a lot and you know, not to pet myself on the back, but I had a very shut in winter.

Didn't, didn't go anywhere. Was very, very. It was like shut in and like I live in the woods.

Right. Like, when you. That's my only issue with, like, I love the idea of living somewhere warm like Florida, but then there's a part of me that's like, do you need the bad to make the good feel good?

Or is that something people in an abusive relationship tell themselves?

Maybe.

I don't know.

Well, I, I, maybe I, I had a whole childhood until I had 40 years of it, of seasons. I'm okay.

You're okay. Right. I feel like done your time.

It's kind of the same way. I had to think of, like, comedy. Like, I, I've, I, I New Yorked it. I learned how to be a comedian.

Yeah.

Okay. Can I take this and transfer it to a place where I can be. Live a lifestyle that makes me more happy, you know, do I deserve.

You've gotten your fingers, you've gotten your hands dirty.

Right. I, and I have the, the, the toolkit, so to speak, I hope. But I can lose it. I mean, it's only been a year and I still was like, like, I, I could hear myself saying annoying thing. Oh, it's still cold up there.

Yeah. Wait till you've been there.

Like a jacket today.

Wait till you've been there 20, 20 years and you're, you know, driving your, your girlfriend to her colonoscopy.

So, no, I mean, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's. Your rich friend is going to Europe season.

[Jordana Abraham]

Yeah.

Right now we are getting into rich friend in Europe season. Rich friend with a hotel that you go look up and see how much it costs a night. They're that rich.

[Jordana Abraham]

Yeah.

That's the season.

[Jordana Abraham]

That's that season. Yeah. This isn't gonna be my season, I think for this isn't gonna be like, my best summer ever in terms of, like, crazy wild plans. Like, a lot of. Again, I said this in the last episode. A lot of my days Are around like sameness.

[Jared Freed]

Right. Well also do you think, do you do. When you have kids do you have a moment where you're like I guess we have like a, at a minimum decade long break from going to Europe. Do you ever think like that?

[Jordana Abraham]

No, I will, I'll be going to Europe before then. But no, but I do think I

[Jared Freed]

have like kids are going to boarding school. Thank you very much.

[Jordana Abraham]

I think I have like at least a two year break of like just not really doing the things again. The, I guess the thing with kids is like the younger they are, the

[Jordana Abraham]

intensely you need to like be on top. Like the more they need from you. And even there's even a difference between like four months and like two years or four months and like four months and four years old is like a totally different thing. Like a four year old. Also a four year old. More people will like watch for you. A four month old. Like for me to have someone watch them I would need to teach them like the entire, a four year old crazy routine.

[Jared Freed]

A high school kid.

[Jordana Abraham]

Yes.

[Jared Freed]

A four month old. You need a nurse.

[Jordana Abraham]

Yeah, I need someone who's like a real professional. Like they need a lot, they need more constant intensive like care.

[Jared Freed]

Have you thought about what it would be like to be single with a one year old?

[Jordana Abraham]

Not yet because I don't have a one year old. But I have thought about what it would like to be a single mother with like two babies at like now and it's made me appreciate single mothers. Like I don't know how any, I don't know how anyone would do it. It's crazy.

[Jared Freed]

Like it's an impossible gig.

[Jordana Abraham]

Yeah. It just seems like I don't know how, I just like don't know how logistically you would do it. I guess if you had help like from your own, from like family or paid or some like you would need to have help. It would just be too.

[Jared Freed]

So that's just, it's just like the

[Jordana Abraham]

whole, the whole day and the whole

[Jared Freed]

night and you're doing it on your own.

[Jordana Abraham]

Yeah.

[Jared Freed]

You know there's a, a loneliness factor.

[Jordana Abraham]

Definitely have a new appreciation for that. It's, it must be very, very hard.

[Jared Freed]

Yeah. I mean I, I, I, you almost think that they should get some sort of like medal of honor or stipend. Yeah.

[Jordana Abraham]

Money.

[Jared Freed]

I get some metal, they're like yeah, thanks for my medal.

[Jordana Abraham]

Yeah. Probably just like money to hire like a, to help or like I mean a lot of people, their, their family,

[Jared Freed]

I, I don't really have to come in and go down on them just for 15 minutes.

