Earlier this summer, Hosts Michael Horton and Justin Holcomb spent two weeks in Egypt and Kenya with Theo Global, another project of Sola Media. This trip was part of Theo Global's annual efforts to gather leading theologians and biblical scholars from across the Middle East and then from East Africa to do theology together—so that the theological roots of the global church can grow strong. The first episode of this series was recorded onsite in Kenya, where Mike and Justin sat down with Adam Smith, a PCA minister and the Chief Operating Officer at Sola Media who has led the Theo Global project since it began in 2015. This is Theology by and for the Global Church. In this episode from 1996, classic hosts, Michael Horton, Kim Riddlebarger, and Rod Rosenbladt discuss the topic of “pragmatism” in the church. The ultimate question of pragmatism is not, “Is this true, good, or beautiful?,” but rather, “Will it work?” On this program, the hosts trace this pragmatic spirit throughout the history of American Christianity. While pragmatism may look different today, we encourage you to use this conversation to help identify what pragmatism is, what it looked like in history, and how you can identify it in its different shapes and forms today. We are going back to May 1, 1994, where the classic White Horse Inn hosts discussed the ecumenical statement, Evenagelicals and Catholics together. In this episode the hosts are joined by Patrick Madrid, a Roman Catholic author and apologist. Now that Evangelicals and Catholics Together is 30 years old, we hope that this conversation serves as a helpful look into the history and reception of this document. In this episode, Michael Horton, Walter Strickland, Justin Holcomb, and Bob Hiller consider how Christians are refined in the crucible of God’s sanctification—shaped through trials, strengthened in their daily struggles with sin, and fully made perfect by God’s grace when faith becomes as sight. How do we receive and rest in God’s righteousness? This question propelled the Reformers forward, confronting Rome’s insistence that justification is something believers must cooperate to receive. Instead, they proclaimed sola fide, or “through faith alone.” In this episode of White Horse Inn, hosts Michael Horton, Justin Holcomb, Bob Hiller, and Walter Strickland discuss the doctrine of justification by faith alone and consider the role of good works in the Christian’s life.
If our culture is like water, then the concept of grace is its oil. We like to work hard and believe our efforts should merit reward. Until, of course, we come face-to-face with our inability to truly “help ourselves.” In this episode of White Horse Inn, hosts Michael Horton, Justin Holcomb, Bob Hiller, and Walter Strickland break down the history of sola gratia, or “by grace alone,” confronting the continued influence of Pelagianism today and how grace sets us free.
With Sola Scriptura, or “through Scripture alone,” the Reformers affirmed the authority of Scripture over and above the tradition of the Roman Catholic church. Today, questions of authority and accountability still plague the church, stemming from the influence of radical Anabaptists, modern biblicists, the continued tradition of Rome, and our own culturally shaped desires to have the final say. In this episode of White Horse Inn, hosts Michael Horton, Justin Holcomb, Bob Hiller, and Walter Strickland discuss sola Scriptura and how it can be good news for the church today.
