because she wasn't able to find adequate care for this autistic child. So she really needed some help with living expenses, paying some back bills. So I launched a GoFundMe to help support them during this crisis. And we raised about $10,000 within just a couple of months. I think that the surprising thing was by telling a clear story and just like, really being very clear about what we needed, we had some really generous donations from people who were really moved by the situation that this family was struggling with. GoFundMe is the world's number one fundraising

Matt
Start your GoFundMe today at gofundme.com that's gofundme.com gofundme.com this podcast is supported by GoFundMe and I. The reason this is very vivid to me is, like, I always thought about this when I was going to church was like, I remember being in the lobby and it's like, yo, did you see the ball game? And where we going to eat afterwards? And how's your money, man? And the job? And, like, you know, there's just all these, like, casual conversations about things not really pertaining to life and godliness, but just kind of about, like, you know, the superficial level of just, like, BSing with somebody in the lobby. You know, they just have the conversation and they're like, be blessed, you know, and then that's it. And I always thought about this passage, like, man, is there just a ton of people just, like, casually. Just kind of casually bumping into Jesus at church? They're not very intentional. It's not really meaningful. And I remember one time. This is going to be super embarrassing on, like, multiple levels, but I'm gonna say it anyway. So I used to hang out with the singing pastor at this church. They call it a worship pastor. And they're cool people. I would totally, like. I don't know how you want to say it. I would totally, like, enter into worship. Like, it was like. It was like, a big thing for me. And one time after church, the dude's like, hey, you all right? And I was like, yeah, yeah, what's up? And he's like, no, no. Like, are you good? I was like, yeah, man, everything's good. He's like, well, whatever, you know, whatever's going on, you know, you can talk to me about it, right? And I was like, bro, everything's good. Like, what's up? And he said, well, no, I just saw you crying, you know, like, during worship. He's like, the leader, right? So he could, like, see everybody in the crowd. And so he's like, I seen you crying. And I was like, yeah, we're. We're at, like, we're. We're worshiping God, right? Like, yeah, dude. I'm in this place of just like, almost like, confusion over, like, how did my life get this good? How did it get like this? God, how do we get to know each other like this? Like, how am I. How did I go from the stone cold junkie and loser and idiot and like, living on the street and somehow force gun my way to this place that I'm at now? And I'm, like, staggered by it. Yeah, I'm crying. Like, I'm like. I think I was crying hard. Like. Like very violently crying. You know what I mean? But I was just wor. I was worshiping. I just, you know, and there's a church where they're, like, running around with the flags and the banners. Yeah, yeah, they're doing, like. They're doing like, jumping jacks and they're just, like, spinning and doing flips in the. In the walkway and stuff. And little kids are running around and, like, playing games and stuff. It's like, wild like that. But I was like, yeah, dude, I'm entering into this place of just, like, being close to the Lord. Like, I want to touch Him. Like, I want to be right there with him. And so I'm not. I'm never saying that. Like, you can't enter into that through music on Sunday Morning. I'm not saying you can't. I'm just saying, like, so what was
Co-host
his problem with it? Why did he ask you about it?
Matt
He just thought I. I don't know, maybe he thought my dog died or something. I don't know. He just, like, you know, I was, like, violently crying, I think, but I. But I just was like, in so close of a place to God, like, if I'm really worshiping God, not just in the 501C3, like in my car or in my closet when I'm reading scripture or whatever, I'm Cr. I cry like when I'm like super close to the Lord. Like, I guess everybody's different. Everybody has like these different reactions when the spirit of God comes on them and they're really intimate and close with them. But, like, I'm just making the point that, like, yeah, anytime I was going on Sunday morning, I was like, very intentional and I was very observant that there was some people who maybe from the monotony of life and the monotony of going to church all the time maybe was just kind of casual, just kind of bumping into Jesus. And that of always reminded me of the story, for what it's worth.
Co-host
Well, I just. I actually just looked up the word so. Because it says the virtue went out of him.
Matt
Yeah.
Co-host
So the strong's definition of virtue is strength, power, ability, or inherent power.
Matt
Yes.
Co-host
Interesting that, like, she took that out of him.
Matt
Yeah.
Co-host
And he's like, yo, what happened?
Matt
Yes, I'm very aware that that virtue just left me.
Co-host
Right.
Matt
Dare I say grace? Maybe there's an element of like, that's, that's this discussion of grace. It's not just. It's not just this rad thing or the life of God or the energy of God, but it's the ability to impart it in humans. Right. I think we're actually going to get into that later because as you're going to see grace and peace go together like, there's no peace without grace. But not to jump the gun, let's finish with this. Jesus immediate. Immediately knowing in himself that virtue had gone out of him, turned him about in the press and said, who touched my clothes? And his disciples said unto him, you see the multitude thronging you and sayest, thou who touched me? And he looked round about to see her that had done this thing. But the woman, fearing and trembling, knowing what was done in her, came and fell down before him and told him all the truth. And he said unto her, daughter, thy faith hath made thee whole. Go in peace and be whole of thy plague. I just think that's a great picture of peace, man. You're like in this place for 12 years. Imagine the agony, the pain, the suffering that you're going through. You're going to all these humans, there's no solution. And then, boom, there's a solution and you're made whole. That's a wonderful picture of peace that can't be had if your whole world is good all the time. It's this wonderful, definitely different thing that you can feel that, like, if she didn't have 12 years of pain and suffering, that that piece couldn't have been so powerful. And it's intriguing that he said, thy faith hath made thee whole. A lot of people get touchy about that. They're like, oh, no, your faith doesn't do anything. Jesus says different. He, he says, your faith has made you whole. That's what he says.
Co-host
So she had faith in him. It's also interesting because all these other people are touching him, but the effect doesn't happen to these other people. They're not able to withdraw this power from Jesus. But this lady who's been in pain for so long, I feel like there's something to that as well. Like people that operate in consistent pain, I think maybe being a little bit more comfortable with the idea of death or this idea of suffering.
Matt
They're desperate.
Co-host
They're desperate. Yeah. There is something about that kind of a person that can operate in that realm and spirit realm, some would say, and, and, and draw that power from Jesus and just, I mean, just as close, not even touching him.
Matt
It just seems like such a deep level of peace, dude. If there's been 12 years of. And chaos and suffering, like, imagine the peace from that, right? So we're just trying to unpack this word peace. And it's a weird thing about this story. I think sometimes when I think about it, it, you know, she kind of hid. She kind of hid. It says that, but the woman, fearing and trembling, knowing what was done in her, came and fell down before him. Like, initially she just dipped. Like she just kind of hid. And I think you kind of always have to think about the dude Adam, right? Like the dude Adam hid right in. But it's almost like opposite. It's almost like Adam was in this place of peace. Then he disobeys God and then he hides. And it's almost like with Adam it was like, hey, you were living in peace, but now you're going to live in suffering, right? Whereas this woman lived in suffering, hid from the shame, right? Same way Adam hid from the shame. She was hiding from the shame. I think there's a lot packed up in this that like she was unclean. In that culture, to be bleeding and to touch someone so she's ashamed. And it's like opposite. It's like, Adam, you hid. You, you were living in peace. Now you're, now you hid and now you're going to be ashamed to her is like, you were ashamed, now you hid. You don't need to now you're in peace. You know What I mean, so there's this connection. It just makes me think about that when somebody's hiding. It's like, that's what Adam did. It's like opposite, right? All right, so let's get into the next thing. So that's peace, right? If we can get a context of, like, peace, right? It's this powerful force, man. It's like a lot of these words are very powerful forces that we just kind of flippantly use, like love, faith, grace, peace. There's so many phrases in the Bible. They're just like such powerful phrases and such powerful words and contain so much in them, and we just kind of use them casually. But this is a powerful word, peace. All right, let's look at Matthew 10, 5, 14. We're going to notice the ability to spread this piece, right? Because that's what we're talking about is blessed are the peacemakers. So Matthew 10, starting in verse 5, this is after Jesus has called unto him his 12 disciples. He gives him power against unclean spirits. And then he says, these 12 Jesus sent forth and commanded them, saying, go not into the way of the Gentiles and into any city of the Samaritans. Enter you not, but go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. And as you go preach, saying, the kingdom of heaven is at hand. Kill the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils. Freely you have received. Freely give and say, freely you have received. Now take up an offering. He said, freely you have received. Freely give. Provide neither gold nor silver, nor brass in your purses, nor script for your journey, neither two coats, neither shoes nor yet staves, for the workman is worthy of his meat. And into whatsoever city or town you shall enter, inquire in it who is worthy. And there abide until you go from there. And when you come into a house, salute it. And if the house be worthy, let your house come upon it. This is beyond, I think, what a lot of us understand of this word peace. It's this. It's this force that you have. And if the house be worthy, let your peace come upon it. But if it be not worthy, let your. Let your peace return to you. I know you're going to like this, but we're going to put it in context. And whosoever shall not receive you nor hear your words when you depart out of that house or city, shake off the dust of your feet. So it's this ability to spread peace, right? Sometimes peace is compatible and sometimes peace is incompatible. So just let that Sink in for a minute. He's saying like, yeah, there's people where you can spread your peace and then there's others man, you take that force back, we're lost.