[Jordana Abraham]

I mean, I don't really have. There's a lot of people have like their, their like parents come, like their mom come. They're, they're to like help them take care of their kids in a lot of cultures too, I think. I don't really have that, but I, you know, I'm fortunate to be able to like pay people to help me, which is.

[Jared Freed]

Well, you have Mike's side of the family. Do they?

[Jordana Abraham]

They do. But even them, they're like, I wouldn't leave two, I wouldn't leave like two four month old babies with like anyone who's like, wasn't a professional. I just don't feel like, I just don't. I wouldn't feel comfortable at this stage. Even like in six months. I think I'd feel differently.

[Jared Freed]

Totally.

[Jordana Abraham]

They just need like so much and there's two of them and it's like quite overwhelming.

[Jared Freed]

Only you could take care of them.

[Jordana Abraham]

Maybe that's my own narcissistic feeling, but it's like there's so many like, nuances of like this one likes this to be fed this way or she's not going to eat or like this one,

[Jared Freed]

you know, and, and you're trying to get ahead for when you get home. If that one doesn't eat with whoever you hired, you have to deal with the consequences of that.

[Jordana Abraham]

Yeah, it's kind of like, it's like with. It's kind of like a job that you could have attempt for and a job that you couldn't have attempt for. Like a job if, if you were gone, if you wouldn't be able to like, it's like you could take vacation and have someone else cover for you.

[Jared Freed]

Right? No, you know what I mean, I, I get it. Someone could.

[Jordana Abraham]

I guess I did. I was on maternity leave.

[Jared Freed]

But.

[Jordana Abraham]

But it's not the same.

[Jared Freed]

Right? It's not the same. People know, they listen to this. Yeah. I mean, I am so curious of the parent thing. I mean, just because I think that's, that's the fun of it.

[Jordana Abraham]

Yes. No, it's amazing. It's like. And I, I actually like love it. But at the same time it is like quite all consuming very, very few things where like you have to do them just 24 7.

And he tells you that story. I have four kids, all with a surrogate. I'm a single dad. No Mom. What's your association for a man that does that?

I would say he really wanted kids and maybe really didn't want us to have to deal with a woman.

Hates women, loves kids. Is that kind of the association?

[Jordana Abraham]

I guess that would be like.

It is funny when we think of men in these positions, that.

It's very rare position.

It's a very rare. But you would. You would associate that with a mental problem, right?

Well, I mean, like, it's almost like

I just got so offended for this guy's dad, for this woman's dad. But I'm just saying, like, when you hear a man doing this, when you hear a woman who's like, I got a surrogate and I just want to have. Right.

[Jordana Abraham]

You know, I use a sperm donor.

[Jared Freed]

Right. I use a sperm donor. I just want to have a kid. You go, good for her. That's got to be tough. And a different decision, a different way to go about life. But you kind of understand it. You're like, mom wanted to Mom. When you hear about a dad doing it, you go, what's the deal with that guy? Yeah.

[Jordana Abraham]

It feels a little weird, I think, especially because he has raised a gold medal figure skater. I'm like, right. Are you. Is this like a business decision? Like, were you looking for, like, the. I could almost.

[Jared Freed]

Because she did say she stopped because of the pressure of skating.

[Jordana Abraham]

Yeah. Well, I'm saying because she's so successful, it almost makes me think, like, he was like, I can't find a woman who's as good as figure skating as I would like my child to be. Maybe I need to go out and find a power athlete and I can just buy the eggs and make one

[Jared Freed]

myself of a ice skater.

[Jordana Abraham]

I mean, it's just like, it seems like crazy that she happens to be an Olympic figure skater. And he, you know, genetically used an egg.

[Jared Freed]

Right.

[Jordana Abraham]

And a surrogate.

[Jared Freed]

Is he. But I don't know him. I mean, maybe that's not asexual. Maybe that was how he felt. And he was like, you know, you meet people. It's funny to see the kids thing happen for people. Or think about an idea. Like, if you take your brain away from everyone has to have kids, then you start thinking of people who had kids. You're like, you shouldn't have done that. Right, Right. And then you think of people without kids, but you're like, you'd be a great. You know, like, not everyone who had kids should have had kids.

[Jordana Abraham]

Right.

[Jared Freed]

Well, not everyone who wants kids should. Is. Should be having them. Not everyone who doesn't have kids should be without kids. Like, maybe some people are really good for that job. Like, he was like, I'm good for that job, but it's not the way I get there.

[Jordana Abraham]

Yeah, think about that for any job you could. Just because you're good at something doesn't mean you like it enough to be your job.

[Jared Freed]

Right. That's interesting. Yeah. Well, I would love to have him on the podcast.

Yes. So here's when I've been reading the article. Basically, she talks about how I think Kristen asked her about, like, her a bad first date. She went on.

Or here's the quote. Do you have a bad celebrity date story that we don't know about?

And which is like, that's what you do to get you behind the curtains on a podcast. You get done taping and then you go, okay, let's set up a clip. Yes, that's what it sounds like was done.

Whatever. It works.

So she asks Chelsea this story, and Chelsea says that she talks about. She names names, which is very Chelsea. Right. She met Bobby Flay, met through. They met their mutual friends and flirted over the phone before meeting in person

for, quote, a little bit.

Yes. Then Chelsea goes to a hotel with three of her girlfriends, and Bobby says, I know this hotel. Let me. I'm going to order. I would love to. Like, I know the restaurant well. So he orders room service for everyone to her room at this hotel where she's staying with three friends. After the food arrived, the bill was sent to Chelsea and he didn't pay for it. So basically he ordered the food to the room but didn't pay for it. And then Chelsea go. Chelsea was surprised because she assumed he was treating her.

And.

[Jordana Abraham]

And basically she. Chelsea was like, turned off by this. Said he was cheap, said she's heard from other people that he's cheap. And she finds cheapness to be a major turnoff. So my question is for you. They. They still went on a date afterwards. That's kind of important.

Right.

[Jordana Abraham]

And Chelsea said it was not a match, but describes the experience as messy. So to me, there's. It's a two parter. The. To me, the two parters first icky or picky. He says you're, you know, you're early stages kind of going on a date. You haven't even gone on a date yet. He says, oh, I love that restaurant. Sends food to your room, doesn't pay for it. Icky or picky. And then secondly, he reveals public. She reveals. Is it. Is it petty or prudent of her to reveal his name publicly and say that he's cheap?

Let's start with icky or picky. I think there are some specifics that you're leaving out.

That are very important to the. Icky or picky?

Let's hear it.

I do think he is a celebrity chef. And saying, I know that menu at that. At that hotel, let me order for you. Is hot. And he knows what he's doing. Like, if a celebrity chef said, jared, let me order for you.

This is his thing.

Yes. The mic is yours, sir. Take me. Show me your. Yes, show me your binge at a hotel. Bobby Flay.

[Jordana Abraham]

Up for that?

Sure. Flirty. I have nothing wrong. I think nothing wrong with that gesture.

Would I expect them after they say they want to order for me at the hotel, that they're not. Their room service not there to pay for it? That would be, like, above and beyond. I don't think. I wouldn't. I think expecting for them to pay for it. And here's the point that I, again, if it was a random dude who ordered for you, the room service of the hotel didn't pay, I would actually think it's a little. I'd be like, okay, fine, it's icky. Okay, here's the part of this story that you're skipping over. She writes, or she said, I was at a hotel with some girlfriends. I think we were filming for Netflix. Bobby Flay's in Hollywood. Chelsea Handler's in Hollywood. I would think Bobby made the mistake of assuming that this whole thing, the whole hotel, was going to be taken care of by production. Yeah.

You don't pay with girlfriends, though.

I'm just saying, if you're filming something for Netflix and then you're like, hey, me and my girls get to stay at the Beverly Hills Hotel.

I would assume that's being paid for by Netflix. The idea of, like, she's going to be getting the bill at the end, I. It wouldn't run through my mind. Maybe I. That's the. Where I go, maybe Bobby Flay. But then when other people, when you get the reputation that you're cheap, everything gets viewed under that.