Right, so you have the ability to create the environment you live in is really what he's saying. Right? Which some of us have come to understand that, that like really man, at the end of the day, like I'm creating my sphere, like I'm creating the world that I live in. Like whatever I entertain in my thoughts and my actions in my relationships, like this is forming the reality of my life. Like whatever I'm taking into my spirit, like that's forming the reality of my life and how I act. Like this is why we talk about like you act this way no matter what. Like if somebody's nasty to you, you don't come back with nasty because now they're controlling how you're acting. That's what, that's why we say like no, you, you set out to be who you're going to be and stick to that. So, so let's look up Romans 12, 16, 21. We're just going to keep jumping for a while to just kind of paint this picture. Romans 12, 16, 21. This is gonna, this, like I said, in some places peace is compatible and in some places peace is not compatible. And the, and the Bible acknowledges that. So we're in Romans 12, 16 through 21 it says this, be of the
Co-host
same mind, one toward another mind, not high things, but condescend to. But condescend to men of low estate. Be not wise in your own conceits, recompense to no man, evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men.
Matt
That's what I'm saying. Don't let people own you. Like, if you set out for your day today, you're like, dude, I'm gonna go, I'm gonna spread peace. Like I'm gonna do my thing. I'm gonna live a place of happiness and joy and being grateful. And then somebody does evil to me and now I do evil back to them. They own me. That means they own me. I'm not going anybody own me. I already belong to Christ, who's going to own me. Nobody could own me and be nasty to me and change how I'm going to act. Now I already belong to Christ. I already set out for how I'm going to live. I'm going to live like that. And then he says the why. But verse 18 is a wild passage, man. If it be possible, as much as lies in you, live peaceably with all men. So the Bible acknowledges this big if, like if it's possible. It's saying like, dude, there's some people, you're not going to live at peace with this. Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves. But rather give place unto the wrath, rather give place unto wrath. For it is written, vengeance is mine, I will repay, saith the Lord. This is like this thing where sometimes you got beef and God's like, hey, you can go stick up for yourself or I can stick up for you. But it's not going to be both, it's not going to be both. So you pick. And I've just kind of learned over time, like I'm like, yeah God, I'd rather have you deal with it however you're going to deal with it. Like, I don't need to get wrapped up in any of this. Therefore, if your enemy hunger, feed him. If he thirst, give him drink, for in so doing you shall heap coals of fire on his head. Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good. That's a great one liner, man. If you just needed to think like, hey, where should my head be at today? Just keep that. Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good. And I know you're like, yeah, if your enemy hungers, feed him. If he thirsts, give him drink. That's right, because I'm gonna put coals of Fire on his head got me thinking. But I don't know if that's not just saying, like, it's gonna get his attention. Maybe it's that. Maybe you're like, no, let's burn his head.
Co-host
Maybe.
Matt
But maybe it's more along the lines of getting his attention.
Co-host
To me, when I read it, it said, if you really want to burn
Matt
them, I knew that's how you read it. Let.
Co-host
Let God do it.
Matt
That's all right. We don't really interpret the Scripture. It interprets us. All right, so now we're in. Hebrews 12, 14, and 15. Follow peace with all men. Right.
Co-host
And holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord.
Matt
So here we see a parallel. And pure in heart. Remember we did pure in heart last week or the week before the pure in heart, they'll see God. This says, without holiness, you won't see God. There's a connection there. We're starting to notice this. We're putting passages together. Follow peace with all men in holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord. Looking diligently, lest any man fail of the grace of God. Did you know the Bible warns that you can fail of the grace of God? I'm not even going to unpack that. I'm simply saying that the Scripture says you can fail of the grace of God. That's all I'm saying. Looking diligently, lest any man fail of the grace of God, lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled. So I just want to notice this connection between peace and grace. It looks like, biblically speaking, there is no peace without grace. And as we unpack it, like in the greetings, it's always grace and peace. It's always in that order which we're going to get into here in a second. Not to jump the gun, but there's this connection with peace and grace. And somehow, if you're not doing that and you're not diligent about it, you can fail of the grace of God, which is tied to bitterness springing up in you and troubling you. Like bitterness is what will spring up and be a root that needs ripped out. It will trouble you. What I want to bring attention to is, though, where it says follow peace in the Greek, one of the. One of the definitions for that word is pursue. So it's saying, like, pursue peace. Blessed are the peacemakers. Pursue peace. And then, of course, that verse 15 is the warning and the connection between grace and peace. Right. Let's look at two Peter 1, 1 through 4. This is. This is what I'm talking about. Like grace and peace. Watch how he opens up. Second epistle general of Peter 2, Peter 1, Simon Peter, a servant and an apostle. Notice the order. Dude, these men of God, they always wrote servant first. They never said, I'm a big dog. They never said, I'm apostle. They always. First things first. Said a servant. I belong to Christ. I'm just a servant. And by the way, he called me to be an apostle. Simon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ to them that have obtained like precious faith with us through the righteousness of God and our Savior, Jesus Christ. Grace and peace be multiplied. Like, we want to enter into that multiplied, not. Not addition. Right? Not three plus four is seven. Three times four is 12. Right. I got my math right.
Co-host
Yeah, you got it.
Matt
All right. I'm just checking. You see what I'm saying? Like, sometimes you may go through this experience or recognize it in somebody else, where they're, like, growing exponentially, man. They're growing. They're growing so fast. You're saying, like, bro, you're like, your game's strong, and you're, like, increasing your proximity to God. And you're clearly, like, in the Scriptures, it's multiplying, dude. That's how it goes in our kingdom. It multiplies. He says, grace and peace be multiplied unto you. How? Through the knowledge of God and of Jesus Christ, our Lord. This is intriguing to me because, you know, your friend, I forget her name, but she goes to Orthodox Church in Oxford. She invited you to come before she's seen you here.
Co-host
Haley.
Matt
She came in yesterday. She came in with a Russian Orthodox monk. Did you ever meet him?
Co-host
No.
Matt
He's like this big guy. He's got, like, a cape on, like a wild cross and stuff. He's like. I was like, yo, what's up with the Buddies? Like, yeah, he's a Russian Orthodox monk.
Co-host
Was she looking for me?
Matt
Yeah. Yeah. But you guys were doing your show, okay. And I was like, don't bother him during the show, whatever you do. So then we entered into this discussion about how the Orthodox has everything, right? And that's what needs to be looked at, is, like, there has to be bishops and what. I think I forget all the titles they had in that. But those are the ones who tell you what the Bible means, because some people think they can just read the Bible and understand it. And I said, yeah, yeah. That's like. We're like, that.
Co-host
I didn't know that. They believe that this is what she
Matt
Was explaining to me yesterday, okay, I think any big denomination or big. And I think she would say, no, we're not a denomination. We're the right way. I'm pretty sure that's what all the denominations say. Like, that's why they say they're.
Co-host
That. Yeah.
Matt
But anyway, we got into this thing. She's like, well, yeah, then anybody can say whatever they wanted to say. I said, well, yeah, but at the end of the day, we all have to give an account for our life before God. So, yeah, so we all do have to look in the scripture and determine for ourselves what the Scripture says. And I said, you're not going to stand at the judgment seat with the monk or with the bishop or with any of the people. Like, you're going to stand before the judgment seat of Christ. But then it made me think when she left is like, yeah, what is everybody trying to get out of the Scripture? Like, this is a bigger discussion when. When the certain groups are saying, no, no, you have to get the truth from somebody at the top. They determine what it means. So I don't. Like, that's not even my view of the Scripture. Like, my view of the Scripture is to know God. I'm not. I never got into the Scripture to, like, have flawless doctrine. And I also don't think, like, oh, yeah, I have a different view than you on the Scripture. And so therefore, I'm going to demand that you see my view. Because that's ultimately what she's saying is, like, somebody holds the right view and everybody else needs to hold that view because it's the right view. Whereas I'm saying, like, I don't know, man. There's a lot wrapped up in this eternal word of God. Like, his words are spirit and they are life. There's a lot going on here. This is more about it interpreting us instead of us interpreting it. And furthermore, like, my goal in reading the scriptures has never been to have flawless doctrine and be right and other people are wrong. My only goal coming to the Scriptures from day one was to know the Lord. That's it. That's it. The Scripture. And if the Bible doesn't lead you to a place of knowing God and hearing his voice and living accordingly, then throw it away. If it's just a math book or a science book, and now your denomination can be right because you've got your doctrine in place and everybody else is wrong, throw it away, man. And I don't even know. That would be so embarrassing to me. I wouldn't. I don't Even know that I would read the Bible if I thought that, like, I'm constantly going in the word of God and I'm in expectation of being shown something that I didn't see before. I'm not thinking like, oh, this is already my doctrine. It's flawless. It's perfect. Why would I read the Bible then? Like, I'm constantly looking. Dude, I thought about this story of Elijah for 20 years that he got took into heaven. The dude Sean from Kingdom in context said in 10 seconds, like, nah, man, if you study it out, he wrote a letter after that, we're lost.

Matt
It doesn't look like he did get taken to heaven. It looks like he got put somewhere else, bro. Can you imagine hearing that and saying, no, no, no, no, you're wrong. You know what I'm saying? Can you. Can you imagine? You said, no, no, no. My. My denomination already believes this, this, this and this. That would be madness. That would be madness. Right? So it's like, I'm just saying, like, the point of the scripture is to know the Lord, know his voice. That way you're able to apply it to your life and live accordingly in a relationship with him. And if it doesn't do that, then it's worthless.
Co-host
Well, where do you put. So I. I love Haley, but where do you put, like, somebody whose life is messed up and they were searching before? Maybe they, I don't know from what I see now look from the outside looking in, because I'm not, like, as close friends with her as before, but since she's discovered the Orthodox Church, it seems like she's kind of tightened up her game and maybe something that she needed.