Yes.

So Bobby Flay's screwed in this scenario.

Yeah.

Because all she had to say afterwards was, oh, and I heard he's cheap. And now we all go, oh, checks out.

I do think, though, he is Bobby Flay. I assume he's a multimillionaire, right? Right. I do think it's a little weird to, like, think send something to someone's room when they didn't ask for it and then have someone else pay for it, even if it is Netflix production. Like, if I sent a bottle of champagne to your hotel room.

[Jared Freed]

Right.

[Jordana Abraham]

I'm just sending a bottle that I like. That you pay for.

[Jared Freed]

I would kind of pay for it, but I. I.

Especially when you haven't even slept with someone yet.

I don't trust the. I don't trust the. The storyteller. You know, I think. I think. No, I believe her, but I think she's leaving out important things. I'm there with my friends. I'm sexting with Bobby Flair. I'm texting with Bobby Flay in a flirty way.

Oh, you're there with friends. Check out this. Oh, yeah. Like, I don't think it. This isn't. To me to, to compare it to the. To the surprise bottle of wine is not a comparable thing.

Because the surprise bottle of champagne, you show up to the room, oh, my God. What's this card from Bobby. And then beneath the card, here's a bill for $500.

Is that. That's kind of what I'm crazy. I mean, that's sort of what I'm picturing. Like.

[Jared Freed]

Like, I'm picturing, hey, I'm doing a slumber party with my friends. We're about to order food. Oh, my God. Let me know that menu. In that scenario, it's not that icky. He's not that cheap.

[Jordana Abraham]

I think if you call in an order, it's not like he was like, you should get this. This. Here's what I recommend. This, this, and this. And then she ordered. If she orders it herself, I think he doesn't need to pay if he's ordering the food to. He's calling the hotel or probably having his assistant call the hotel and put in this order to be sent to Chelsea Handler's room.

And you're not like, here's my credit card. I think that's a weird movie move, especially if you are Bobby Flay.

Well, it's not about the money. Assumed that the kitchen would take care of it for him because he's Bobby Flay and he knew the chef that. At the kitchen at the hotel. And something got lost in translation me.

[Jordana Abraham]

That's the only possible explanation. And. Or the explanation that Bobby Flay is so rich. Sometimes the richer you are, the less you're even thinking about who's paying for what. You just kind of Assume it's getting taken care of and you're doing it

for Chelsea Handler, who you're like, we're all rich.

[Jordana Abraham]

Right? Like, who even exist? No one's even. Look, no one even thinking about where the bill is coming from. So I do think that maybe is the only explanation of like, oh, I know the guy at the restaurant. He's probably not even, he's not even going to charge me for this.

Right.

Cuz I'm Bobby Flay. I'm calling. Send them. I'm going to send them the, the food.

I think we're not getting enough of the story.

Bobby Flay has a leg to stand on, especially because I don't trust the, the, the, the author.

Chelsea does things like this. I just saw her do a quote about the roast where she was like, the roast. Which I have my own opinions about it. I didn't.

I think a roast. Love to be a roast. I think people have to like each other and have a relationship to make a good roast.

But that's also not the most.

The Tom Brady one was better. But I, I just think when, when you don't. When you're just hired as a sniper, you come into snipe.

You're not like Big J Okerson. I would encourage everyone to go watch Big J Okerson set which did they have a 20 year friendship and Kevin Hart gave him money when his house got taken away in Sandy. Like, they have like a whole story there, but it's the one that made the least news because it was the least problematic. But then, but, but it was love. That's what a roast is like. I think we're trying to force stand up comedy on people who don't like stand up comedy. Like, like, I, I think we're trying to make it mainstream and the way to make it mainstream is to make it extreme.

Right.

And now you have these people who are like, I'm just gonna say racist. And that serves their audience and they're just trying to find more people who want to be watching a guy who says racist.

Yeah.

So. And I think everyone got caught up in it because when Chelsea, her quotes were as annoying as some of the other quotes. Chelsea was like, look at a white man. You know, like, she always says the things to like that have nothing to do with the.

I mean, that's her thing.

Right. I'm saying she's as much of a carnival barker as the next person.