Matt
Amen.
Co-host
For me, like, I. That's the reason I don't go to that type of church, because I understand. I understand, like, the. The structure and the liturgy and what they're talking about. I'm just kind of like. Like, I think that it's good, but I don't. I don't necessarily agree with it or need it.
Matt
No, no, I think it's all good. Anybody in any denomination, it's all good.
Co-host
I think she's also coming from a Pentecostal denomination and then going into this and seeing a vast difference, and now she's going to tell us. But it's like, it's very much like we have. We've had other people on the show that they became Catholic, and then they're like, Catholicism. And it's like, yeah, I understand you guys like the order, but, like, you're excited about this thing, and now you want to shove it down people's throats. And it's like, yeah, it's not gonna. It's not gonna happen.
Matt
I think that's more what I'm getting at is like, yeah, I may have views on it, but I'm not demanding that you see it my way.
Co-host
No, it's like, this is how I see it.
Matt
But, you know, this is a book pertaining to life and godliness. It's not pertaining to having flawless doctrine.
Co-host
Yes.
Matt
It's just. To me, it's just a lot deeper than that. And probably a lot of the points they're making are right, is that you end up with all these crazy denominations. There's no unity in the body. And therefore you have people saying the craziest stuff out of Bible passages. They're probably totally right about that. I'm just saying, like, no man is going to correct that. Only the Holy Spirit is going to correct that. And I think it would be rad if one day that does happen in the church, that by the spirit of God, the entire body of Christ does start to see clearly things pertaining to the Scripture. Like, that would be incredible. But no dude from this denomination or that denomination is going to do that.
Co-host
I think, and this is a hard truth, the denominations are not going to help you in your shortcomings in your personal life. But your approach of like, hey, pick that up. Pick the Bible up yourself. And Read it and really try to understand that. That, that has a much better possibility of helping you and your personal life. A lot of these people get to these places where they have to rely on the denominations because there are extreme shortcomings in their personal life that they have convictions over. And it's like, okay, you found something closer to it, but that's internal. It's not going to help whatever has happened and whatever is going to happen in your. Your relationships or whatever it may be, read the Bible, read it for yourself and understand it. But if that helps you, great too. Yeah, but, yeah, I don't know. That's just my opinion on it.
Matt
Yeah, yeah, do the thing on, you know, on the Sunday or whatever. That's cool. But yeah, this has to be your whole life. Yeah. Okay. So it says, according as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness through the knowledge of him that called us to glory and virtue, whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises that by these you might be partakers of the divine nature. These are just rad Scriptures, dude. This is just in his opening. This is just in his greeting, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. So I couldn't help but read all four verses, but really I was just keying in on verse two, where it talks about grace and peace. Grace and peace be multiplied unto you. Like, that's like this blessing that these dudes do at the beginning of the letters. And I'm just making the point that, like, it's grace and peace in that order. Right? And we already alluded to it that, like, grace is the life of God. But it's not just that. It's like the desire and the ability of God to impart that into other people. Right. I gotta. I got a quote here. I don't even totally remember where I got it, but grace is ultimately the activity of God which puts at the disposal of sinning men and women all the things that give delight to him. So it's saying that, like, grace is this. It's the activity of God that he's willing to put inside of you. And what it does is gives you the ability to live this life that's pleasing to Him. Right? The external things can't do that. It's got to be this internal thing that he puts into us. And. And you could say that peace is the result of grace, right? It's the activity of God that produces peace for the child of God. Right. Because peacemakers are the children of God. Let's look at. Let's look at Psalm 34. Are you in a hurry?
Co-host
I got some places to be.
Matt
Okay, actually. Actually, I'm joking. We did that out of order. The. You. Okay, so. Okay, so. Hold on. Let me. I'll read the first verse, though. This is Psalm 34. It's a Psalm of David when he changed his behavior before Abimelech, who also goes by the name Ashish. And he. And he opens up Psalm 34, verse 1. He says, I will bless the Lord at all times. His praise shall continually be in my mouth. Let's look at the state that this dude's in when he says that. Because you're like, well, yeah, man, I'll bless the Lord. You know, when things. When I'm riding high, man, when I got a lot of money, when things are going good, when I'm crushing at the job, when I'm the big dog. Let's see if David's in that position when he's able to say this. I had a buddy in high school. It wasn't my buddy, but my buddy Anthony Paradiso was buddies with him. And I think his name was Luke Hawkins. But Anthony Paradiso told me the story. They were both in the military together, and he wanted to get discharged. This dude Luke, he started, like, going around dribbling invisible basketball and stuff. Yeah, he started, like, playing checkers and chess with himself and, like, yelling at the other guy, but, like, playing with himself, like, just, like, doing moves, and just started doing crazy stuff to get out of the military, which was just wild. When I came across this passage. Look at David, dude. It says, and David arose and fled that day for fear of Saul and went to Ashish, the king of Gath. This is after David bounces running from Saul, and he goes into the temple. Excuse me. And. He goes. He goes running to the priest there, and. Sorry about that. He goes running to the priest there, and he's like, hey, man, you got any food? You got any weapons? And the priest is like, yo, all we have is the show bread. And Jesus references this passage when he's making the point that, like, hey, religious rules are not designed to enclose you in. Like, yeah, that bread was not for common people. It was only for the priest. But if David was going to die, of course he. He could take the bread. Of course he could take the bread. So that. That's this story where he goes in, he says, hey, man, I need some bread. He says, all we have is the holy bread. He says, yeah, I'll take that. You guys got a sword? They go, all we have here is a sword of Goliath, which is a giant sword, right? So anyway, he gets all that. He bounces. He goes to Ashish in Gath, right? And the servants of a she said unto him to the king, isn't this David, the king of the land? Did they not sing one to another of him in dances, saying, saul has slain his thousands, and David is ten thousands. And hey, king, isn't this the guy that killed thousands of our people? And David laid up these words in his heart. Dude, this is, like, a thing I talk to kids in the coffee shop about all the time. You have to observe your surroundings. Like, you can't just be told what to do all the time, right? Like, if you're somebody that has to be told what to do at your job all the time, you're gonna do bad at life. Like, you have to observe your surroundings. If you call me and say, where are the straws at? Because, like, I need to restock the straws. Not only does that tell me that you've never restocked the straws and you've worked here for a year, it means you don't even know where they're at. It's a very small coffee shop. You haven't opened every cupboard in all of your hours of working here and just know where everything at just to be familiar with your surroundings. I'm always in shock by that. Like, I'm not knocking anybody for that. I think it's a generational thing. Maybe. I don't know, maybe the younger generation always was told what to do. And so they've just developed this mindset of not being able to observe their surroundings and make decisions based on the surroundings. They're waiting for someone to tell them what to do. But, like, you can't do that. Like, there's no. I know. I don't think I've ever been in a job where somebody was like, I'm going to give you this leadership role. I think I've only ever been in jobs where, like, I kept observing what was going on, doing the next thing, the next thing, the next thing. And then it was like, yeah, dude, you're the guy for that role because you're already doing it, right? I just think that's how life goes. But, like, look how critical it is with David. Dude. He observed, like, he's doing his thing, and he observes them saying this. He says, bro, I need to make. I need to make something happen here. Like, I need to adjust accordingly. They say, isn't this David, king of the land? David laid up these words in his heart. He was observing. He was keen, right? And he was sore afraid of Ashish, the king of Gath. And he changed his behavior before them and feigned himself mad in their hands and scrabbled on the doors of the gate and let his spittle fall down upon his beard, bro. So he's like at the gate and he's like going like this and he's like drooling. He's letting all his spit and drool just drool down his beard and just all over he's going, he's like, he's acting crazy. Then said Ashish unto his servants. Lo, you see the man is mad. Wherefore then have you brought him to me? I have. I need a madman that you brought this fellow to play the madman in my presence. Shall this fellow come into my house. So dude, this is an incredible ability to respond to a situation, dude, that David was able to observe that and do that.

Matt
I have another really stupid story.
Co-host
Here we go.
Matt
This story is so stupid, bro. So when I was in rehab, one of the chicks there that was like a counselor looking back, dude, she had to be a witch. She had to be something. She was something crazy. Anyway, she had us all do tarot cards, right? Like we had this group of 10 people and you put they were animal Cards, bro. Like, you pull an animal and then it, like, tells you these things, right? And you pulled a gator? No, I pulled a mountain lion. But hold on, hold on, hold on. So, like, as it went around the room, I was in shock, bro. Like, I didn't know the Lord, right? And I was definitely involved in the occult, not knowing it for, like, a long time and very drawn to the occult. And, dude, as it went around this room, like, all 10 people nailed it. Like, nailed it, dude. Whatever card they pulled and then they did, she described what that animal was like on the card. It was like a perfect description of that person. And I was like, yo, this is crazy, bro. So when it got to me, it was a mountain lion. And I don't remember all the stuff, but I remember the last word of said responsibility is the ability to respond to any situation. That's what it said. And so that's why, like, when I got older and then I did know the Lord and my kids want to watch Disney movies and stuff. I'm not like, oh, no, no, this is just fairy tales and funny. I'm like, yo, yo, yo. I don't know how, but this stuff. This stuff's real. This is true. Like, they're like, the way the witches and stuff do this. The sorcery with the witchcraft, whatever. Like, there's accuracy in it. Like, you, like, you got to be aware of that. It's not play time. It's not jokes. It's not just silly when the witch is, like, doing the cauldron with the rat tail and the bat wing in it and the stuff like, yo, don't let. Don't subject your kids to that. And if they are subjected to it, just explain to them, hey, hey, this is. This is wicked and evil. This isn't cool. Do you see what I'm saying? Anyway, I just say that to say, like, that was an interesting quote, was the responsibilities, the ability to respond to any situation. Look at David, dude. Look at his ability to respond to that. And he gets out of it. Okay, but my point is Psalm 34 is written in that state. That's what. That's how it opens up. It says a psalm of David when he changed his behavior before Abimelech, dude. Like, that's where he's at when he's writing this psalm. He says this. He says, I'll bless the Lord at all times. His praise shall continually be in my mouth, not just during praise and worship. When the fog machine's gone, it'll always be there. My soul shall make her boast in the Lord. The humble shall hear thereof and be glad. O magnify the Lord with me and let us exalt his name together. I sought the Lord and he heard me. That's real, Dude. That's like so heavy of a thing, Dude. If you're just going to God with like this list because you're supposed to pray, I don't know, that's so sad to me. It's like, dude, you can seek the Lord and he hears you, the creator of the universe. You're going back and forth with him. I sought the Lord and he heard me and delivered me from all my fears. They looked unto him and were lightened and their faces were not ashamed. This poor man cried, and the Lord heard him and saved him out of all his troubles. The angel of the Lord encamps round about them that fear him and delivers them. Dude, the fight's fixed like that. I don't think a lot of people understand. The fight's fixed. The angel of the Lord encamps round about them that fear him and deliver them. Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good. Blessed is the man that trusts in him. Oh, fear the law, the Lord you his saints, for there is no want to them that fear him. The young lions do lack and suffer hunger. But they that seek the Lord shall now shall not want any good thing. Right, like we've read it before in Matthew 6. It's also in the Sermon on the Mount. Seek ye first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these other things will be added unto you. That's what that's saying. They that seek the Lord shall not want any good thing. Come, you children, hearken unto me. I'll teach you the fear of the Lord. So this is David, like telling people, yo, I'll teach you how to live like this. What? Man is he that desires life and loves many days that he may see good. Here's the answer, here's the solution. Keep your tongue from evil and your lips from speaking guile or hypocrisy. Depart from evil and do good. Seek peace and pursue. Was a long winded way to get to this. But this is his counsel. Even in that state, Even when he's acting like a madman. He says, this is my council, man, in the craziest state, I'm pretending that I'm drooling all over myself and scrabbling on the wall. Even in that state, I gotta tell you, man, seek peace and pursue it. The eyes of the Lord are upon the righteous and his ears are open under their cry. That's so wild. The face of the Lord is against them that do evil to cut off the remembrance of them from the earth. The righteous cry in the Lord hears and delivers them out of all their troubles. The Lord is close unto them that are of a broken heart and save such as be of a contrite spirit. Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers them out of them all. He keeps all his bones. Not one of them is broken. Of course we know that's a prophecy. Yeah, Jesus didn't have a bone broken on the cross. Evil shall slay the wicked, and they that hate the righteous shall be desolate. The Lord redeems the soul of his servants, and none of them that trust in him shall be desolate. That's a picture of peace. None of them will be desolate.
Co-host
So why did he. Why did he write this psalm there? Like, what is the. What's the point of that? He wrote this in capture. Because he's saying he's supposed to be acting crazy, but he's telling them these truths.
Matt
No, I think he's writing this in private. I don't think he's telling. He's playing the madman in front of the public. I'm just making the point. That's how desperate his life had become. Like for us. We read it like a fairy tale. Imagine your life has become so desperate. You're not doing this to get a raise at your job. You're not doing this to be popular on the gram. You're doing this so you don't get killed. You don't get murdered in the street. Like, you're about to get killed. At any moment, they're going to come out and hang you or stab you through your heart, whatever they're going to do. You're that desperate, you have to pretend like you've turned into a madman even in that state. He's so desperate, he writes this to me. That's just so big of a deal. And he's talking about peace in it. He's really talking about peace, pursuing peace. That's just wild to me, man. It's just. He's talking about seeking peace. I just think we don't have any excuses. I just like these passages where I read them, and I'm like, God, I don't have any problems. Like, I don't whatever. Like, whatever thing that I've been thinking is making my life hard or tough right now. It's not that hard. Like, like, this dude's Having to pretend that he's lost his mind just so he doesn't die. And in that state, he's able to write that, and he's able to pursue peace. All right, we're moving on. We're just painting a picture about peace right now. Now we're in Colossians 3, 1, 15, a couple more big passages. It goes like this. I love this. Oh, you want to read it?
Co-host
If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.
Matt
Yeah, yeah, man. That's like. That's your focus now. Seek those things which are above. Seek heavenly things. Oh, I know. The earthly things are cool. Your favorite ball team won. You got a new truck, you got a big house. That's awesome. But let's start seeking those things that are above, that are eternal. Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. It's a big one. Why? Because you are dead and your life is hid with Christ in God. I've seen a guy explain it. Like he took a card like this, put it in an envelope, close it up. He said, your life is hid with Christ. And they put in his Bible and closed it and said in God like that. Like that's how secure your life is. You are dead and your life is hid with Christ in God. When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall you also appear with him in glory. This is so heavy that it would need a whole like episode to break down, which we're not doing. We're buzzing through it to make a. To make a key point. Mortified, therefore your members which are upon the earth. What are those things within our body? Fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness. I think I butchered that word. I'm glad I didn't read that which is idolatry. I wish you woulda. For which things sake. The wrath of God comes on the children of disobedience, in the which you also walked sometime when you lived in them in the past. You don't do it anymore. But now you also put off all these anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth. Talking about the born again life now, right, Verse nine. Lie not one to another, seeing that you have put off the old man with his deeds and have put on the new man which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him. Where there is neither Greek nor Jewish circumcision, nor uncircumcision. Barbarian Scythian bond nor free, but Christ is all and in all put on therefore as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, long suffering, forbearing one another and forgiving one another. If any man have a quarrel against any, even as Christ forgave you, so also. Do you remember that was like that parable we read last week where it was like the master forgave the servant for so much and then the servant went and choked the other guy that owed him way less. He's saying, no, no, no, in the same way you were forgiven. Forgive others and above all these things put on love. Says charity in the King James. Put on love which is the bond of perfectness or maturity and let the peace of God rule in your hearts. That's what we're talking about, the peace of God. We went a long way to get to that. Let the peace of God rule in your hearts to the which also you are called in one body and be thankful. So According to verse 14, love binds us together and makes it possible for the peace of God to rule in our hearts. So in the same way we say like there's no, there's no peace without grace. There's no peace without love. And as long as we're talking about this whole context of the Sermon on the Mount that it's the culture of our kingdom. It's like every nation has a culture far lost.

Our. Our nation, our kingdom, has a culture too. That culture is love, right? So. So none of the other stuff happens without love. Let's look at Philippians 4, 6 and
Co-host
7 before you move on. I just think on, on verse, verse 3. Isn't it interesting where he's talking about that your life should be hid with Christ in God? Like where we were touching on the aspect of hiding, right? I don't know. There might be something there. It's just a kind of interesting observation,
Matt
what you want to say it.
Co-host
I don't know. I don't know. I just. I think there is something about when. When the Bible is describing to hide, you can hide many places. Apparently you can hide with God.
Matt
I think what you're saying is there's a big difference between hiding from God and hiding with God, right? It's worded there. You are dead and your life is hid with Christ in God.
Co-host
Hidden from what? Hidden from everything.
Matt
Yeah, there's just like. Yeah, there's just like all this whole world's going on and the Epstein and the Republicans, the Democrats and Elon did this and Bitcoin did that. Say, yo, I'm hidden with Christ in God, like, whatever, that's all cool. But like, I'm not influenced by those things. My job is to influence those in my little sphere. Not. Not on a national or worldwide scale. I don't think humans were ever designed to like, be involved in that many different situations all the time. Like how many people were stressed over Russia, Ukraine? If they lived 200 years ago, they would never even known Russia was at war with Ukraine, you know what I'm saying? It's just this thing where you can just like get so much going into you that you're allowing from the outside, where it's like, yeah, just be hidden with Christ in God, man. You know what I'm saying? And then live that life in the little sphere that you live in. All right, Philippians 4, 6 and 7 says this. Be careful for nothing. It's almost saying, like, live a little recklessly in God. I like that. Be careful for nothing. Let's be a little reckless in our relationship with God. But in like, don't be afraid, like, let it rip. Let it rip, man. You love the Lord, you know the Lord. Get out there and let it rip. Be careful for nothing. But in everything, by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your request be made known unto God. So primarily he's saying, come to him with whatever your needs are, whatever your Requests are, and don't, like, come to him. And you can. You can be bold before him. You can be strong and open before him. What will happen then? In the peace of God which passes all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. I just feel like that needs to be said because this is a lot of passages. This is a lot of talking, trying to explain what peace is. And Paul's saying, bro, it's kind of like past understanding, to be totally honest. We could try to use words. It's kind of like what I was saying when I was listening to the music at the church. And then just, like, being so moved. It's almost like you're confused. It's almost like it's. This piece is past all understanding. You're almost like, how did I get here? How did it get like this? Like. Like, how did it go from that to this? Like, what is this story? Like, how did the Lord just grab me like that? Like, how. Like, how did. How did any of this happen? It's a piece that's without understanding. Like, you're good. It's hard. Like, you can't really explain it. You could try to. The woman with the issue of blood. We talk about all these passages, but there's this thing, man. It's a piece that passes all understanding.