[Jordana Abraham]

You don't believe her.

[Jared Freed]

So I don't believe how she's telling the story. I think she told the story to make herself sound as good as, like when you leave out, I mean, we're talking about men. The thing with conversation we just had of like, maybe he called the chef. That is a way more like empathetic and thoughtful conversation.

Right. I mean, I also do, but believe he's probably cheap because I think that someone who. I think there is. There is a difference between a kind of person who would like make sure that of course they were going to pay for this.

[Jared Freed]

Right. Fair.

[Jordana Abraham]

Even. Even if they kind of like, here's the thing. Like, I could see a world in which the hotel would just comp it because Bobby Flay is calling and asking for it. But the fact that he wouldn't make sure that that was the case for to not get himself into a situation where he's ordering food to someone's room that they're paying for.

Right. That is that I'm following you on. If he let this happen, he let it happen. If he let it happen, that means he doesn't care about money, which means he is annoying, which means he is an ick.

Okay. Based on that, I think it's icky if I was dating a guy, even a regular guy who did this. I think it's. I think it's worse for a regular guy.

Also. There's nothing. No, there's nothing worse than trying to do like a stud move and then not paying for the stud move.

Yeah. So back it's like even with not doing any moves.

There used to be, I don't know if Still, Bobby Flay had like a steakhouse, okay, in the hotel. I think it was in the Borgata. And I was like, I had like money that I could spend, you know, at the Borgata. And I was like, I'll go to the steakhouse. So, you know, if they give you 100 bucks, I'll spend 200, you know, and I'll have a really crazy meal. So I sat at the bar and I'm sitting there and this woman wouldn't shut up. She kept talking to everyone and she was like 80 years old. She's like talking to you, talking to me, talking. And finally she goes, I'm Bobby Flay's mother. Oh. And I go, wait a minute. We're at Bobby Flay's restaurant. You're his mother.

Does she for free?

That's how you would know if he's actually cheap. If his mom gets a bill at his restaurant.

Well, you got to tip the staff if you go. If you get a free meal, that's how you'd really know if he's from cheap. If she just left no tip to the staff, it's Bobby's.

I recently listened to a 2024 episode and was struck by how much more centered Jared seems. And of course I'm thrilled for Jordana and Mike and the Twisters. We quote you both all the time at the end of our daily calls. We often say, well, we did it. We solved X. Let's love that. Filling in the blank with whatever problem we spent the morning discussing. Okay, enough of that. Yeah, keep going. Let's get into it. As listeners often say. After many years, my daughter has finally found a fantastic boyfriend, and for the first time I've thought this could be the one she tends to move quickly, but he seems all in too. They're nearly inseparable. He's introduced her to her friends and he's made an effort to meet hers as well. She recently invited him to Sunday dinner with our family, but he declined, saying that it's still too soon and he's not ready for that step yet. Oof. Oh, context clues. She's 31, he's 37 and was married until less than a year ago. He does not have a good relationship with his parents and suggested that whereas my daughter is excited for him to meet her parents, he hopes he never has to introduce her.

He has a good relate. She hasn't been listening long enough to this show. He has a good relationship with his siblings, though my daughter has emotional intelligence and from what she has shared, he is also very self aware and is a good communicator as well. No kids. They've been dating about a month, which doesn't sound long, but he started referring to her as his girlfriend only after. After only a week and both truly are head over heels. Her father and I moved very quickly in our relationship with her dad buying the engagement ring after dating for only three months. We were engaged at just six months and now we've been married nearly 35 years. They're in a permanent relationship. When you know, you know, right? Can you help me understand different reasons a guy would want to wait to meet the folks? We have had boyfriends she has dated in the past, come over for dinner. We are casual people and never has a boyfriend commented to her that meeting us was scary. It's fine if we wait. I mean yeah, we can at least wait until they have been dating 2 months. Lol. I just wanted your opinion on the various reasons a guy wouldn't want to meet the parents. And how long would you say feels like more normal if there is such a thing? Is this a red flag? I like to think that there is a reasonable explanation but I cannot figure out what those reasons might be. But I bet you will have some fabulous insights. Thanks for your feedback. I love this email. Not because, not just because she was so complimentary in the front. Yeah, that helps. Yeah. Yeah, that definitely helps. I, I, I think it's so interesting the way she, and again like the way people write the emails always informs me. Yeah, and I'm sure it informs you, of course, but it's just so important. Like you wrote these words, you cared about these words. I have a number of things. Like I don't think it's so crazy. Like I think everything she's saying, I think the biggest problem this emailer has, the mother of the daughter, is she keeps using her own emotions, her own relationship to inform how he should be acting in this relationship.