Co-host
You.
Matt
You may not ever be able to explain it to someone. So I just want to make that point, really, to say, like, we're doing all this stuff to explain a word that actually is beyond understanding. Isn't that a wild thing? That a wild statement?
Co-host
And maybe we should ask a monk about it.
Matt
Be careful for nothing but in everything, by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God which passes all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. Isn't that wild? Oh, no, that's just a wild passage to me. All right, so now we got to talk about what can stop peace. All right, let's look at Luke 12:49, 53. What can stop peace?
Co-host
I am come to send fire on the earth. And what will I, if it be already killed?
Matt
Whoa, whoa, whoa. Who's. Who's speaking?
Co-host
This is Jesus speaking.
Matt
This is Jesus speaking. What? Wait a minute. What'd he say?
Co-host
And what will I, if it be already kindled?
Matt
No, what's he say when he opens up? Like, what's that? First thing he says, I've.
Co-host
I have come to set send fire on the earth, Bro.
Matt
What?
Co-host
Yeah.
Matt
Okay. Okay, let's go.
Co-host
But I have A baptism to be baptized with. And how. And how am I straightened till it be accomplished?
Matt
Oh, let's unpack it. Suppose you that I'm come to give peace on earth. This is what I'm getting at. Remember, this is the prince of peace. This is the God of peace. Blessed are the peacemakers. This is the culture of our kingdom. How could he say this? Then how does this make any sense? Suppose you that I'm come to give peace on the earth. I tell you, no, but rather division. For from henceforth, there shall be five and one house divided, three against two and two against three in the same household. The father shall be divided against the son and the son against the father. The mother against the daughter and the daughter against the mother. The mother in law against her daughter in law, and the daughter in law against her mother in law.
Co-host
That's an interesting scripture right here. So the house divided three against two. That's. What do they say? Like a third? That's not a third, is it?
Matt
I'm not doing this with you right now.
Co-host
We're doing this. Doing this stuff, right?
Matt
But it's just saying that there's gonna. He's bringing division. He's bringing division and he's bringing fire. Right? And so he uses two different illustrations to say the same thing. If we look at Matthew 10:34, he's going to use another illustration to say the same thing.
Co-host
Think not that I am come to send peace on earth. I came not to send peace, but a sword.
Matt
Okay? So first time he says, I didn't come to bring peace, but fire, it's going to bring division. Now he's saying, I didn't come to bring peace, but a sword.
Co-host
For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law. So he's here to divide.
Matt
A man's foes shall be that of his own household. He's gonna unpack this a little more now, maybe. Maybe with some motive here.
Co-host
Are we talking about, like, who's. Let's continue.
Matt
He that loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me. So here's where this division is coming in. He's unpacking a little more here. And he that loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. I love this passage because me and Jess used to argue about it when I was very new to walking with God, and she was very new or trying to get there. And I remember her being like, no, I'm never Gonna love God more than I love my kids. I love my kids more than anything in the world. And then I don't remember exactly how it went down, but we argued about it. I probably said really mean things. But then I remember a day where she said, hey, like. Like out of the blue, hey, Remember when we argued about that? Like, I used to love the kids this much. Let me make sure it makes sense on the screen. I used to love the kids this much, and I loved God this much. But now I love God this much. I love him more than the kids. But now I'm able to love the kids this much. Does that make sense? I'm able to love the kids more. I love God more than I love my kids. But that level that I was able to love them at before has increased so much now that God is the priority of my life. Now that he's number one in my life. You see what I'm saying? She couldn't come to terms with, like, loving God more than her kids. And then one day it happened. Like, you know what I'm saying? Like, one day it happened. She didn't learn it in seminary school. It wasn't doctrine or theology she got taught in a class or at a Sunday morning. It happened in her life. And she said, okay, now I understand this. I could. I love the kids more than God once. I love God more than the kids now. I was able to love the kids so much. More than I ever could before. Not to take a sidebar. And he that takes not, she says, he that loves father and mother more than me is not worthy of me. And he that loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. And he that takes not his cross and follows after me is not worthy of me. He that finds his life shall lose it. And he that loses his life. Surprise for my sake shall find it. So ultimately, what I think all of this is, saying this is just one man's take on it, is that there's things that he's not compatible with. You have to make him. First, you can't love. The household is divided. Because some people love Christ more than anything else in the universe, and some people don't. And now the house is divided. And he uses two different explanations of, like how he's going to do this, right? Fire and a sword. So some things, probably some people know this experience. Some things he burns out of you. Other things he cuts out of you. And he cuts things out of you, but he cuts things away from you, too. Like, there's things he cuts out of you. But there's some of these relationships right here, like, is what he's talking about. He's talking about internals and externals because that's what he goes into in the Matthew thing is like, if you don't take your cross and follow me, you're not worthy of me. You have to lose your life for my sake to actually find it. There's internals, right? But there's externals too. There's family he's cutting away. There's relationships he's cutting away. There's people he's cutting away. This is how he does things, dude. Like, I remember a dude from the gym, this dude Vince, he was like a jacked guy too. And I used to talk to him about GHB and coke and storing oxycontins and like just partying and stuff. And then I got converted. And I don't know how much longer. I don't know how much longer because a lot of that happened quick. But it happened over a long period too. I just remember one time he texted me, he's like, yo, I got some H if you're interested. And I remember being like so offended when I read it. Like, what? What?

Matt
What's wrong with this guy, dude? Why would he think I want heroin?
Co-host
Whoa.
Matt
Like, why would this guy think that dude wouldn't Like, I'm a Christian and I just, I Just remember, like, how crazy that was. It took me a second. I was like, oh, yeah. Because like a month ago, you're in the gym talking to him about GHB and oxycontins. You see what I'm saying? Like, the Lord starts cutting away people from you, if that makes sense. Right? And, like, you have to allow him to do this. I'm not a big believer in, like, the thing that you're struggling with saying, I gotta stop. I gotta stop. I gotta stop. I'm a big believer on getting close to God and let him deal with it. He's gonna burn out of you these things that are incompatible with him to make peace. There's things that he won't make peace with in your life. He didn't come to make peace with those things that he's incompatible with. He came to burn those things up and cut those things out so that he can make peace with you. Do you see what I'm saying? And he won't make peace with those things he's incompatible with. There was a girl that worked here before, I remember, she said. She said, matt, like, a couple months ago, I started reading my Bible way more like just from working with you and talking to you and stuff. And you said something one day to another chick that came in that. I never heard anybody say it like that. And I was like, well, what was it? And she goes, this chick was talking about how, like, she really wanted to be a Christian, and she was raised as a Christian, and she was doing the best she could to be a good Christian, but she really loves smoking weed. And she goes, matt, I'll never forget what you said. I never heard it like that. I said, what did I say? She goes, you told her, smoke it up. You told her, smoke it up. You told her that her issue wasn't smoking weed. Her issue was proximity to God. And so whatever that thing is that you're doing, do it, but go hard with all your heart after God, let Him burn it out of you and let him cut it out of you. And I said, yeah, I think I remember that conversation. But even if I don't, that sounds like something I'd say because I know that experience, if that makes sense.
Co-host
Yeah, there's a. I think I want to say something about that scripture specifically, because that was like a. I think that's the impotence of my first falling away from the church when I was really young. I think bad preaching led people in my family to cut off themselves from other family, which in where I grew Up. Like, the houses were connected. So I lived in one house. And then, like, you know, like, townhouses.
Matt
Yeah.
Co-host
This way. And this way were my aunt and uncle.
Matt
Yeah.
Co-host
Not Christians. My family was Christian. And starting their walk and like, getting hardcore with it, you know? And then it turned into that where it's like, you know, we have to cut these things off, like, after, I guess.
Matt
I don't know.
Co-host
Like, Jehovah's Witness would do that. They'll preach, Ian, and they'll cut it off if. If it's not going around. But at the time, I was like, hey, that's still family. Like, I don't. I don't think we do that. And it was a big mistake. And for me, like, it was a reason I was given a choice, like, a few years later, like, do you want to still go to church or not? And I said, no, I don't want to go to church. And that's the reason, because for me, the family was the most important thing. I don't know if it was, like, above God, but.
Matt
Tough, dude. These are. These are.
Co-host
It's tough.
Matt
It's tough because there's also, like. Yeah, there's things he's got to cut away from you, but that doesn't mean all things. So it's just. Are you influencing the family, or is the family influencing you? I don't know what they were doing. I don't know if they were involved in anything crazy.
Co-host
No, nothing crazy. Just Spanish activities. Regular.
Matt
I mean, just dominoes and. Dominoes and stuff.
Co-host
Yeah, yeah, Things like that. But I think it was, like, a more legalistic approach where we have to,
Matt
like, separate ourselves, which American 501C3 system is kind of big on that.
Co-host
And.
Matt
And because there's, like. This is the problem. There's some biblical truth in that. Like, like, I had to be cut off from old friends, old acquaintances, old dudes texting me if I want to get age from them. You. I mean, there is an element of that. If there wasn't an element of that.
Co-host
No, it was just regular family stuff. Where. And. And I. I mean, you know, I've spoken about it with. With my family, and they were like, they say that that was a mistake. They also say they never have. But I'm kind of like, man, you know, like, I don't know. Like, we have to be real careful with that.
Matt
I think the big thing for. If people are going through that is maybe take a break, not cut them off, but maybe regroup. Right. Like, hey, this has always been my relationship to this person. There was girls here that used to smoke a lot of weed together. And then they stopped being friends because they knew that the other one was making them a weed smoker. They both totally separate, started reading their Bible and going to church. And then one of them was talking to me like, yo, how do you think I should handle this with her? I was like, well, I think it's different now. I think it's different. I think you guys have backed off that relationship, that friendship. You've both regrouped. You enter it different now. Like, it's like it's a different thing now. You know what I mean? So I think there's. That too, is like some things have to just be cut out, right? Some relationships, especially family, can't really be cut out. It doesn't. And that's just how the universe works. That's a tough one. Right? But you can step back and regroup and approach it different the next time.
Co-host
Yeah, I think that's. And that's what ultimately happened.
Matt
Okay, we're rolling. We're rolling now. We're talking about the children of God, right? Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the children of God. So let's look at this. Let's unpack Children of God. Really? I feel like these passages are just an excuse to cover tons of Bible passages, right? To just go on like a choose your own adventure style book and just check a ton of passages. Galatians 3, 24, 27. Let's look at that.
Co-host
Wherefore the law was our school master to bring us unto Christ that we might be justified by faith, but after that faith has come, we are no longer under a school master. Is he talking about the law?
Matt
Yeah, yeah. He says, but before faith came, we were kept under the law. So we were kept under the law before faith came. But before faith came, we were kept under the law. Shut up. Unto the faith. So it was almost like he says, it's like a school master, right? It's like tutoring us and keeping us on. Unto the faith. To bring us unto the faith which should afterwards be revealed. Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster. Why? To bring us unto Christ that we might be justified by faith. But after that faith has come, we are no longer under a school master. Why? The next word is four, which means because. Because you are all children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. That's what we're getting at. For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. Isn't that wild? That's what I'm saying. Like, just think about it before you get baptized. That's all I'm saying. Especially the young guys. Like, you don't want to get baptized. They're going to a popular church. That's really cool. The chicks will think it's cool if you get baptized. No problem. Just think about this before you do it, right? As many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. And some would say that's not water baptism, that's spirit baptism. No problem. No problem. I'm with that. That ultimately probably exactly what that's talking about. But I just wanted to put it in context of like, how are we the children of God? You are all the children of God by faith. Faith. So it's plain you're not the children of God by being a peacemaker, right? This is what we were talking about earlier. Like, we don't really interpret the scripture. There's an author. There's an author, right? So like, if you wrote a book and then I said, well, my interpretation of the book is blah, blah, blah, People would be like, well, why don't you go just talk to the author? Like, why don't you just ask Todd? Like, what do you mean? That's your interpretation? There's an author of the word of God, right? It's the Holy Spirit. So really the scripture interprets us. And. And this is what we're doing. We're the children of God by faith. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the children of God. That's like a mirror that we're just checking ourselves. Am I a peacemaker? Am I meek? Right? Do I mourn? Am I poor in spirit? Right? That's. We're using the word of God as a mirror to. To check ourselves. But we are the children of God by faith was the point that I'm getting at. All right, let's look at. These are the things we would expect in our life, right? As we live by faith. This is the culture of our kingdom. Let's look at 1 John 3, 10 and 11.
Co-host
In this, the children of God are manifest.
Matt
Manifest. That's what we're saying in this. They're manifest. It doesn't make them that they're manifest. This is another way of saying it.
Co-host
And the children of the devil, whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother. For this is the message that ye heard from the beginning that ye should love one another, right?
Matt
In this, the children of God are manifest. And the children of the devil. Whosoever does not righteousness is not of God. It's not saying that, like this makes you a child of God. This just manifests it. This just manifests it. This just makes it seeable. This makes it known. This makes it appear. This makes it known openly, right? That's the point we're making. Faith is what makes us children of God. But in this, the children of God are manifest. This is how they're shown, right? How is it? This is the difference between the children of God and the children of the devil. Whosoever does not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loves not his brother. Because ultimately all of the law, all of the entirety of the Bible, even ultimately, all of the details or the characteristics that are laid out about the character of those in our kingdom, about the culture in our kingdom, comes down to love. Love God with all your heart, mind, soul and strength, and love your neighbor as yourself. That's what John's unpacking here, right? He's saying the children. Whosoever does not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loves not his brother. For this is the message that you heard from the beginning, that we should love one another. All right, let's go to John. Not one John, but the gospel of John 13, 34 and 35. It says this. A new commandment I give unto you. I like this. I want to unpack this. It's a new commandment. A new commandment I give unto you. That you love one another as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this shall all men know that you are my disciples. If you have love one to another. That's heavy. Not if you have flawless doctrine. Not if, like you go every Sunday. But as you love one another, that's how people are going to know. By this shall all men know that you are my disciples. In other words, this is how it will be manifest. We'll keep our finger there and we'll go to. We'll go back to 1 John again. 1 John 2, 1 John 2, 3 through 11.
Co-host
And hereby we do know that. We do know that we know him.
Matt
Hold on, I got this. I got this. Hereby we do know that we know him if we keep his commandments, right? He's breaking down for us now the culture of the kingdom of God. Do we live according to how he's teaching us? He that saith, I know him and keeps not his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But whoso keeps his Word, who keeps it, who lives it, who lives what he's teaching. It'd be wise of us to go through the commandments of Jesus. Right. Especially in the Sermon on the Mount. That's really what we're doing. He makes interesting commandments. He says, lay not up treasure on earth, but do lay up treasure in heaven. Right. The Word of God is vast in all of its teachings to us and how to live those who live it. That's right. Those who memorize it and don't live it, that's wrong. He that says, I know him and keep not his commandments is a liar, you're saying, yeah, I'm a Christian. I mean, I don't really live how God commands me to live, but I know Him. Then the truth is not in him, but whoso keeps his word in him. Verily, is the love of God perfected. Hereby we know that we are in Him. He that says he abides in him ought himself also to walk even as he walked. And I would say, like, at the core of that statement is like, how did Jesus walk? It looks like at the core of his life was, I didn't do anything on my. Of myself. I only did what the Father showed me. I only did what the Father told me. Like, that's really. If you had to sum up his life in a sentence, it's really that. That he did what his Father wanted him to do. Right. And that's this living relationship. And I believe that's what's being alluded to. And it says, he that says he abides in him ought himself also to walk even as he walked, in total obedience to God. Brethren, I write no new commandment unto you, but an old commandment which you had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word which you have heard from the beginning. Again, a new commandment I write unto you. This is where it gets tricky. This is why I like this. He says, yeah, this is no new commandment. It's an old commandment. But then in verse eight, he says, but it's a new commandment. Yeah. Watch this. I write unto you which thing is true in him and in you. Because the darkness is passed and the true light now shines. He that saith he is in the light and hates his brother is in darkness even until now. He that loves his brother abides in the light, and there is no occasion of stumbling in him. But he that hates his brother is in darkness and walks in darkness and knows not where he goes, because that darkness has blinded his eyes. So there's this little trickery going on here. There's like it's a new commandment, but it's an old commandment. But it's an old commandment. But it's a new commandment. But it's not a new commandment. But it is a new commandment. You're saying like what's happening here?
Co-host
It's a reminder.
Matt
This is how I unpack it, man. If we go back to John.
Co-host
So all together, that's 12, huh?
Matt
What do you mean 12?
Co-host
12 commandments. If you take, you know, he just gave him two new ones.
Matt
Yeah. Love. Which is. Which is really one. Right? So I'm just going to read it again in John 13, just real quick. A new commandment I give unto you. That you love one another as I have loved you. Okay, hold on to that. Now we're in. Now we're in. John 15, 12 and 13. This is my commandment. That you love one another as I have loved you. So this is where we're going to unpack this. It's an old commandment. But it's a new commandment. But it's not a new commandment. But it's an old commandment. This is my take on this. If you have some different take, that's okay. That's okay. Because I'm not demanding that you see everything my way. Love has always been the commandment. This is. This is to unpack this mystery. If this is no new command,

The entirety of the law. And even before the law, right, the law had a beginning. The entirety of the Bible is love, right? Love God with all your heart, mind, soul, and strength, and love your neighbor as yourself. So this is not a new commandment. So. But why is it a new commandment? Because it is. But it isn't. Here he goes. This is my commandment that you love one another as I have loved you. Okay, can you unpack that a little bit for us? Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. Bro, this is something that, like, I don't know. I don't know that people are ready for. Like. Like, this is the most wild thing. This is the new command. It's not a new command, but this is the command. Be willing to die for others. You say, oh, no, no. That's not saying to die for others. It's saying to, like, lay down your life and live for others. That's probably harder than dying for someone. So. So I'll take it either way. Either way. Right. But the bottom line is your life is not your own. You belong to Christ. And now there's this new love that's willing to lay down itself for others. That's the new command. That's not really a new command, but it's kind of a new command, if that makes sense. You say, oh, no, no. This is madness, what you're saying. This isn't found anywhere else in the scriptures. Technically, it is, man. If we look at Ephesians 5, gonna get some people upset, but we're gonna read it anyway. Ephesians 5. Watch this, man.
Co-host
Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands.
Matt
Yeah, so that's usually where, like, the dude is. Like, I said I wanted my steak medium rare, and you burned it. You're getting the backhand. Go to the store and get me another steak. You got to keep reading. You got to keep reading. This is. This is crazy.
Co-host
Dude.