And that's where advice givers, that's where generally a lot of like you know, judgmental women enter into the dating conversation.

I mean we only have our own experiences, right?

Totally. But even what she wrote as a joke and it's not a joke she writes or she wrote to be fun. Her father and I move very quickly. I don't give a how your father and you move together. You know, like you've been married 35 years. Like I, I don't mean to be different extreme but like I'm using I don't give a as like a. I hope that jolts you right, because the minute you start going to my father father and I, you have drifted off into crazy town. USA Gas is $5 a gallon. Like I like, like don't come at me with your fa My father, Your father and I, we move quickly. Yes. Just because it did doesn't mean it will. But I'm saying, like, people can move quickly, but you're taking just my father and I to me is just such a. Like for that to even be referenced in this email.

This woman is this woman, the mother who I, I really like her. I, I'm happy she likes the podcast. Who after a month is calling your daughter his girlfriend.

Right. And the reason he would both are head over heels.

Right. You haven't met him. Speak for your daughter maybe.

We haven't. We don't know him yet. And, and then she goes, she says we're chill. Like that. That again, is another thing that you have totally missed. You're missing the whole.

Yeah. You could be the chillest. You could be sitting there on your front porch smoking a blunt and being like, get in here and eat me out. That's how we do it in this house. And I still. None of that would matter.

Like, the only thing that matters to me in this email is he was married and now the marriage is over. And now your daughter is the first girl he's dating after the marriage. And he probably dates the way people who get out of serious relationships date, which is they treat the person like a girlfriend or a boyfriend very quickly.

Yes.

[Jared Freed]

Because that's how they know how to show love. They don't know how to show it in the dating way. And again, these are. It's a pendulum swing. Like you can do it too much. You can not. You can hold back too much as a dater.

Right.

But this seems like he's diving in, but then realizing when he's get told, hey, so now that you call me your girlfriend come back. Right?

Yeah.

And then he's going, oh, shoot.

Right. He doesn't. His order of operations is not the same as yours.

No, Clearly. No.

And it means let. When you call someone your girlfriend after a week, it doesn't quite mean as much as if you call your someone your girlfriend after three months.

Right. That's the only way he knows how to. At the most unempathetic, like, like at the. At the extreme, again, I don't know if this is the case, but at the extreme, this is how he knows how to casually date.

Which is to get really deep and do relationship things really quickly. Or he really does like her and he knows that meeting the parents is like, okay, that's an actual step for him, you know?

But there is something wrong with calling someone your girlfriend and then saying it's too soon to meet their parents.

Right. And then your parents getting offended because, well, we were together after 15 minutes. Why wouldn't he want to meet us? We're totally cool.

I think I would be offended. Not because of, oh, I'm so cool. It'd be more like, what I think I'd be more offended of, like, why, why are you telling my, my daughter that you're head over heels with her, but that then it's too soon to meet her family?

Well, or why are you using a word but not using the action?

Well, if she wants to, like, not be accusatory, she can go to her own daughter and say, well, what is this relationship to you?

Like, I don't, I don't think this guy is not the mom's problem. The daughter is the mom's problem. Hey, you say you're in a relationship and he doesn't want to come over here. It's too soon. Right. But she may not. The daughter might not have thought about it, you know, And I think a lot of people say they want a relationship, but then don't think of what their definition is.

I guess a relationship does mean that you're gonna hang out with my family for him. He doesn't talk to his parents. So if, if you asked him his definition of family, of a relationship, he would go, well, relationship means we say we're in a relationship and that's it. You don't have to meet anyone. You don't have to do anything. You don't know.