Matt
This is the wildest. I don't know that people are ready to, like, enter into this either. Like, this. This is wild. Wives, submit yourselves under your own husbands as unto the Lord. Why? Because the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church. And he is the savior of the body. Wow. Therefore, as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in everything. Okay, this is where it gets Sketchasaurus Rex, man. This is where people. They like that part. The dudes really like that part. This part gets a little rough. Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church and gave himself for it. That command of, like, wives submitting to the husband is only in context. If the dude is willing to die for his wife, that's. That's what we're talking about. That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the Word. That's heavy, too, to me. Not to go off on a tangent, but, like, it's the man's job to do the Bible study in the home, is what I'm. Is what I'm unpacking from that. You could say, oh, no, no, that's whatever. That's my take on it, right? Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church and gave himself for it, that he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the Word. That's what Jesus did for the church. And in a way, it applies to us. And I believe that's why men should be leading the Bible study in their home. You know, if your wife does it, that's great. I'm not knocking you. Bible study in the home is great. I think dudes have to step up and, like, take this place. Like, are you really willing to die for your wife? If you're not willing to, like, lead the Bible study in the home with, like, the wife and the kids? You don't have to be a genius. You don't have to know all the Greek and Hebrew. You just. You just do Bible study with your family, man. You get these stories in their spirit. Especially to little kids get these stories in their spirit, man.
Co-host
It's funny that you're talking about that. We're not even there. America's not even get to the, like, get the husband to do the Bible study. The husband has abdicated the duty and that's created. I don't know. You're not online, but there's like the manosphere where they're saying, you know, women are this. Women are bad because they do this, because they do that. It's an abdication, ultimately, of the duty of the man. And that's why the women have behaved
Matt
this way, because they had to fill a role that wasn't getting filled.
Co-host
So now they're in an unnatural state. And I mean, it's. It's untenable. It's out of hand at this point.
Matt
Bro, I always thought that. Yeah, sorry, I didn't mean to cut you off.
Co-host
That's fine. It's your show.
Matt
No, I'm the King of cutting off on podcasts. I don't mean to be like, it's just like, I think a thing and
Co-host
I'm like, yeah, go ahead, explain yourself.
Matt
Okay. No, I just always recognize, like, this was wild. That like on TV shows, the man was like, when I was a kid or whenever I used to watch tv, it was like this dude, Homer Simpson, right? It was like this dude Al Bundy. Or it was like this dude King and Queens. And the context was always, the man's a doofus. He's a dummy. He can't really do anything without the woman. And I always thought, like, that's weird, man. Like that wonder. I wonder what that. I just observed it even before I knew the Lord. But then the more I read the scripture, I was like, oh, if this. If Satan can get like, the man to just be a dumb, dumb. And he's not a king in his house. He's not a king and a priest in his house. And he's not guiding the family. And he's not like a strong man if he can like, dare I say, brainwash, right? Which is so much of what's all in media and social media, dude, it's just so much brainwash, man, just to make people's brains think a certain way. If I can make the dude a wanker, I don't have to attack the whole family. I'll just attack the head. If the husband is the head of the house, I'm not going to waste my time attacking the tail and the leg and arm. I'll just attack the head. And it's been like that for a long time, which I think is what you're saying. And so it just attacked the man. The man subconsciously begins to think like, yeah, just be a wanker. Because the wife does everything and now there's a vacuum and boom, she's got to fill it.
Co-host
That's a secondary, like, more recent attack. I think the older attack is. It's less sophisticated. I think it just has to do with adultery. So in. In Spanish household, specifically, like my grandfather, what they did and what they do, even to this day, if you're like old school Spanish household, they go out and they have like multiple families and. Yeah, yeah, that's just what they do. The Puerto Rican people, I mean, South American, like Spanish, Hispanic, Latin, that's what it is. So my ex, girlfriend, dad, the same thing.
Matt
Work.
Co-host
He would work, provide and be like that strong household. So, like, what Jesus is saying here, he's the head of the household, so he's embodying that, but he's also going out and he is doing wrong by his wife. And Jesus is not going to do that to his church. So, like, that part. And it's not just Hispanic people. It's. It's all. It's a lot of men that if they're not. If they're not being a cuckold to the wife, which is like inverting this role, this inversion, they're doing this thing where they're. They have their, you know, extramarital affairs. They have their other families, like entire. My grandfather had another family, an entire other family.
Matt
I got my hands full with one wife.
Co-host
Crazy.
Matt
Happy birthday, sweetheart. I love you.
Co-host
But ultimately, it's the man's job to not just fulfill the head. Happy birthday. She's the best. It's not. Not just to fulfill the role of the household, of the. Of the man in the household, but you also have to treat your wife like Jesus would treat his church.
Matt
Two things, bro. That's what this is saying that. I don't know. This is one of the most, like, profound things, dude, Christ is saying. The Bible's saying right here in Ephesians that every Christian marriage is a prophetic picture of Christ in his church. If we're going to state that bluntly, that's what's being said here. Every Christian marriage is a picture to the rest of the world. Who doesn't read a Bible of what the church is supposed to look like? That's staggering, bro. I don't care if you're the talking pastor, singing pastor, deliverance pastor, missions pastor, canned food drive pastor, doesn't matter. Are you married? Do you have a Christian marriage? Your marriage is a prophetic type to the planet of Christ and his church, is what that's saying. And that's staggering. That's staggering. Does my. Is my marriage a prophetic picture to the world of Christ in his church? Because that's what it's supposed to look like.
Co-host
Yeah.
Matt
Isn't that wild?
Co-host
I don't know if it's possible to do that, like, every single second. But are we. Are you trying. Are you trying every minute of the day to have that relationship with your wife and then with. Also with God?
Matt
I think it starts with being aware. Am I even aware that it's supposed to be that? I didn't know that. I never got told that at church. I never got told my marriage is supposed to be a picture of Christ in the church. I never heard such a thing.
Co-host
These scriptures are also dealing with this idea of, like, people want to kick against it. Right. Like. Like the modern female might want to kick against this, but the previous scriptures that we just. That we were just reading where he was. Jesus is talking about, you know, cutting off your father and loving him more. He's not. It's not like he's building a cult. He's just saying, de facto, this is how it has to go. This is how this place is built, and this is what you have to do if you want to be successful in it. Here's another method. You want to be successful in a marriage, in. With other people, in a society that's just a structure. Take it or leave it.
Matt
Yes.
Co-host
And when you leave it, you live in America.
Matt
You know what's funny, though, is, like, there. How many ladies do they interview later in life that were like, yeah, I was the girl boss and I got CEO vibes and, you know, I crushed the game. And then later in life, they're like, yeah, but really, I didn't know it, but what I really wanted was to be a wife and a mom, and now I can't have kids. That happens, bro.
Co-host
My favorite story. Have you ever heard this story? There's a woman, New York CEO woman, who works her way to the top. She ends up freezing her. Her eggs, and she's like, I'm gonna have kids later because I'm gonna do my thing. And later on, none of them are viable. And now she's 50 and. Or 45 at the time and just wrecked.
Matt
I don't know anybody like that, but my cousin has told me tons of stories like that. Yeah, that. Where it was people. He's like a professional, like, badass dude. And he's like, yeah, I know a ton of professionals that just. They came, they went to college. They were brilliant. They came out of college, they started crushing the game. They're making ton of money. They're moving up the ladder. They're putting off having kids, Putting off having kids, putting off having kids. Then when they finally decide to do it, they can't. Yeah, they can't. You know, and I don't know. I think it's just sad, and I think there's a manipulation.

You know, with the system in an attack against all of the society and I think that'd just be sad if you're like a lady and you get old and you're like, damn, I wanted to have like kids and I wanted to be a wife and really it didn't matter if I was a lawyer or a doctor, like I wanted to like do this whole household thing the way it's been set up by God. That would suck, man. That would suck. But the world lies to us and that's just the reality of it, man. We have to trust the word of God and trust his guidance.
Co-host
Yeah, man, it's, it's rough, especially modern day, but so many people fall into that, that trap and I don't know,
Matt
how do we get to Romans 8? Can we go to Romans 8?
Co-host
Yeah, we can.
Matt
Starting in verse one.
Co-host
Let's do it. Put you on here. There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Jesus Christ who walk not after the flesh, but after the spirit.
Matt
Them. Who are them? They.
Co-host
Them.
Matt
No, who are they?
Co-host
I don't know.
Matt
You want me to say it or you?
Co-host
Yeah.
Matt
To them which are in Christ Jesus who walk not after the flesh but after the spirit. To them there's no condemnation because the law of the spirit of life. Now we're introducing another word where the, another passage where the word law is used, not referring to. There's different laws throughout the scripture, right? This is, this is referred to as the law of the Spirit of life. For the law of the spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. So he's referencing two different laws. He's referencing two different laws in that verse, right?
Co-host
What laws? Explain this.
Matt
Well, the law of the spirit of life would be like, what we're in now. And some would argue that like the law of the spirit of life has just always been there. Right. Whereas maybe free from the law of sin and death, there was an, there was a element of, where the law given to Moses was just a guiding tool, but couldn't bring us life. Right. And I think wrapped up in the law of Moses was like red light stop sign laws, right? Like, like you're breaking a law, a police officer is going to enforce a law like that type of law. But then there's another type of law that we talk about, like the law of gravity or I don't know if everybody here believes in gravity. Careful. No, I don't know. I, I'm serious. I don't like, I never know what stuff sets me, I get it. But there's some kind of law of nature where if you go off a high building, you're going to go to the ground and die.
Co-host
If X, then yeah, like this is what I was just talking about before.
Matt
Natural laws, whatever you want to call it, the laws of reality, they're not red light stop sign laws. It's just the reality of it. Right?
Co-host
Right.
Matt
So like you didn't. If you jump off a building and die, you don't die because God's mad at you. You die because you broke the law of gravity. Right? And so a lot of this stuff that's wrapped up in the law of Moses. Like take like the law of the Sabbath. If you don't acknowledge the Sabbath, I don't think that you're like dying or being like destroyed internally because God's mad at you. It's just like the law of gravity, bro. If you don't take a day arrest, you're going to be fried. You're going to be fried. And in Christian living, that's why we would take a day of rest. Obviously, we know the New Testament says let no man judge you according to the Sabbath. So you got people that celebrated on Saturday, people that celebrate it on Sunday, people celebrate it Friday at evening. Like let no man judge you according to that. Some men don't celebrate it at all. They celebrate every day the same to us. We'd say, no, you can't do that. But I don't know, maybe if there's a dude who's retired and doesn't have a job, like every day, he's like, yo, every day's I'm going hard after God every day. I don't have any difference. He doesn't wait till Saturday or Friday evening or Sunday. So there's freedom in Christ. Like, there's like, let no man judge you according to the Sabbath. But there's some of these laws that are red light stop sign laws. And there's some of these laws that are just natural laws, like the law of gravity. Right. I don't want to get into too much of that because I didn't know until we started talking about this stuff that it sends people sideways. And I don't want to go sideways with all that.
Co-host
No, they get it. I think they understand what you're talking about.
Matt
I know, but I don't like causing division over this topic.
Co-host
Just make sure you say that the
Matt
earth is flat for what the law could not do and that it was weak through the flesh. So the law of Moses was not weak in itself. It was weak because of us. God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh. And for sin, condemned sin in the flesh, so that the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us who. Who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh, but they that are after the spirit. The things of the Spirit. Because to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Just keep that. Like, if you're just going to keep one verse today, keep that one for it. To be carnally minded is death. This is what all these things are talking about. Even in the Colossian letter when we're talking about. Set your affections on things above and not on things of the earth, is what this is saying. The things of the earth. To be minded of the things of the earth is death, is what is similar to what this is saying. Set your affections on things above. To be spiritually minded is life and peace. All through the scripture we're being told to transform our thinking now. Not of the things of the earth, not of the carnal things, not of the fleshly desires, but the eternal things, the spiritual things. For to be carnally minded is death. But to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Because the carnal mind is enmity against God. That's heavy. For it is not subject to the law of God. Neither indeed can be. So what if you take a carnal mind and send them to cemetery school and put them in the pulpit? You can end up with educated enemies of God in the pulpit. Because the carnal mind is enmity against God. For it's not subject to the law, to God, neither indeed can be so. Then they that are in the flesh cannot please God. But you're not in the flesh but in the spirit. If so, be that the Spirit of God dwells in you.
Co-host
We have to define spirit realm.
Matt
We're not doing that today. If the Spirit of God dwells in you, another staggering. We're not going to get into that. But it's staggering. Now, if any man have not the spirit of Christ, he is none of his. And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin, but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. But if the spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwells in you. Wait, what? Okay, hold on. So God comes down to the earth as a man, lets people spit in his face and rip his deer beard out, whip his back, make him die this bloody, torturous death on the cross. He goes in the ground and he's resurrected. If the spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwells in you. Wait. That same force, that same spirit that raised Christ from the dead can live in me. What do you mean? My life looks like everybody else's life. Like, what are we talking about? Like, what do you mean? I'm just like some dude, just like everybody else. But when the paper comes around and asked me which religion I am, I check the box that says Christianity. What are you saying? The spirit of him that raised Christ from the dead lives in me. What if the spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwells in you? He that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his spirit that dwells in you. I never, ever want to just read those passages and say, oh, yeah, I memorized it. I can say it like a parrot on the pirate's shoulder. And never, ever want to do that. I want to, I hope, the rest of my life. I'm always staggered by that passage, man. I never. I think that's the worst thing that happens is when a modern church or modern Christians just kind of act like what they believe isn't something crazy. This is. This is the wildest thing, man. The fact that this is reality is the wildest thing. Therefore, brethren, we are debtors. Not to the flesh, to live after the flesh, because if you live after the flesh, you shall die. But if you, through the Spirit, do mortify the deeds of the body, you shall live. Remember, that's what we're talking about. Through the spirit, mortify the deeds of the body. Let God burn those things out of you. Let God cut those things out of you. Live through the spirit. For as many as are led by the spirit of God, they are the sons of God. Okay, this is what we're getting to, right? I know it's like a lot of other stuff, but the context that we're still talking about right now is children of God, right? Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the children of God. So now we're getting to it. For as many as are led by the spirit of God, they are the sons of God. Not to go into, like, a Greek class right now, but this word children of God and everything we've read so far has been the Greek word huios. H U I O S Huios, right? This is. This is like an. A younger child or a less mature child. The children of God, right? Watch how this unpacks right here. For you have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you have received the spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, abba, Father, the spirit itself bears witness with our spirit that we are the children of God. So here we are back at this phrase, children of God. But now it's a new word in verse 16. It's the word technon of God, not whios. And there's great studies into this topic that I'm not prepared to do because that's not the concept right now. But I just want to kind of bring this to everybody's attention. We're huios. Then there's this adoption process, which I've heard good sermons on this. And again, I'm not a Greek scholar, but that the adoption process in this is not God driving by the orphanage and picking up an orphan and adopting them. That it's not that the context is adoption is this process where a young child comes to maturity. That's the difference between a whios and a technon son. And that's an interesting discussion, that it's like, you didn't get adopted. You didn't get picked up at the orphanage. You're born of God. You're his boy. You're made of what he's made of. He didn't. He didn't pick up an orphan at the orphanage. You are his son.
Co-host
Could this also mean, like, when you're older? Like, let's say I'm 18, right? And I want to have Matt, because Matt's much older than me, as my legal. My legal parent. This would be like a formal contract, and I would be able to then sign that to you. You know what I'm saying? Like, I'm old enough, rather than you are coming. You're like that kid, and then you adopt me. I am like, consenting that this is my legal father now.
Matt
It's an interesting take. Yeah, right. But it's more than that. It's more. It's like we are born of him. We are born of God. So. So we're not like something different that he picks up at the orphanage or even that we pick him. We're born of the spirit. We're born of him. We are actually of him, which is whatever. People disagree with that. That's fine. But I think that's the accurate take.
Co-host
What's there to disagree with?
Matt
I think some people are like, no, no, no, that's not, that's not what that's saying adoption means clearly that he picked you up at the orphanage, he adopted you, but you're not actually his son. Like, in that sense, you're an adopted son. Whereas I've heard it broken down in the Greek. It's been a long time since I heard a sermon on this. It just kind of came back to me while I was reading this. But that argument that, that phrase adoption just means that when you go from childhood whios to technon, that's the adoption process, it meant something different.
Co-host
That other argument didn't mean delineates between like gentile and Jew, which is another crazy thing. Like, I don't know. The more I really think about that, like, the Jews are God's people, but God created everything. So it's like, of course, everything.
Matt
Right? Everything's cool, man.
Co-host
I'm just saying because I'm.
Matt
No, no, I'm just saying, right? Everything's cool.
Co-host
We're good.
Matt
Okay. All right. For you have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you have received the spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, abba, Father, the spirit itself bears witness with our spirit that we are the children of God. We just know we're His. We. We know we belong to Him. Right. The Spirit itself bears witness with our spirit that we are the children of God. And if children, then heirs, what going to inherit a portion of his inheritance. If children, then heirs. Heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ. Like we're joint heirs with him. What Christ is going to inherit? I have a share in that. What if children, then heirs. Heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ. This is where we're going to wrap it up. If so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together. Right. So next week we're going to get into. Blessed are they which are persecuted for Righteousness sake. Right, that's what we're going to get into. Sorry it was only one verse this week, but we're probably go a little bit further next week. Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness sake. So just keep all this in mind as we close out. If children and heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ. If so, be that we suffer with him. Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness sake. Right. If so, be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together. For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. Amen.

Episode: Sermon on the Mount Episode 3 | Straight Bible
Host: TopLobsta (Matt) with Co-host Raven
Date: February 25, 2026
In this episode, TopLobsta and Raven continue their deep dive into the Sermon on the Mount, focusing particularly on Matthew 5:9 — "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the children of God." The conversation takes listeners through biblical definitions of peace and peacemaking, the spiritual dynamics behind these concepts, and how they manifest in the lives of believers. Through scripture-heavy analysis and candid, personal anecdotes, the hosts explore how grace, peace, love, and true Christian identity are intertwined, and why being a peacemaker is a reflection—not a prerequisite—of being a child of God.
"The scripture is interpreting us more than we're interpreting the scripture."
— Matt (02:25)
"Peace is this powerful force that we just kind of flippantly use, like love, faith, grace. But this is a powerful word."
— Matt (14:44)
"Don’t let people own you... I already belong to Christ, who's going to own me?"
— Matt (21:12)
"There is no peace without grace... and, as we unpack it in the greetings, it's always grace and peace."
— Matt (25:19)
"Your life is not your own. You belong to Christ. Now there's this new love that's willing to lay down itself for others."
— Matt (81:09)
"Every Christian marriage is a prophetic picture to the rest of the world who doesn't read a Bible of what the church is supposed to look like. That's staggering."
— Matt (88:25)
"The entirety of the law and even before the law... the entirety of the Bible is love."
— Matt (81:09)
